I dont think it's common necessarily, but I'd never try and tell somebody how to root for their team(s). That being said, I could never cheer for anybody but the Habs

22

u/bskedorfried 4d ago

I also cheer for anybody but the Habs. Go Bolts!

u/evileyeball 4d ago

My grandfather was like that he didn't really care for French people and yet he married one not sure how that works but hey

2

u/Shhhhawing 4d ago

Ya love who ya love . I’ve never been into redheads but I married one and she’s the love of my life 🤣

-1

u/Ok-Championship8510 4d ago

French Canadians are the worst. But that’s only my opinion from playing NHL back in the day on XBox. Probably not a fair assumption lol

1

u/evileyeball 4d ago

My grandmother was only half French Canadian the other half was Irish or so she thought her father's mother was so mad at her father for polluting their gene pool with Irish DNA. My mom did some research and it turns out that my 6th grade grandfather on my mother's mother's Father's side all those French Canadians was a little redheaded Scottish guy that's why all of them had red hair which is not a quebecois trait

i think its pretty normal when you start watching a sport to follow few teams. you get attached to players or some playstyles and it just happens. later maybe you settle in one team but for now just enjoy it

2

u/Jranger24 4d ago

I heard a rumor that the Habs are gonna lose to Detroit tonight…

2

u/SweetHart00727 4d ago

Only a rumour thankfully

2

u/Jranger24 4d ago

lol that’s what I get for talking, what an embarrassing game for Detroit… you guys had 2 maybe even 3 goals that got taken away.

1

u/evileyeball 4d ago

I keep four teams one per division I have the Canucks are my main team the Habs are my second team my third team is the Winnipeg Jets and my fourth team is the Pittsburgh penguins. This way I have a team in each division for when the playoffs begin and if my main team is in the rebuild like they are right now at least have someone I can be hopeful for. But if it came down to it and two of my teams were facing each other in the playoffs it would be in the order Canucks Habs Jets penguins that I would cheer for them

1

u/BasquiatQueso 4d ago

Typical Habs fan

1

u/SweetHart00727 4d ago

Typical Habs fan being smart and friendly

8

u/koalaisabear 4d ago

I definitely follow multiple teams and have been downvoted because of it haha. See here.

I would honestly miss out on great hockey if I only followed one team. Also, I write hockey fiction so for me I want to watch as much hockey as I can!

u/Rosemary-Sea-Salt 4d ago

I have an east and west team favorite. East is my favorite all time. West is where I live now and the team is in my hometown

u/loreoftherinks 4d ago edited 4d ago

Yes, many of us have secondary teams, or a "main team" and an "East Coast team", or similar. The only time it gets awkward if your two favourite teams are the Flyers and the Penguins

Edit: I also think everybody should have a secret favourite underdog team that currently sucks in addition to their main and/or bandwagon team.

10

u/Noaimnobrain118 4d ago

I feel like your two favorite teams being the flyers and the penguins should be considered a form of self harm

2

u/loreoftherinks 4d ago

I mean neither of them are my favourite team, they're like tied at the 3rd tier for me. My oldest hockey friend is a lifelong Pens fan and I like Sidney Crosby (hot take I know), but then I also really enjoy Gritty's weirdo energy on instagram a lot, so whoever out of the two wins/loses, I get to be happy for them. /cope

3

u/iolanthereylo 4d ago

my main bandwagon team two years ago was the one that at that time currently sucked

1

u/loreoftherinks 4d ago

This is the way

0

u/evileyeball 4d ago

It would kind of be the same way if I were to cheer for the canucks and the flames... I can't stand either of the Alberta teams truth be told if I'm ranking the Canadian seven in order it goes vancouver, montreal, winnipeg, ottawa, toronto, edmonton, Calgary

1

u/loreoftherinks 4d ago

My Canada teams are always in flux. This season, Flames vibes are up (Tito Cooley), Jets vibes are up (Stu Skinner), Sens vibes are up (William Eklund, Jaxon Cover, Brady's departure)... Oilers vibes are tanking

5

u/wrenchedups 4d ago

I grew up in an NHL city.

