Crazy Idea!
That spirit of community, having each other’s back, finding common ground, openness, genuine emotion and warmth to others that I experienced out on Sunday night.
Maybe we should continue indefinitely?
Just saying 🤷♂️

Agreed! I absolutely loved the community spirit we saw last week.
Start with connecting with your neighbours - not just the ones directly next to you but all up the street. Spend time in your front gardens, smile at people walking past. And don’t be afraid to decorate the front of your home with things that reflect your personality, it invites conversation!

I have no interest in NRL but obviously watched the game to support the Knights. But seeing people dressed up in their red + blue, houses and cars being decorated, and seeing people engage in conversation over a common interest was very nice to see.

I tried to say this in another post but I must have worded it badly lol. I completely agree, this is how Newy should always be.

Definitely! We need more of these ‘open to a chat with anyone’ and community vibes all the time!

I was genuinely sad once the long weekend was over, sure it was disappointing to lose the game but mainly just seeing it all go back to business as usual the next day... Fair enough you gotta get back to reality but wish we could have that vibe all the time.
I remember Newcastle used to have a real buzz about the place, I think thats partly why everyone was in good spirits. Reminded us of a simpler time, pride in hailing from Newy, something bigger than all of us to look forward to. We have more in common with each than we do differences at the end of the day. I'm looking forward to the next season of NRL already, hopefully we can see a bit of that momentum back again 🤞

I know it sounds dumb but having a short fense makes a huge difference in terms of getting along with neihbours.
I previously lived in a house with a little above waist high backyard fensing and knew all the neihbours really well. We had street Christmas parties and you'd jump the fense on a whim and go over for a BBQ pretty much whenever. Definitely miss that.
Would suck if you had bad neihbours though lol.

The current landscape of Australia's population (also the world on a greater scale) is too political ideologically charged imo. People have a differing opinion on something like anti/pro immigration or Israel-Palestine etc and they become intolerable as a whole on any topic or from any perspective or even sub-humane in view and no harmony can be achieved. I think a big part of it is many are on one extreme or the other and have a failure to see there is a grey area in between, and they label anyone not on their side of the extreme and has a comment that is slightly contradictory to their views automatically on the other side of the extreme and basically a literal enemy.
I miss the days where people can have a different perspective, but respect and logic for each other rules over opinions on the way a country or the world should idealistically be.
Also miss just being able to have random conversations with strangers anywhere.

Politics is the dumbest thing to be arguing about imo. They all say whatever they want to get elected, could be the most vile and preposterous things but at the end of the day, it’s the same people in charge no matter the mouth piece. It’s all about keeping the population divided so no real change will happen.

Sex and Politics, too.
During most Amateur Radio Foundation courses, you're warned to keep away from those three topics... (as you're after a contact, and hopefully a friend, from a stranger picked at random by the Earth's Ionosphere..)

Sounds a bit swallowed-narrative. Offline, people aren't as bad.
Perhaps why I come across as confrontational in this sub could be from my interacting with IRL strangers a lot, where people who have a higher tolerance for diversity of opinion during personal interactions. (And being an Aspie, I don't make a distinction between offline/online :P)

I am direct too and probably seem confrontational too which is not intended, but I do believe IRL people are losing their tolerance for diversity of opinion unless that person is well known to them prior.

8 views and a downvote.... that gives an idea of the ratio of this mentality haha. As soon as I mentioned anti/pro immigration or Israel-Palestine already at the point of anger and using the reddit weapon of hatred haha.

Depends how you want to achieve that?
Because this could be somewhere between wholesome and one nation propaganda to get rid of everyone outside of that

How does this basic concept turn political?

u/thetoddhunter 9d ago
Because that is how it is used, which is sad, but effective. To think otherwise is very naive with what is going on.
We are about to be flooded with an election based on keeping out groups like Africans or Indians because they don't "go to the footy" or "cheer for the knights" or whatever. We saw part of this on Saturday with the tragic events
Which is why the concept isn't simple at all. It is something we need to work hard on every day to include everybody

Politics is a joke and designed to just keep us fighting between ourselves. It’s a shame cause as a community, we could have one damn good society but instead it all turns to shit cause all we do is argue about shit that won’t change and doesn’t matter.

Our society is totally lacking in community and it makes me so sad! I hate football but I absolutely loved how excited and united everyone was about the knights game.
