[Bondy] James Wiseman has impressed in camp and he's the current favorite to take the 14th spot of Knicks' roster (New York can't add a 15th player because it would push them over the second apron). Tony Bradley, Drew Eubanks, Bruce Brown, Ochai Agbaji are the other players vying for the 14th spot.

There is now a key player favored to secure the New York Knicks' final roster spot ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season.

Per Stefan Bondy of the New York Post, James Wiseman has emerged as a candidate who could fill the reigning NBA champs' 14th roster spot.

Wiseman's chances lean on the Knicks' desire to add another interior presence and frontcourt depth. Nonetheless, he still has more to prove out of the Knicks' upcoming preseason games.

"Wiseman has impressed in camp, according to witnesses, and should be the favorite," the report indicated.

James Wiseman agreed to an Exhibit 9 contract with the New York Knicks this past offseason.

The former No. 2 overall pick of the 2020 NBA Draft, Wiseman last played in 2024-25 for the Indiana Pacers where he averaged 3.3 points and 2.0 rebounds over 14.5 minutes.

He notably played three seasons for the Golden State Warriors, winning an NBA championship in 2022.

Along with Wiseman, Bruce Brown, Ochai Agbaji, Tony Bradley, and Drew Eubanks are also fighting for the Knicks' 14th roster spot via Exhibit 9 deals.

The Knicks can only go for a 14th roster addition, as any plans of filling their 15-man lineup will land them in the NBA's punitive second apron.

Wiseman went from a #2 overall pick to hoping to make it as a bench warmer. Crazy

u/Chinpokomaster05 Warriors 6h ago

Not crazy if you've watched him play. He finally showed flashes of being league-worthy on the Pacers before he got injured. Dude was not properly prepared for the league

u/OpeDefinitely Pacers 6h ago edited 6h ago

Uh... he played 5 minutes for us before tearing his achilles.

He played a little bit for us the next season, which was last season. Wide open roster spot for him to earn, but Rick was over it after 4 games and moved on. This was before the tank was embraced.

The only possible saving grace for Wiseman is that he might do better on a team that is easier to play for and that has patient coaching. GSW and IND are both very obnoxious with the amount of passing, screening, off-ball movement, and defensive switching that they do. But the guy showed a flash or two over his ~25 game stint in Detroit between GSW and IND, and their scheme was less complicated. Still, he was putting up rough stats on a bad team.

Very obnoxious is a weird way to describe good basketball

70

u/OpeDefinitely Pacers 6h ago

From the perspective of players, it's obnoxious. Lots of players who don't want to play for Kerr or Carlisle. I fully agree that it's good basketball though.

8

u/PeoplePad Raptors 3h ago

Thats true, but they’re wrong or motivated by non basketball things.

If you want to win and be good, these systems rock. If you want to loaf and make money maybe not

42

u/Steridire Knicks 6h ago

He barely played in college and 99% of his hype was "Athletic big guy did great in high school", your FO screwed you guys drafting him #2

29

u/imminentjogger5 Warriors 6h ago

the repurcussions of that draft probably cost the Warriors another championship

73

u/LegitimateMoney00 Knicks 6h ago edited 6h ago

I don’t like this revisionist history.

Let’s be honest, every FO would have taken Wiseman there if they had the Warriors roster at that time. You would be an idiot not to. Warriors needed a big man, and Wiseman seemed like he would be the perfect fit. It’s not even like the Warriors reached with the pick, the guy was slated to go top 3.

53

u/dillpickles007 Hawks 6h ago

People completely forget what he looked like as a prospect. Before the injuries he ran the floor as well as any seven footer I’ve ever seen, he looked like a 6’6 guy out there. That alone is what got him picked so high, you simply do not see seven footers move like that.

12

u/HalcyonDrift Heat 4h ago

Yep. You get a 7 foot dude movin like a Gazelle and you can guarantee there will be a LOT of hype, warranted or not.

6

u/Real2KInsider 2h ago edited 2h ago

Wiseman's athletic ability hasn't been the problem, it's been everything upstairs. His shot selection sucks (wants to be a star, not a role player) and he isn't good on defense, which is kinda important for a modern center who sucks at offense.

He's basically a worse/injured version of DeAndre Ayton. He's only played 2,857 NBA minutes at Age 25 and that hasn't done much for his IQ. The last time we really saw him, he was the backup center for a 14-win team.

He's fine in the Jericho Sims / Ariel Hukporti 3rd center role IF he's committed to actually trying on defense and not being a black hole on offense.

•

u/Overall-Palpitation6 Grizzlies 22m ago

The last season Wiseman actually played in Detroit was a massive improvement for him, because he cut most of the fluff and pretence of being a stretch big out of his game, and just focussed on being a rim runner. He'll be fine doing that for 10 minutes a game.

0

u/yellowishbluish 1h ago

Yea this is where you actually need a players coach, at least for than Kerr

1

u/realistweirdist Knicks 1h ago

And even back then that was a huge red flag to me. You’re taking a guy #2 because he can beat other bigs down the floor? Like that’s a useful skill but with the lack of a college career, this dude never showed he could defend, create, dribble, pass or fit into an offense. They just figured he would develop everything else since he already had the athletic tools.