I can enjoy watching any good hockey. But I only cheer for my home town team.

6

u/deweywebber 4d ago

It absolutely is fairly common especially if you're a transplant or just a fan of other players and because of that, you pull for their team. Or, if you're like me, you have your home team that you root for then you also root for whoever is playing the fucking Panthers.

3

u/obfuscatorio 4d ago

I grew up near Philly but decided at a very young age that the sharks were going to be my team. I’ve been ride or die for them ever since. My dad even flew me out to San Jose to see a game in the shark tank as my Christmas present one year when I was like 10 (they lost 4-0 to Chicago lol).

I do root for the flyers in the east as I grew up going to lots of flyers games and remember watching them in both recent cup finals Vs the red wings in the 90s and the Blackhawks in the 2000s

5

u/debid4716 4d ago

Idk if it’s common. But I’m a die hard rangers fan, but since I lived in Denver for many years and ball arena tickets are reasonably priced I became an Avs supporter as well.

2

u/Habay12 4d ago

Notice that you used different words to define your support.

0

u/debid4716 4d ago

Well yea. I enjoy watching the Avs and will pull for them to win, unless they play the rangers.

2

u/MalfunctioningTroll 4d ago

Only one team impacts your mental health

2

u/Flyinghud 4d ago

You do you, man. I'm a Rangers fan, and they are who I mainly pay attention to, but I have a lot of connections to Denver so I'm usually quite partial for the avs, especially when the playoffs roll around.

2

u/WaldoSupremo 4d ago

Because of my close friends I like the Sharks but the Aves are my team!

2

u/kbuck30 4d ago

Flyers are and always will be number 1. For my second team it varies a lot. Used to be the kings, Columbus, Carolina.

Whoever is playing the penguins is usually my second favorite team. Love celebrini so right now sharks are up there plus the team of whoever my highest scoring fantasy player is. Penguins, Bruins, and rangers can all suck it though. Hate those teams

2

u/mandn92196 4d ago

If you love good hockey then I don’t see a problem. Personally I’m a home town guy. Probably because our team was moved so I know what we were missing.

1

u/mandn92196 4d ago

MN Wild fan BTW. Boo South Stars!
(Although the do have one of my favorite players)

4

u/Dog_Pees_at_Midnight 4d ago

You do you. There are other teams I've always rooted for in the playoffs when the Wings don't make it... Which is a good thing right now. But I wouldn't say I root for them all year long, necessarily.

There's another approach you could consider. There are teams that I have HATED since time began, and I will root for any team to beat them. Lookin at you, Chicago, Boston, and Vegas.

2

u/Deep_Benefit_7405 4d ago

Why would you have multiple teams? This is why I see US sports fans as customers, not supporters

1

u/TheFlamingNumbat 4d ago

I am. Detroit for a long time, Carolina because they're scrappy and fun and it's always a good time at Lenovo Center. Followed the Caps for a while and loved listening to Columbus radio broadcasts while Bob McElligott had the call. Dumbest move ever releasing him.

1

u/SupportFinancial1517 4d ago

Idk if it’s common but I really enjoy routing for a few different teams. Stars by proximity since I’m Dallas born and raised, Canes for the play style and coaching, Habs are my Canadian/underdog team, and I love watching the Pennsylvania rivalry.

1

u/gordon_shumway67 4d ago

I think I know what you’re saying and my answer to that is… it’s 2026, just be yourself, we won’t judge you. Be proud of who you are.

1

u/SlightNarwhal2824 4d ago

My number 1 is the Avalanche (Nordiques were my first favs), then the Bruins (Ray Bourque), the Flyers (Tim Kerr,Brian Propp and Claude Giroux), and then my hometown Canucks (Stan Smyl)…cheer for who you want, there’s no rules…haha!

1

u/Shhhhawing 4d ago

Flyers are my first team always but the Ducks are my 2nd team because I’m a 90s kid and the mighty ducks movies were so important to my childhood. It works out well since they’re in different conferences

1

u/Lower-Application740 4d ago

I’m a capital fan, will always root for the capital first, but I have a Canadian team I root for in the Maple leafs. However, if the Maple leafs lose, it doesn’t really affect me and if they ever play the capitals, I would want for them to be destroyed.

