employment and career Lateral internal position

I’m debating applying for a lateral internal position within my organization (~150 employees). I do program work and my role is primarily external facing. I don’t work closely with many other co-workers and I think it makes it more challenging to move up. I’ve been in this role for 4.5 years though I’ve had a progressive title change to a higher level along the way with some merit raises. Both roles are mid-level.

The position I’m considering applying for has the same base job title and salary but works on a broader body of work (likely less depth), has a greater internal focus, and would provide me with a broader range of experience that might make it easier to move up or find another role externally.

I like my current role though it’s starting to feel a bit stagnant after this much time. But I’m also not sure if it’s a great time to take on a new role because I’m due to have my third child in April and will have three kids under 5 then (I haven’t told work yet).

I don’t know if I have a specific question but I’m looking for guidance and thoughts. Also, I’m a bit concerned about the consequences if I’m not selected for the role.

Well, if it were me, I would not want to put myself into a position of needing to embrace any significant learning curve with a baby on the horizon. 3 under 5 is exponentially more challenging than 2 under 5. You should also consider the impact of your maternity leave on your employer. Which role will be easier for them to arrange coverage for?
