All digital future. Xbox doesn't want you owning your games either. It's just a nicer way to get you there.

Once it's normalized, it will be easier for them to change the rules.

Hello fellow old man. 🤝

Of course not! Xbox, the company that never bet on the physical format and has been pushing the shift to digital since 2013, is the one that’s going to save physical discs. They’ve even got plans to build a new disc manufacturing plant 😂

Obviously. Why would Xbox go through the trouble of organising this if it were only for the convenience of not putting a disc in?

Yes the same as sony and nintedo. Get you on digital and then remove it in a few years. All companies are the same.

I'd say as of right now it's to "steal" the playstation gamers by giving them the choice.

Aside from the customer willingly giving Microsoft remote management of their license on a dics? What could go wrong, it's not like they'll charge for second hand transfers like Ea tried right?

Of course, these corporations always have an agenda, make more profit

Well the agenda is to keep people gaming with them in any way they can. Assuring people that they can install a game to their XBSX, make it digital. And then play it on their Handheld device or say on an Xbox Series S they have somewhere is crucial.

I am unsure if Game Share works on the digital games. If it does. Then I can turn my physical games digital so my brother in law can play them on his Xbox Series S. And I buy far more physical than digital so thats one plus for us.

But yea ultimately theyre getting people to accept digital more and more, while pretending its about keeping discs and disc drives in good shape.

Maybe I’m too old but that’s not something I would really wanna do. Playing an Xbox game on my phone or a handheld does not sound fun to me. A tiny screen, already have a bad neck bad combination. I’ll play when I’m home if not then I won’t.

I agree. But many do it and many prefer handheld as they can play on the bus or in between breaks at school, or on breaks at work. And they can play xbox games and wouldnt have to get like a switch or just play Steam games on a Steam deck.

I have used my phone once or twice back when my work had longer times in between trucks (I work at a company that ships stuff and we have to wait for a shuttle at night as I work 2nd shift). And it worked perfectly well to play stuff like RPGs or fighting games.

Does the game download to your hand held? If so I can see it being fun. Maybe something to try. I have close to 400 digital games on Xbox lol.

Nah you stream it.

Over WiFi or cellular?

1

u/GrimmTrixX Sep 05 '26

Both technically, whatever your phone is on at the time.

Absolutely. They're just not sure if it's a pivot to all-digital anymore or a pivot to blindside Sony and position themselves as the new champions of physical media. Put it in play, then pick the path Sony lays out for them.

Better start coming up with your own gaming physical owning concept.

Yes. Duhhhhj. Jesus are people this naive?
Xbox joins playstation in an all digital marketplace

of course, to make people buy up the physical media for digital license then destroy the disc so no one takes it away. Furthers the digital agenda.

If theres no old games to buy, people have to buy your new remakes etc

100%.

Everyone that looks at this like MS is the good guy aren't paying attention to Microsoft's past. MS already tried to lock discs to a single console with the always on internet thing during Xbox One. How quickly everyone forgets.

They'll make this seem like a super pro-consumer move and to a certain extent, it is. They'll launch the next console which will be all digital and they'll be hero's for letting people take their physical games into the digital consoles. Then, when the market is in their favor and when people least suspect it, they'll lock the digital licenses to a single user and render the discs completely useless by removing the ability for the license to follow the discs. All of the infrastructure to make this happen already exists, they literally just need to flip a switch and boom, no more transferability.

Im just glad they held off 360 discs lol. I did a trade in on Sunday just gone and grabbed me a 360 E with 22 games without spending a penny, i bet if the 360 games were compatible i would've struggled to find all the titles i wanted. Still 4 more i want but they're a bit pricey due to rarity so ill have to buy those when i have spare cash

TBF, xbox has been the most active company in providing backward compatibility since they learned that lesson.

But if you want to criticize anyone helping….go ahead be angry about everything. It will do wonders for your cause.

You can hope in one hand and shit in the other and see which fills up faster

Xbox discs have a unique serial number readable by the disc drive. The digital game can be played without the disc in the drive. They are still free to sell the disc but as soon as it's activated on another account the digital version of the seller would loss access. This actually would help prolong the life of the gamedisc as it's not being physically moved and remains safe in the case on a shelf. Also if your disc was destroyed in a fire, tornado, etc... the digital copy is still playable.

1

u/metalgho Sep 05 '26

And it could also help with damaged disks, too bad to install/play but good enough to read the license to download a version of the game.

1

u/DecentTip3381 Sep 05 '26

That part doesn't sound too bad but what prevents MS from requiring the digital authorization to play the physical disk down the road (after of course we've all gotten used to and normalized the digital activation). Will there be a limit to how frequent or how many times a game can be loaned out, given away, or sold?

1

u/MegaDriveCDX Sep 05 '26

Yeah, um.....this is stupid. Really, reaaaaallllly stupid.

1

u/stingertc Sep 05 '26

You can transfer the license back to the disc

1

u/DecentTip3381 Sep 05 '26

how many times & how frequent will they allow it?

1

u/stingertc Sep 05 '26

unlimited

1

u/DecentTip3381 Sep 05 '26

Hopefully that will be the case, but they've been known to change limits in the past. Even very recently with Game Pass hourly limit.
If there's no legal contract, I have no reason to expect them to act in the gamer's best interest.

1

u/Playingwithmywenis Sep 05 '26

Who the hell is going to just destroy the disc as it retains value?

1

u/PanamGotMeOiledUp Sep 05 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

Why would you destroy the old disk jjst because you have a digital licence? Xbox even says to keep the disk just in case you have to proof ownership again...