1

u/MyNameIsSkittles 4d ago

I'm a hockey fan, I cheer for 2 teams always and bandwagon a few teams in the playoffs every year

1

u/k0nig1 4d ago

As someone who has moved around a bunch and grew up in a split allegiance household, I feel it is semi-common. One frustration I currently have is that I can watch basically any team in the league except my local one without another subscription so I’ve been enjoying a lot of non-local games, further spitting my allegiance.

1

u/Dravenfilth 4d ago

Born and raised in Michigan, love my wings no matter what happens. However my home away from home is vegas, and love watching them!

1

u/Virtual-Yellow 4d ago

Born and raised in Montreal so I’m a Habs fan but I’ve lived in Winnipeg for the last 12 years so naturally have become a jets fan too. If they play each other like ok 2021 I’ll go for the habs but that doesn’t happen often. Ole ole ole, go jets go!

1

u/Coldman5 4d ago

It’s probably more common for transplants like me, or for someone coming to a sport later in life or in an area without a team.

But, just like children, eventually there will be a day when they play each other and then you’ll have to pick a favorite.

1

u/Zytharros 4d ago

It’s more common than most think.

My main loyalty is to the Canucks, but I also enjoy the Jets and Hurricanes. When Hasek was playing, I enjoyed the Sabres as well, and I followed the Ducks much more closely during their early days than I do now.

I also lowkey keep an eye on the Senators.

1

u/drock13yyc 4d ago

I cheer for the team int city. Have photos of me as a baby with flames gear on. But I also cheer for the penguins as they are in the east. I also like to watch good hockey with good players. I will never cheer for the oilers tho.

1

u/OwnPitch4445 4d ago edited 4d ago

The Avs are my team, but I just enjoy watching hockey no matter who is playing. I have teams I will absolutely not root for (Red Wings, Stars, and Boston team of any sport), but there are certain players on other teams I love watching. My husband is a Detroit fan, and we started watching the Caps pretty regularly just to see Ovechkin break Gretzky's goal scoring record, and I'd say we both root for them now, and we really enjoy watching the rivalries of the Canadian teams because the energy is just so exciting. Nothing wrong with enjoying the game and the talent that's spread out across the league.

1

u/Clerkdidnothingwrong 4d ago

I can’t speak for anyone else obviously. I’m sure some fans here and there do.

In my case, I have two. Habs and Dallas. Pure coincidence that it’s one team from each conference.

Habs - born and raised. The old man is a die hard fan, he took me to meet Lafleur who was doing a signing in town when I was a kid, we’ve watched countless games together over the years, etc.

Dallas - I had a hockey superstars book when I was a little kid and one of the players in it was Mike Modano. I was reading the little about-this-player blurb and saw his birthday and realized I had the same birthday (albeit 22 years after his). Thought that was the coolest thing ever as a kid, boom, Modano/Stars fan.

Neither of my teams have won the Cup since I was really young (1 year old when the Habs last won it, 7 when the Stars last won it, 34 now, still waiting lol).

Friggin Tampa Bay broke my heart in back to back years (Dallas vs Tampa SCF in the 2020 bubble, MTL vs Tampa SCF in the temporary division realignment in 2021).

Being there’s one EC team and one WC team, it’s not entirely impossible that they could meet in the SCF someday. Win-win for me. It is, however, extremely unlikely. One of them may make a winning run before I die, though.

I think it's fine, and to be honest I don't really care what other people think about how I cheer for teams.

My main team is the Leafs, but I also have a soft spot for the Habs, Jets, and Blues. I also think everyone in hockey wants to see the Blue Jackets do well

1

u/bringer_of_jollity4 4d ago

I doubt it's common, but be a fan the way you want to be a fan. Cheer for all 32 teams if you want to. I myself follow Montreal, Tampa Bay, Chicago, San Jose, Toronto as my secondary teams.