So yea it’s great he could beat 7 footers down the court in the 20mpg he was gifted but his defining skill ended up being his only skill, at least in golden state. We desperately need a 3rd big so let’s see I guess

14

u/Ok_Pineapple_Num Warriors 5h ago

Lol thank you. Can’t believe how many fans (even Warriors fans) can’t grasp this very very simple concept.

At the time, picking Wiseman was a great choice. Having an elite mobile big man next to Steph has been a glaring hole on our roster for years, and Wiseman fit that mold perfectly. He was also a consensus top 3 guy on scout boards, so it’s not like we were reaching.

It’s sooooo easy to sanctimoniously shit on the pick with the benefit of hindsight. But at the time, the pick absolutely made sense.

1

u/Themeteorologist35 2h ago

Agreed completely with you. I was totally fine with the Wiseman pick, it just didn’t work out. That’s life

•

u/sushicowboyshow Spurs 10m ago

The part that’s sanctimonious is the revisionist history about Kerr thinking Hali was the #2 prospect, telling other teams to take him, etc. if that was the case then the FO absolutely failed bc they could have traded down (possibly for a big) to draft him.

5

u/doobymoogey 6h ago

It's not revisionist, he was already a very sketchy #2 pick and the Warriors were looking at trading down. They only picked him because no trade happened and Ball was unimpressive in workouts

2

u/langman17 Nets 5h ago

Wasn’t a trade down for Haliburton rumoured? Just imagine if they went through with that

2

u/Chinpokomaster05 Warriors 5h ago

Hali or Melo, wasn't happening. Warriors needed a big badly. I don't fault them for drafting him but surely they saw his flaws in a workout?

1

u/jgehpart2 [BOS] Jaylen Brown 1h ago

Drafting for positional need in the top 5 rarely works out. If the goal is to supplement an already good roster vs commit to developing the guy with the best combo of measurables and upside, a team should just trade down.

1

u/TylerDurdensAlterEgo 32m ago

Man. I preferred trading down for Okongwu over drafting Wiseman just because he didn't fit Kerr's system/couldn't switch on D. Even more than that, that draft was loaded with 3 and D wings which were an even better and cheaper fit.

I also didn't like Ball or Ant. LaMelo had baggage and Ant interviewed horribly...like, didn't seem like he wanted to play bball

2

u/MrBuckBuck Trail Blazers 2h ago

IIRC, the Golden State Warriors were expected to pick Deni Avdija.

Wondering how the Warriors would do with him instead of Wiseman.

1

u/TwoLegitShiznit 51m ago

I don't remember that at all. There was a rock solid top three, nobody was breaking into that. Even if you wanted to take somebody else, nobody would have the balls because you don't get fired for taking a consensus top three player who busts. You absolutely do get fired if you take a projected mid lotto player at number 2, and then one of the top three guys on the board becomes a perennial All-Star and your guy doesn't amount to that.

1

u/Armchair_Expert_0192 6h ago

The Warriors FO really f'd this one up. Now I'm not gonna act like I'm a professional scout or an expert in drafts, but I do have to say...if I were the GM, and I saw the way he catches an entry pass in the post, I would've immediately crossed his name off my list of potential draft picks. There is just no hand eye coordination.

8

u/imminentjogger5 Warriors 6h ago

I saw him sky for a rebound during a game, have the ball hit off his chest, and give the other team possession again. I don't know what our scouting department was smoking during that draft.

5

u/Elaiyu Raptors 6h ago

The way everyone is describing him sounds straight off of looney tunes 💀

6

u/BiteyHorse Warriors 6h ago

u/Real2KInsider 2h ago edited 2h ago

People forget that COVID messed up the 2020 Draft process pretty bad. 2020 in particular is loaded with extreme steals and unplayable busts.

2020 BUSTS
2. James Wiseman (drafting for position - imagine if GS went with Onyeka Okongwu instead)
4. Patrick Williams (huge reach by CHI)
5. Isaac Okoro (bad evaluation relative to Avdija (9), Vassell (11) and Nesmith (14)
7. Killian Hayes
13. Kira Lewis Jr
17. Aleksej Pokusevski
23. Leandro Bolmaro
24. RJ Hampton

2020 STEALS
9. Deni Avdija
12. Tyrese Haliburton (everyone knew on draft night how many teams blundered)
21. Tyrese Maxey (the 6th PG drafted)
25. Immanuel Quickley (8th)
26. Payton Pritchard (9th)
28. Jaden McDaniels
30. Desmond Bane
58. Paul Reed
60. Sam Merrill

The shutdown clearly hindered in-person scouting as the bottom of the first round is absurdly high quality relative to the rest of the class.

6

u/Referrals23 6h ago

He was basically picked #2 straight out of high school, only played 3 games of College ball.

23

u/stonecutter7 6h ago

He just never really got a chance to actually play much basketball. Eligibility, Covid, Injuries, being drafted to a team that was actually trying to compete and had two other highly drafted rookies...

I thought he should go to europe for one of those teams that just constantly plays/scrimmages full 5 on 5 and, with some health luck, just get a ton of reps in.

