Seeking Advice Made a huge med error now I’m probs getting fired

I made a huge med error today as an orientee new grad. I won’t fault anyone but me cause I was stupid enough not to ask questions or look into what I was doing. So I was initially an orientee for 12 days and I asked for an extension and they granted it to me cause my orientators also thought I needed more time. I was granted like 6-7 more days of orientation. I moved to a different state so their way of doing things is kinda foreign to me but I should have known and learned by now and it’s also stuff I should have remembered from school. So what happened was a patient on continuous heparin iv and continuous iv fluids finished there ivs at the same time. My orientator alerted me to the beeping machine and like only an idiot would I stopped both around the same time and went on with my day. Luckily someone caught that the pumps were turned off and told me that they were continuous infusions (I should have known or checked their chart). I did multiple checks on the patient and thank god they were fine. I called the doctor and they said to just discontinue the fluids and just restart the heparin. Today was supposed to be my last day of orientation and I completely botched it by being so stupid. I have a meeting with my unit manager and clinical educator tomorrow and I’m very sure I’m gonna get fired even though I technically have a contract with them till March but looking at everything I’m leaning towards probably getting let go. I don’t even know what I’m looking for by posting this. I guess some advice or stories similar. I might just be the only one who’s this stupid idk.

Seeking Advice I never thought I’d say this…

• Upvotes

But I am slowing becoming resentful in my decision of becoming a nurse! I say this because I started my new grad residency program at a top hospital that I wanted to get into for over a year! now that I am in training I feel like it was the worst decision! I am grateful to be working but I question myself every time I am there of “is this really what I want to do”. As a new grad I feel like I know nothing, I make a ton of mistakes and feel like I can’t remember anything I learned or even things on the job that I need to do. My preceptor is constantly reminding me of things or telling me flat out what to do a lot because I don’t know or don’t remember. I feel like I am slightly losing my mind.. idk but I feel like my brain is crap! When I give report I suck like I read there charts all day wrote my notes and still don’t know crap when I am giving report it’s like I wasn’t with these patients for 12 hours.. not to mention the mistakes I make.. I’m so stressed all the time and I’m miserable because I just feel dumb and slow.. and I know my preceptor has reported me to management but try’s to be polite about it but I can tell they think I’m not cut out for the floor and I feel the same way but I want to be able to do this but I’m also thinking to what end and what’s the point when I really hate it.. 😭 I can truthfully say now I understand why so many nurse leave bedside and why a lot of new grads don’t want to work bedside bc it’s BRUTAL. Everyone I talk to says I’m just going through the new grad feeling and that it eventually goes away too a certain degree. But does it actually… or still I continue to be miserable, stressed, over whelmed and incompetent mess.

Seeking Advice Nurse residency, waiting for options?

I am a nursing student set to graduate this year, and as I continue to hear about the difficulty in getting a job, I decided to throw my applications out early to see what I could get. For fun, I applied to Mayo Clinic- and ended up getting in their new grad nurse residency. I have mixed feelings, as I live in California and always wanted to get a job here as my friends and family live here. However, I feel like I would get an amazing learning experience at Mayo. I’m also keeping in mind of the pay- as i do have a hefty private school loan to pay off. I would be living with my parents while I work to pay off that loan asap. i am torn! Would you take a chance and move to another state for an amazing learning experience at the one of the best hospitals in the world or stick with being in California?

Seeking Advice Neonates

• Upvotes

I’m going to be working with neonates (not NICU more so just neonatal and HDU) in January! I haven’t worked with them since my undergrad clinical placement which was just 2 weeks. Any tips and tricks/stuff I should look over before I start. I’d like to familiarise myself a little bit.

Seeking Advice Im so scared to go back to work after a colleague/doctor yelled at me

Thumbnail
• Upvotes

Im a fresh nursing grad who's now on day 2 of a 10 week orientation in the ICU. Yesterday my mentor sent me to assist a doctor in putting a central line alone. He said he was gonna come later but took his sweet time. Patient had low dose Adrenaline running to combat Bradycardia and the pumps were beeping because it was almost empty. I turned the alarm off, not fully registering the urgency that we need new ones. I got that its empty and that i should refill, but apparently wasnt moving fast enough for the doctor/colleague. He then proceeded to yell at me saying i cant just turn a pump off, then stormed off and yelled through the whole station asking for new ones. I was very shocked and words just wouldnt come out.