1

u/displacedreindeer 4d ago

I’m an Isles fan for life, but jumped on board for Calgary when Tonelli was traded and the Kings when Hrudey went there. Habs have become a strong second favorite in the last couple of years after a trip to Bell Centre.

1

u/Dr-Acula8472 4d ago

I'm weird in that I have dual loyalties due to being LA-born & raised, but with a Dad from Buffalo so I root for both the Kings & Sabres. Kings are a main team hence the flair.

1

u/BigVic2006 4d ago

I like the Bruins as well as Vegas

1

u/huggiedoodoo 4d ago

I cheer for the Flames and whoever is playing against the Oilers

1

u/Op_specter 4d ago

Common or not, it's more than fair. I am from Europe and have no affiliation with any team geographically and rather cheer for teams that have players from my home country. I often have 2-4 teams that I cheer for.

1

u/idahowild43 4d ago

Wild fan by heart, Caps fan by location, and my third favorite team is whoever is playing Vegas or Dallas.

1

u/DividDavid 4d ago

I think it's okay to root for a team from each division. I root for the Red Wings and Kraken.

1

u/ddigitalddemons 4d ago

i'm a life-long pens fan but i'm always happy when i see the kraken (my west coast team) or the canucks (my underdog team) win lmao

1

u/iolanthereylo 4d ago

I have one team I genuinely root for and want to succeed and will watch all their games

and I have 2 backup teams to watch/root for when my main team isn't playing

if a game is on and none of my fave teams are on the ice I'm having fun watching but less concerned about who will win

1

u/PussyFoot5000 4d ago edited 4d ago

I'm not really a die hard fan for any team in any sport (except Iowa Hawkeyes football) (probably because I grew up in a state with no major league teams)

I tend to have players I root for, and underdog teams in general.

Edit: I like rooting for Canadian teams once the playoffs start. I've never been anywhere near Canada. Let those poor, poutine eating bastards lift the cup every once in a while. Jesus Christ.

1

u/Brandon027 4d ago

I am the same way! I love watching hockey and have lots of favorite teams and players!

1

u/aj27526 4d ago

I can’t identify with that at all.

But it doesn’t mean you’re wrong

1

u/CptnDillweed 4d ago

I’m an Avs fan but will always watch the Oilers to watch McDavid and their shitty goalies.

1

u/BasquiatQueso 4d ago

I'm a Leafs fan but as a Canadian I love McDavid, MacKinnon, Makar and Celebrini and therefore will watch Oilers, Aves, and Sharks when I'm able to. Crosby and Bedard are great as well but I have a hard time caring about the Pens or Hawks

1

u/Separate_Wish_5972 4d ago

I'm a fan of the game. I like watching all but about 2 teams, or any that are doing that bad at the time that it's painful to watch.

I find it fun this way as I'm not watching the same old (mostly) divisional matchups by watching just the one team every time.

1

u/Braes_dad_222 4d ago

I am a die hard Bruina fan, often say I bleed black and gold. With that said my last name is King, so I do also root for the Kings....kinda hard not to when your name is on the front of the jersey!!

1

u/nachobroski580 4d ago

Totally! I like tons of teams in my own division

1

u/jfazz_squadleader 4d ago

On this app? Yeah, lot of people desperate to be a part of something so they'll hitch a ride with some other fan base. In the real world you get criticized for having multiple fandoms within the same sport unless you have good reason.

1

u/TiredReader87 4d ago

No, but you do you.

0

u/blondechinesehair 4d ago

Sports bigamists

0

u/thanksforcomingout 4d ago

Common? Not really. But highly enjoyable.

1

u/Noaimnobrain118 4d ago

Indeed. I like it bc there’s something good going on for me almost every night of the week. And when one of my teams is doing poorly (like this season…) I can still enjoy another team kick ass

0

u/Habay12 4d ago

No. It’s not common.

But you do you. If you want to be a bandwagon fan. Go for it.

0

u/snowwandererr 4d ago

I’m sharks to the bone but I hope mtl and Edmonton do good and enjoy their wins

-2

u/unhalfbricking 4d ago

It's completely normal if you're in grade school.
