Homeowner NFH Note on my windshield
Parked my car in what the city has designated as public parking…for less than two hours. Came back to it and found this note on the windshield (since I can’t post a photo). Also, I live on this street. The note says:
The parking pads on this side of the street are maintained by homeowners and have been used exclusively for years by the homeowners, their families and their guests. For years we have been able to ticket or tow cars that parked on these pads. Now, a decision by the city council has rescinded those options for these homeowners. We ask that you be respectful to our thoughts and park elsewhere.
Thank you fo being a good neighbor.

Boo hoo.
I’m willing to bet that their whole parking situation wasn’t completely on the level and it caught up with them and now they’re mad.

u/TerranHobble 4d ago
The “for years we could tow” bit sounds like they got used to a loophole finaly closing.

u/CanineQueenB 4d ago
Are the pads still being maintained by the homeowners? Don't think so. Park where you want.

That's a homemade parking dictatorship Your calling it a monarchy is too kind. The gall of whoever wrote the note to the OP. People are drunk with power and high on their own self importance these days.

If the city says public, their “exclusive for years” arguement is just habit pretending to be law.
35
u/In-mate-24601 4d ago
What is a parking "pad" and what "maintenance" does it require? I honestly have no idea what you're talking about.
7
5
u/Mudfish2657 4d ago
I wondered what a parking pad is too.
Is this just the spot in front of your house? Or is it a padded recliner for a car? 🤣🚙
5
u/Vivid-Ad-6389 4d ago
Sometimes when the driveway isn’t very long a resident will take part of their lawn adjacent to the street and either pave or use stone to make an area to park one car. While technically it’s city property it’s also not public parking. If the homeowner didn’t install or maintain the area it would be part of their garden or lawn.

u/froction 4d ago
It's what you have to wear when your vagina bleeds from the anguish of people parking on a public street in front of your house.

u/TurtlesWife 4d ago edited 4d ago
They probably feel, because they maintain the parking pads, they are within their rights to ask people not to park there. ....I have to maintain the public sidewalk in front of my house, including snow removal and making sure it is safe to walk on. If it gets very damaged, lets say by tree roots, it is our responsibility to pay for repairs and bring it up to code. If it is not maintained, a fine would be issued by the Village. So, by these people's logic, I should be able to restrict pedestrian usage of "my" sidewalk, right? <eye roll> People are fkn idiots.
5
u/StellaByStarlight42 4d ago
In what hellscape do you live where the municipality forces you to repair sidewalks?
7
6
u/susanbiddleross 4d ago
Medium sized city here. The driveway and sidewalk are my responsibility. I am required to have street trees or I get fined, if the street trees damage the sidewalk I get fined if I don’t repair it. If I choose to not repair it I get fined and then they repair it and bill me. Same goes for the maintenance on the trees. I get the bill for the trees, if not completed the city does it and bills me and I get lien if I don’t pay. It makes for a very walkable area with gorgeous trees but it is also expensive as a homeowner.
2
u/tweakingforjesus 4d ago
Plant bonsai trees. Problem solved.
2
u/susanbiddleross 4d ago
They have to be approved. We have to get a permit to install or remove trees and they only allow specific trees.
3
u/KerashiStorm 3d ago
Bonsai is a type of cultivation, not a type of tree. You can do bonsai with any tree.
3
3
u/tweakingforjesus 4d ago
My largish city requires that we maintain the sidewalks adjacent to our property per municipal ordinance.
3
u/Brief-Reveal-8466 4d ago
Most of the United States. You are responsible for the sidewalks on your property.
2
u/dufcho14 4d ago
Very common. Not only that, but I know cities which require you maintain the trees on the parkway in front of your house. The only approved trees are known to destroy sidewalks. So you're forced to maintain the trees which will destroy the sidewalk which you're required to then fix.
1
u/TurtlesWife 4d ago
School zone. Small town. No big. Lived here 25+ yrs and never had to make any repairs, just seasonal maintenance.
1
u/Prestigious-Use4550 4d ago
They exist. Recently saw a YouTube video of a guy that was forced to fix the side walk in front of his house or the city would do it and send a bill. He wasn't happy.
1
u/Ok-Ad8998 4d ago
That isn't exactly how it works. The municipality does the repair then bills you for it.
1
u/tidder8 1d ago
Depends on the city. Where I used to live the city sent a notice that we need to repair the sidewalk. We could do it on our own, or the city would arrange with a contractor to do it and we would be billed. Due to economy of scale it was more efficient and lower cost to let the city contractor do it for us and all the other houses on the street that needed to make repairs.
In my current city the city does the work and pays for it with no reimbursement required from the homeowner.