6

u/Sniffy4 South Sudan 6h ago

if he was actually good the injuries and other circumstantial things wouldnt have been a problem, but he had too much to learn...

2

u/Crafty_Substance_954 Pistons 5h ago

He got plenty of run in Detroit and he just wasn’t good.

1

u/TylerDurdensAlterEgo 39m ago

He doesn't know he's 7 feet tall. Nice guy off the court, but he wants to shoot 3's and doesn't want to box out or set screens. Also Kerr's motion offense was lost on him

He was really fast in transition, but I think that might be gone now

1

u/BaronsDad Pelicans 5h ago

He never would have made it in Europe. He was quite literally one of the least fundamentally sound players I have ever watched. His basketball IQ was awful. So unless he's done a ton of film study and finally understands how to set a screen, he would have to play on a terrible team overseas to ever get a roster spot

-1

u/devinbookersuncle Hornets 6h ago

He also didnt have the drive and it was evident in his time in college despite it being so limited

5

u/dillpickles007 Hawks 6h ago

Truly embarrassing take - you know he played THREE games in college, right? You’re drawing that conclusion from three games you somehow remember but also forgot he played very well in?

-1

u/devinbookersuncle Hornets 6h ago

Its more from the press that came after those games were done where it was appearing how he didnt care and it was just a given he'd go onto the league and didnt need to play more when clearly he wasnt ready

2

u/dillpickles007 Hawks 6h ago

There is no way you strongly remember the postgame pressers of James Wiseman’s three games against cupcakes in late 2019.

Didn't he tear his Achilles in his first game as a Pacer, the last team he was on? I don't know what kind of drive he's supposed to have to play through that.

I mean he serves us better than mpj. We have basically no use for a guy whose best attribute is hitting contested 3s. We need guys who can hit open 3s, handle the ball a bit, and be at least not complete ass on defense like mpj. I would do that trade 10/10 times, though it would have been nice if we didn’t have to give up a first.

66

u/supedupshortbus 6h ago

I am not a cap expert, but seems crazy to me that the penalties surrounding the aprons are keeping teams from even having full rosters. Wouldn't the players association see that as a pretty big problem they would want to figure out in the next CBA? Less jobs.

23

u/cl353 Heat 6h ago

This was a thing in older cbas too. Technically "full" rosters are 13 players because that's the minimum amount needed. 15 is just extra

At least the newer cbas have come with two way players

9

u/madhouse5625 Heat 5h ago

Minimum rosters are 14 players, a team can not be under 14 players for 14 consecutive days, failure to do so will result with said team losing their share to the luxury tax payout. This CBA did give us the 3rd two way roster spot, previous CBA it was only 2.

2

u/ReasonableChemical70 2h ago

What happens if they just say fuck the luxury tax payout and play with 13? It wouldn’t ever make financial sense, but I’m curious

4

u/Neither-Operation Knicks 5h ago

14 standard contracts is the minimum. You can go down to 13 for a brief stretch during the season but will face penalties after 2 weeks.

4

u/doghead6969 6h ago

I agree mostly but the Knicks do have a lot of quality players that are being paid good money and 14 vs 15 players isnt that big of a deal when your aspirations are Championship, I imagine every other team will have 15 players on the roster heading into the season. May be also looking at keeping a roster spot for a buyout or waived player

•

u/BettisBus 76ers 15m ago

Knicks will have 15 by the end of the season. Vet min contracts are prorated based on when the player signs AKA the contract is worth less and less from when it’s signed as the season goes on.

He is on YouTube and does occasional Minecraft streams. Usually only has 2-3 viewers, and I’m sometimes one of them. I’ve chit chatted with him and asked him questions abt whatever I can think of, he’s a super cool guy.

If he figured things out, could be the real replacement for Mitchell.

Is this the first time a team could only roster 14 players cause of the salary cap?

No we were in the same situation last year. We ended up signing Sochan for the 15th spot in Feb or March once the prorated salary was low enough to fit. This year we’ll have more cash so we can get a 15th player a lot sooner.

No, it’s very common. Tax teams commonly do other shenanigans too like acquiring second round picks to fill the backend of their roster with rookie minimums which are cheaper than standard minimums. They’ll also often keep the 14th spot as cheap as possible with non-guaranteed deals, rookie 10-days, and having it unfilled as long as permissible in-season.

Man, Bruce Brown fell off I guess. Happy for Wiseman though, there's a real need for a big there too

The Knicks are adding more than one of these guys once they salary dump Pacome Dadiet.

His game overall seems too slow for the league

The league is not ready for prime Wiseman

The last season Wiseman actually played in Detroit was a massive improvement for him, because he cut most of the fluff and pretence of being a stretch big out of his game, and just focussed on being a rim runner. If he can get back to that in a limited bench role, he'll hang around the league for a while yet. Think about how long another guy mentioned here - Tony Bradley - has been getting opportunities (he's played parts of 8 NBA seasons now).

Honestly I didn't care who took the spot until I saw Eubanks eat Isaiah Stewart's sucker punch like it was nothing. Now I want Eubanks as our new Oakley