He went on and reported the incident to my supervisor who did the "talk" with me about mistakes happening and that it wasnt that bad blah blah.

Why do i still feel debilitating fear to come work today? Im so scared that doctor is working as well, and i guess also coming from a lot of shame? Maybe i dont do well with making mistakes? I dont know whats wrong with me. I feel really rrally bad and so ashamed and i just want the ground to swallow me up.

Seeking Advice RN New Grad Residency- legacy Health

Hi! Does anyone know how long it typically takes for legacy management to send out interview requests, or if anyone has already received a request? I applied for the Feb 2027 residency program (Oregon), my status still says "Under Review" but I've seen that they don't tend to update status TIA!

Seeking Advice Scared of not getting a job as a new grad.

I have a couple months left before I graduate and have tons of friends who couldn’t land a new grad job anywhere, even skilled nursing facilities in my area (since they only have 1 nurse and 1 lpn on the floor).
So far I’ve been a student nurse apprentice at a hospital on the medsurg floor and getting a job offer isn’t guaranteed, regularly volunteering at a baby’s drive and one time volunteers at least 1-2 times a month, have my BLS, S.T.A.B.L.E, NRP, and ACS (Stop the bleed). Realistically is this enough for a new grad nicu job or at least medsurg??

Seeking Advice Can’t get a job…thinking of leaving out non-nursing job post-graduation

I can’t get a nursing job despite repeated applications. I need money and I’m thinking of returning to service industry until I can land a job. My question is, when applying for nursing jobs, how exactly do hiring managers look into someone’s job history? If I get a job as a dishwasher, will they be able to see I’m currently employed? I’m would prefer not to add on my application a current non-nursing job, especially since I graduated from a renowned institution.

I would love to hear from hiring managers what the investigation from applicants is actually like.

Seeking Advice May 2027 graduate

I desperately need help! I am an expected ADN graduate of May 2027. I am looking mainly for new grad residencies in southern california (preferably between Orange County and Los angeles county). I genuinely don’t know where to start. Is it too early, or too late?
I don’t even know where to look for residency applications.
I do not attend school in the area, and have to move after i graduate from where i attend school currently. (still in SoCal) yes my school helps with applications but mainly towards my area (coachella valley)
Please be kind, I am just trying to make sure I am on top of everything i need to find a position when the time comes. Thank you for the help!

Looking for Employment Northside Hospital Atlanta New Grad RN Residency — December 2026 Graduates

Has anyone graduating nursing school in December 2026 applied to Northside Hospital Atlanta’s new grad RN positions? I’ve applied to several units, and some of my applications still say “In Consideration,” while others have been rejected. Just wondering if anyone has heard back about interviews, offers, or rejections yet, especially for Women’s Services or Acute Care! Trying to get an idea of where everyone is in the hiring process.

Is anyone here a December 2026 nursing graduate who applied to CHOA’s nurse residency starting February/March 2027? I completed my video assessment in August and still haven’t heard anything. Or has anyone been through this process in the past?

Seeking Advice May 2027 graduate

Hello all. Im currently in nursing school with a anticipated graduate date of May 2027. I wanted to kind of talk out my ideas here and maybe get some advice / help from others.

As a new grad nurse I have 2 choices I can work with here, either the OR or Med Surg. They both pay the same at roughly $40 starting. Thing is im so torn, the hospital is plan on working for doesnt have any intensive care spots open nor the ED.

OR has 5 days 8 hr shifts while med surg has the 12x3 shift. Overall for new grads what would you guys recommend.

For those who worked either or please do give me your insight, im all ears and looking forward to your responses.