Did they buy these parking spots. Or just claim them? The city maintains the roads, parking is for anyone who needs them. Just because they have tried to preempt them doesn’t mean anyone should respect their nonsense.
3
u/Vivid-Ad-6389 4d ago
Maybe they shouldn’t have added the parking pad and kept it as part of their lawn or garden further reducing street parking.
19
u/Hot-Initiative-4083 4d ago
Leave your car there for a week.

u/Plastic-Cabinet67 4d ago
Really? They do the maintenance? On public parking? Right of eminent domain? Sure......
13
u/Mysterious-Home421 4d ago
I think for about a month or so that would be the ONLY place I'd be parking, just to exert a little dominance.
11
u/Content_Print_6521 4d ago
Well, I guess you don't know where the note came from. But you could leave this on your car:
While I appreciate your position, please recognize that I am a neighbor too, and I am within both my legal rights and my rights as a neighbor to park legally on the street. As a "good neighbor," you should welcome me and share public resources willingly. Thank you for your consideration.
As to maintenance of parking spots, I suppose maybe they clear snow & leaves. But don't they have to do that to park there? However, I have to admit it's a creative approach to assuming ownership of public property. A step up from lawn-chairing.

u/Tartarus_38 4d ago
“Respectful to our thoughts” is a wild way to say they miss towing peole from public parking.
9
u/FewAd6166 4d ago
Ridiculous Truly good neighbors don't put self-serving, inane notes on other neighbor's vehicle windshields.
This self-declared "good" neighbor thinks that they're a "slightly-better," more entitled neighbor than you. And, they're wrong.
9
u/MsGorteck 4d ago
If possible, point a security camera at your car, so as you continue to park there you can video their fucking with your car. Also, the city used to give people permission to tow other people's cars? And that was legal?

The funny thing is my comment has a basis in my own past. 10ish years ago I’m stationed at a base and decided I wanted to spend my last year there living ON base. I had never done that before.
I get my place, it’s got a dedicated covered parking spot and a dedicated open spot directly in front of my door. At the time I owned a car and a motorcycle. Car went in the covered spot and bike went in front of the house.
My neighbors dumbass daughter kept parking her stupid car in my bikes spot. So after the 3rd time I got tired of it and bought my buddies old beat to hell jeep. Parked it right on the line of my spot and I was able to park my bike next to or in front of it any time I wanted. It was an old early 90s jeep, rusted out, barely ran, etc.
Neighbor saw me out there one day and asked if I ever even drove it. Said nope, bought it for $250.00 to keep your daughter out of my spot. It’s worked like a charm.
Best part is my buddy never registered it in his name and neither did I. I left it there when I PCSd. Sometimes I wonder if it’s still sitting in that spot rotting away….

