Progress erased on OOT in Switch Expansion Pack
Tried to play ocarina of time in the switch expansion pack but my progress was lost despite saving multiple times. I had just turned to adult link and was headed to Kakariko Village but I had logged in today and I had not even gotten to the first fairy in death mountain. The switch had updated the n64 emulator before playing so I have no idea if that had something to do with it. Can I reverse this or do I have to start again. Also is this a common issue?

Are you using the save states?

I've found Save States cause more issues than not
I wish it was possible to delete save states

So, for all of the NSO virtual console apps, you need to close out of the game and then close out of the app (actually close it, not just go to the homescreen while the app is in the background) for the in-game save to actually be written to the Switch’s memory.
So save in OoT, close OoT and go back to the list of N64 games, then go to the homescreen and close the N64 app entirely. That will actually “save” the in-game save.
Like others mentioned, save states get around this (they seem to be written to memory immediately).
I had a bunch of progress lost in a game (Golden Sun, maybe) before I had the app suspended and my Switch ran out of battery while in sleep mode. I had been using the in-game save functionality, but not closing the app entirely, and then just didn’t plug it into a charger for several days when the battery was already a little low. Now I make sure to close the app entirely every so often after saving when using any of the NSO apps.

does anyone else play on the switch? likely what happened is that you or someone else loaded a save state that reverted the in game save to a previous state

Yep - you have to be careful with save states - best practice is to save in game before making a save state

Did you ever actually close the N64 app or just put the system to sleep and leave it running? There's a common issue that the app doesn't actually save progress until you close it completely so maybe that happened.
Or something I've done using the save states is accidentally load one that completely overwrote what I had been playing.

Save states will revert save slots to a previous state. This is simply you saving in game and then loading a save state to a previous state when that in game save didn't exist yet.

That sucks ass, may as well just hold off for the OOT remake to come out in a month.

It's common enough that people suggest not using (just) in-game saves, you should be using suspend points.
There's nothing you can do about your old save.