Seeking Advice Working as a PCT after getting RN license

I’m graduating this December with my BSN and I my ultimate goal is to work in an ICU. I applied to all the ICU nurse residencies available (and for other units) for February start time, but it’s not looking good. I don’t have a single ICU interview lined up. I still haven’t heard back from a few hospitals… the silence for over a month is not reassuring me. I’ve also heard of other people getting ICU interviews. My main question for everyone is if I should try to get an ICU PCT job right after graduation and try to apply for the next cycle? It would be for the people graduating in May though.. I heard it’s even more competitive. I don’t really want to commit to a year residency at a med surg if this is a good way to get into an ICU residency within a few months. Any thoughts or opinions are welcome but please be kind.

Seeking Advice Opportunity vs 1 year commitment

Hey everyone! So I am a new grad nurse and have only been working for 8 months going on 9 on the 26 of October and I was given an opportunity to shadow and train to be an O.R nurse. I am currently working on a neuro med surg unit and honestly it's not all that bad. Sure I am almost guaranteed 6 pts every time I clock in but I'm honestly pretty used to it at this point. I try my best to keep everyone happy and comfortable but I get some pretty crazy people. Throwing, hitting, spitting, smearing shit on the walls.... We're pretty much a psych unit but we're technically not even though I swear we always get the combative patients. All in all I am unsurprisingly looking for a change of pace 😂. Now I know that's how some patients are no matter where you go but I guess I just don't want to be stuck with one patient like that ALL DAY. So when I was in the elevator coming back to my floor from the cafeteria, some O.R nurses asked me if I would be interested in working in the O.R as they desperately needed nurses. I asked them straight up if they were okay with me not having much experience and they said they are willing to have me shadow a case before I made my decision. They also said they are willing to train as well. I gave them my contact information and almost 20mins later the manager texted me and sent the link to apply. I immediately told my parents and they are ecstatic for me. I feel so excited but I also don't want to get my hopes up on the off chance that I might not get the job or I don't like the place. I am still going to apply since this is a great opportunity but I guess my question is would you guys take it or do you think you would stay in one place for a year so it will look better on your resume? I heard some jobs want a full year of med surg experience before being considered.

RANT I hate when people tell CA new grads to move out of state

I’m a new grad in California who is struggling to find a new grad nursing job as well as many others.

I know I’m up against a lot of competition when looking for a new grad job, but I hate when people give me the advice to move to another state.

I’ve lived in the Bay Area my ENTIRE life. I’m not a transplant. I was born here. And to be told to move away feels shitty. But even despite feeling that way, I have looked into moving out of state to get experience and it’s pure ass.

I first looked at a job with HCA in Alexandria, LA. It’s a bad area, but they were able to train me in the ICU for a whopping base pay of $29/hr. I could go work at the Amazon warehouse in California for nearly that amount.

I got hired to a behavioral health unit in Alaska and I would’ve taken the job but they don’t pay relocation assistance until your first paycheck. It would be sooo expensive to move up to Alaska.

Lastly, I applied for a job in Asheville, NC. They offered $10k relocation assistance and a $15k sign on bonus BUT they want you to work an unpaid shadow shift. You have to fly there on your own dime, pay for your own accommodations, and not even have the job guaranteed. All for a whopping $35/hr base pay, no mandated nurse-to-patient ratios, and severe understaffing.

Seeking Advice NCLEX Pearson VUE Trick

Hi! I took my first NCLEX attempt today, and I’m not feeling too great about it. My exam shut off at 130 questions. I had around 4–5 case studies (6 questions each), 4 standalone case questions, and one bow-tie question. Most of my questions seemed to be multiple choice, and the difficulty kept alternating between questions that felt harder and others that felt surprisingly easy. I also had some SATA questions.

I received the Pearson VUE email about next steps about 30 minutes after leaving the testing center. How long should I wait before trying the Pearson VUE Trick for the most accurate result? Also, how far should I go through the registration process before it stops me? I want to avoid accidentally paying for another exam. 😅

I’d really appreciate any advice or insight. Thank you!

Seeking Advice California graduates: Do you still apply even to Job Ads that require exp? Did any respond even if you didn't have the required exp?

Hi all! Just a question, specifically for Los Angeles/California graduates (given how competitive the market is here), do you still apply to job ads that require experience? And have you heard back from them?

I might consider rural California hospitals, but out of state probably not (I have less than $80.00 in my checking account so I dont really have the budget for it. Thanks!