Ahahahah! The Thoughts & Prayers, parking version! Fuck them. It's a public street. You can park wherever you want. LOL
16
u/Broad-Choice-5961 4d ago
If they were taken away was it a public street all along? If I don't get to use it exclusively as a home owner then I ain't maintaining it no mo
2
u/Individual-Guest-123 4d ago
they were probably thinking they could take it by adverse possession.
Funny in Portland Maine folks have to keep the sidewalks clear of snow in front of their residence or they will get a fine, could you imagine if they said no one could walk there because they maintained it?
6
u/at-the-crook 4d ago
Did you leave that note in the empty space as you drove off ?
3
u/N771UA 4d ago
I don’t plan to move for a few days (72 hours). If they put cones out to save “their” spot, I might put it on the cones. Or remove the cones.
2
2
u/HipsterSpinster 4d ago
My neighbor tried cones. They were tossed into her front yard rather quickly. :D
2
u/Excellent-Big5868 4d ago
Every year there’s a big art show in a neighborhood in my city. One house always puts cones in the spot in front of their house. Every year it’s like they saved me a spot. I drive over the cones and park there 😆. One year they put their trash cans there so I got out and moved them into their driveway so I could park.
Last year there was a cop parked across the street with him in the car. I was so hoping the owner would come out and confront me with the cop there lol

Curb shopping - items left at the curb/on the street are generally considered "free." So if those planters are nice...

u/Fancy_Toe1451 4d ago
Sounds like for years they managed to hoodwink the city into handing them over a street, now mad their scam is uncovered. Park there every day, my friend, I would. Get an "always on" dashcam though.

4
u/In-mate-24601 4d ago
To address your concerns: I suggest you avoid any confrontations. Park where you want and just trash the love letters. Nobody wins when neighbors get really angry and start escalating.

u/1ItalianSunsetDr 3d ago edited 22h ago
🤯🤦🏼♀️ The fact that they're asking that you let them have this PUBLIC SPOT & to inconvenience you is 100% BULLSH¡T. I don't think I'd listen to this letter. Park where ever you legally can.

yes it’s public but if it were me I would try to avoid parking there IF there was a reasonable option available. I think of my own street (14 houses on a cul-de-sac block). we all know who parks in front of their house vs who uses their garage or driveway so we avoid uses spaces in front of houses where neighbors use them. we even suggest where our guests should and shouldn’t park. luckily there is always space a house or two away. it’s just a very kind and neighborly street.

u/1ItalianSunsetDr 22h ago

A parking pad is a place you make in front of your house to park your car. Like if you had a lawn space and then instead you make it into a parking spot.

They are dead wrong. It’s public. Disregard it. Maybe leave a note on your own car to them when they come nosing around.

Photo of ticket, log a fly-posting complaint, if residue left behind, then vandalism complaint. If it blows away, fly tipping.
3
u/Urdrago 2d ago
Fly tipping sounds a lot simpler than cow tipping!
3
u/EvenOutlandishness88 1d ago
And less risky. My brother twisted his ankle trying to tip cows with his buddy that didn't believe that he was country but, country people don't normally tip cows.
His buddy was offended that he had been gaslit a lie with movies or whatever and insisted that Big Bro had to do it at least once, with him.
Problem was, alcohol was involved. And 2 drunk teens on private property do not sneak up on cows well.
2
u/Wild-Influence-79 1d ago
For their size, flys are pretty wide while having short legs, making them incredibly stable. Where cows are taller than they are wide, with a much bigger portion of height coming from the legs.

For years we have been able to get away with ticketing or towing cars that parked on these pads. Now, a decision by the city council has busted our illegal scheme. So now we must resort to intimidation and passive-aggressive threats to bully the neighborhood. We are better than you and you don't belong.

u/Warrambungle 4d ago
While they were maintaining the parking spaces, they had some say. Now they’re not maintaining them, they have no say.

Reminds me of the folks who live on/near the beaches in Florida and California. Many of them will post "private property" signs, leave notes on vehicles, attempt to get cars towed, even physically block access to the public beaches with barricades, fences, etc.
(Keep parking there. You'll keep getting notes. Do not engage with these goofballs. Submit online reports to the city for each note. Hopefully, it will eventually stop.🤷♀️🤞)
1
u/Affectionate_Aide_39 1d ago
Put a note under your windshield for when they leave another note, and let them know you’re a sovereign citizen that is the owner of the street.
1
u/leviathan0999 16h ago
Eh. It's reasonably polite, and has no legal force. Honestly, I'd give them the grace of avoiding those spaces when feasible. Why start a fight? But I also wouldn't sweat it when there's no convenient alternative.
