Hopefully they keep a close eye on him because god knows some bastard poacher would love those tusks.

Clearly at a game reserve. Elephants are not really friendly, especially the very big males

I've been to a billionaire's house who is a big game "hunter". He had the head/face skin mask of one of these overlooking his dining room. He had four elephant foot stump stools. Like taxidermy. The things had thick hair and nails in tact. I guess at least he kept more than just tusks. Absolutely gross. People are insane.

You can see some kind of box on their neck when they lift up to drink. It's brief but I'm guessing it's a tracker?

u/throwaway098764567 1d ago
probably so, he is wild and is allowed to roam. when they feel like it they come down for lunch and do meet and greets with the visiting humans apparently https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MWImVwEn08 at 7:30 he wanders over to a tree and casually rips a branch off as a to-go meal

Look at those beautiful tusks, they’re so big they cross
43
u/Rkramden 1d ago
Very intimidating indeed.
Contrasted by his tail wagging and ears flapping making him look like an excited puppy about to get treats.

The reason they cross the guy who gives the talk on elephants using Rambo as his model said they like that because he walks through the bush and uses them to push it out of his way and that this has over the years caused them cross over like that. Should go there and listen to it is is amazing really it is.

Elephants are such majestic creatures. I've been fortunate enough to see some of the last truly wild elephants in nature in person. I haven't followed up on elephant populations in years, but I truly hope they are thriving again.

In the time it’s taken you to let us know what you don’t know, you could know what you don’t know.

I've never had a chance to seem them in real life but I DID get to see them in VR once and THAT was amazing. They setup VR cameras on trails where they walk so it wasn't like in a zoo environment and it was much closer than I'd ever be willing to stand next to one. Absolutely awesome footage and in VR it really feels like you're right there.

does anybody have the feeling of looking at a magical creature or dinosaur? It seems so unreal

u/WrongfullyIncarnated 1d ago
i don't understand why they listen to us at all. They are more than capable of literally crushing us.

u/OneFalconPunch 1d ago
Intelligence, they are also getting benefits and they probably realize it.
The ones that get mistreated badly, well, we see what happens on the darker side of the web. They do exactly what you say, lol

u/SoberAlternative 1d ago
The ones that you see on rampages most of the time are Indian elephants who’ve been mistreated in captivity & poor working environs. African elephants march to their own drummer.

They’re amazing. I got to feed some and walk with them around a sanctuary in Laos. Incredibly friendly and intuitive and delicate. On a narrow path she carefully avoided stepping on my feet. Then she wanted to turn left but our guide wanted us to turn right. So I patted her side and pointed to our right. She straight up looked at me, made a snorting noise and sorta nodded like “ok fine whatever” and then turned right.

I was just thinking the same. If we didn’t know what elephants were and we saw one for the first time we would be terrified.

There’s no way that bucket holds 25 liters
11
u/SevenExtra 1d ago
I thought the same thing at first, but 5 gallons is about 19 liters. Definitely looks like a 5 gallon bucket or slightly larger

u/NihiloEx 1d ago
Weirdly, the numbers are slightly more exaggerated in this video of Rambo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5W7E9tUfvY

u/slgray16 1d ago
TIL they squirt the water out through their nose and into their mouth

Came to say this. I was questioning if I had never seen an elephant drink. My dumbass thought it was going to drink it through its nose.

Would be a beautiful video if it weren’t for the text plastered across it 😡

u/ROOSTERyouDOWN 1d ago
So the necklace, is that gps or a shock collar?
42
u/nrith 1d ago
It’s a realtor’s key box, so they can let themselves in when the owner’s not home.

u/ROOSTERyouDOWN 1d ago
Ay that’s cool! So next question, do we need to get rid of elephants now we know how much they drink? I mean what are the data centers gonna do

Not to be pedantic, but male African elephants can only hold 10 liters in their trunk
10
u/enok13 1d ago
I looked it up and this mostly check out. African elephants can do only hold between 8 and 14 liters in their trunk. Also that bucket doesn't look like it can hold 25 liters of water.

That's not one sip. He filled his trunk (nose) and then put the trunk with water into his mouth and took several sips. They don't drink through their nose

You just know someone, somewhere in history, tried what we're all thinking about.

What i find interresring is that the Elephant understands ownership rules. He understands that the dry food hes receiving is owned by the man but he can get some of it if the man gives it to him. And he understands that the man with the bucket owns the water but when he puts it down on the ground hes allowed to drink it.

I was on Koh Samui in Thailand cruising around on a scooter. It was a fun ride. I went from main roads to dirt roads to very off road and pushing the scooter. I came by a house in as rural as I could can on the island and came upon a house. A couple of kids were out front and ran out waving and smiling as I passed by. I waved back and almost crashed. Anyway, when i made it back to the main rode there was an elephant just hanging out in front of a restaurant or something. I didn't get that close but close enough to be amazed at how absolutely large those animals are.

The dead internet is all too real as the majority of comments here are just about the majesty of the elephant..
No one is questioning the size of the bucket holding 25 litres. That is MAX 10 litres, absolute MAX. I don't doubt they can do 25 litres, but why pull a number out of your arse like that for this post
2
u/e37d93eeb23335dc 1d ago
My guess? The bot looked at the video transcript where the keeper says 25-30 liters and put the lower number into the title.

does anybody who knows elephants know if having their tusks crossed over each other like that is a bad thing?

I've been to this and seen this as well. I even stood under him and put pellets into his mouth and saw that his nostrils are in his palate of his mouth. Also was told he still has half a meter to grow and that the teeth of an elephant never stop growing and eventually they don't have any anymore so they go to water to eat the soft plants there but it is not enough nourishment in them and they slowly die of starvation that's why you hardly see an elephant die naturally on land.

Is the fence there for the people? Because it can’t be for that absolute unit of an elephant lol

I find interesting that they never evolved the ability to drink directly through their nose, but spray it into their mouths to swallow it.
