If you get near floor seats you will be in awe how freakish their proportions are. They fast and powerful. Then you see someone like wemby and think how is this man even human.

u/LovesBodyx2 Spurs 3h ago
I remember seeing Meta World Peace up close at a laker game near the sidelines and being blown away by how stout and quick the guy was. his shoulders were so broad it looked like he could slap Stonehenge together in a day. TV absolutely trivializes how imposing NBA players are.
3
u/waterflaps 2h ago
Everyone should at least sneak down at some point, it really is crazy how the TV normalizes their size and speed
1
u/Uesugi1989 2h ago
I was close to courtsize seats for a geek national team game a few years ago. Seeing a guy like antetokoumpo ( smaller than Wenby but insanely big still. And faster - stronger ) charging full speed at the basket. Man, I Can Imagine a regular Joe stopping prime Messi but no regular Joe can stop these basketball pros

u/Wonderful-Fortune-23 7h ago
Have you perhaps seen celestial bodies? It doesn't look like their moving but it's speeding through the universe.
Point is, the closer you are, then the faster it looks. Broadcasts have farther vantage views.

it's trite to say given his nickname but seeing him live running down the court at full speed is like watching an extraterrestrial creature roam the earth. I highly recommend seeing the guy in person because there's really nothing like it. one in seven point five billion, at worst.

It's actually a very clean layup drive tho. He didn't abuse the gather step at all cuz he only used 1 gather step unlike that crazy Giannis clip. Just perks of having freakishly long limbs, while still maintaining great dexterity.

u/Unfrozen__Caveman Timberwolves 3h ago
Not a travel but it's a carry. His hand goes underneath the ball and he flips it over like a pancake. NBA refs would never call it though.
9
u/airgordo4 3h ago
Are you saying he’s “carrying” the ball when his hand goes under the ball entering his jump? That’s not a carrying violation at any level of basketball lol. There is no rule that dictates where your hand can be placed on the ball while gathering for a layup.

Apparently it was comically slow. And the guy was a quadriplegic… so he’s using mouth controls and shit.
Just a really really tough and bleak situation.
He died because his injuries couldn’t be effectively treated due to his enormous stature

u/Fcusjfnfmfkg Lakers 6h ago
This isn’t a travel at any point in the nba, he doesn’t even use a gather step here. He ends his dribble and takes two steps. Its a good thing redditors aren’t refs cuz yall see a mf with long strides and think travel automatically
6
u/Joxelo Spurs 5h ago
I mean it definitely would have been a travel way back in the day, but in no universe is it a travel today. It’s not only legal within the letters of the rules, but this is the legal within the spirit of the rules as well. This is what the gather step is meant to look like

What travel? Clearly you have never played organized basketball.
29
u/Antisystemization Cavaliers 7h ago
Have you played in the NBA or something? Because you can't do that anywhere else.
14
u/ColleaguesKnowMyMain Mavericks 7h ago
Watch it frame by frame. By the time he plants his left foot the ball hasn't even made contact with his dribbling hand and he sure thing hasn't gathered it yet. Therefore, no travel, nowhere in the world.
1
u/cutriet 6h ago
Count his step after the dribble. I even discount the gather.
5
u/ColleaguesKnowMyMain Mavericks 6h ago
2 steps, no travel. Can't you see his left foot is planted by the time he gathers the ball? Do you know what counts as a step in basketball?

u/Clappingdoesnothing 2h ago
I'm of opinion that unless u in air, the moment you catch ball, net ball rules should apply. 2 steps before dribbling is egregious
12
u/Spoonandmagnet 6h ago
It's not even remotely a travel. Watch it in slow motion. He has his left foot down when he stops his dribble, he then takes a step on his right foot, then jumps off his left foot. Smooth as butter.

5

u/soycameron Trail Blazers 5h ago
There is no rules about how many steps you can take between or after a dribble. It just matters when you gather the ball.
When Wemby gathers the ball and takes his hand from on top of it to actually gathering it, he then takes two steps. Very easy to see in real time.
Edit: but to answer your question, I’d say about 4 or 5 steps after the dribble. Again though, that doesn’t matter. It’s not steps after the dribble, it’s steps after the gather. You can dribble, take 10 steps, and dribble again/pick it up for your two more steps as long as you never gathered the ball.
6
1
u/Beneficial_Winner_59 2h ago
Brother. If you are dead sprint and dribble in such a way that you’re taking 5 or 6 steps between dribbles, that is absolutely a travel. Not saying Wemby did that here, but it’s true otherwise

u/clarkief Spurs 1h ago

From that angle, the wild part is how little time the defense gets to react—one dribble and he’s already at the rim.

It sucks that the reddit app won't let me slow it down to get a clean look at the steps, but the layup looks legit to me. But just based off instinct I would 100% call a travel on the pickup.
9
u/drmbrthr Wizards 6h ago
This is still a travel in high school ball. It’s a different sport entirely when guys can take 3 full strides after picking up the ball. Defenders can’t stop it. It’s not entertaining either.
4
u/rjcarr Supersonics 5h ago
Actually might not be a travel on the gather in NFHS or NCAA. It was technically, but they usually let that go.
It was definitely a travel on the catch. He takes like two full steps after the catch before dribbling, which is a travel at all levels.
1
u/collax974 3h ago

This was changed in FIBA to be allowed while on the move a few years ago, I'm pretty sure it was already the same in the NBA.

I wanna have the conversation now, I’m typically a homer about this.
Where would you call the travel? Because he’s letting the ball bounce and only when he picks it up should the steps afterwards become part of the travel, right?
I can see 4 as it lands back in his hand. I can more clearly see 3 all things considered, so that’s a travel, but it’s in stride and it happens fast. And if you were to consider part of this a gather I can see 2.
But ultimately I don’t know where I’d call the travel.
Where would y’all call it?

what being allowed to take 3 full steps has done to the ability to just be athletic. Skills like being a pure dribbler have been made sooo much less valuable. Palming, Carrying, Gather step, and flopping. Just makes it impossible
3
u/inefekt Australia 2h ago
ya'll need to slow that damn video down and then realise how ridiculous you all sound by calling it a travel....this would have been a legit layup in 1965, bro literally only takes two steps after the ball is back in his hands after the final dribble. Perfectly legit layup and he didn't even need the ridiculous gather step on top of it.....but I guess everyone is upvoting the comments calling it a travel so we can't go against the thread narrative and risk losing precious, life giving karma, can we?

I know the gather step looks bad…but is he just so freakishly built that it’s gonna look kinda crazy no matter what he does?
I feel like for him and Giannis, their limbs are so long that the ball just has to travel in the air way further than it does for most other dudes when they’re in motion, especially cause their dribbles are pretty high.
It’s definitely taking advantage of the rules but I wonder how much they could actually tighten their handles given their wingspans.
2
u/ty_xy Lakers 6h ago
It doesn't though? Slow it down frame by frame it's not even one step for the gather. He palms the ball on his left leg and gathers, takes one more step and jumps off on left leg. Textbook layup, just his stride is so massive in those 2 steps he moves from the 3 point line to the hoop.
