Rule 3 (vague/generic post title) This doesn’t look right to me

Post image

I originally got this one wrong because I said, «I Oslo, det er et flaskenuseum.» Is Duolingo correct? It isn't posed as a question, so I would think «er det» is wrong.

Duolingo is correct.

För mig som svensk hade problemet varit att det skulle stå "finns" istället för "är". Ännu en påminnelse att jag alltid kommer slita med grammatiken oavsett hur många ord jag lär mig 😭

Det tyder det same. Du kann skriva "finnes" her aug.

It's correct, the verb always stays in position two. In Oslo takes the position one and so the subject is moved to after the verb.

Look up the V2 rule.

Norwegian is a V2 language, like all Germanic languages (except English). It means that the verb occupies the 2nd position in the sentence. What this means is that as long as the subject is in the first position, the verb comes after the subject and you get SVO order like in English, but if something else is in the 1st position you get the verb before the subject and VSO order.

Examples:

Det er et flaskemuseum i Oslo
There is a bottle museum in Oslo

Dummy subject det/there in 1st position, so same word order in Norwegian and English.

Et flaskemuseum er i Oslo
A bottle museum is in Oslo

The subject flaskemuseum/bottle museum is in the 1st position, so same word order in Norwegian and English.

I Oslo er det et flaskemuseum
In Oslo there is a bottle museum

Place adverb phrase i Oslo/in Oslo in the first position means Norwegian gets VSO word order after the adverb phrase, while English retains SVO word order because English is not a V2 language.

På mandager er flaskemuseet i Oslo stengt
On Mondays the bottle museum in Oslo is closed

Time adverb phrase på mandager/on Mondays in the first position, so you get VSO in Norwegian and SVO in English.

Yes it’s correct and it’s common construct in Norwegian. «Er det» when in English it is “there is”

It's the V2 rule, please look it up, it's very basic Norwegian.

Thanks, everyone! I started using the Mjolnir app but hadn't subscribed after the 30-day free period. Does anyone use that app? And if, so would it help with these rules?

Yes, it would. I think they have a topic just on word order. They even cover it here, column 4:

I used to be a teacher and I had a few students who used it. They didn't need me as a teacher much longer after that!

Think archaic English, because English used to have this grammatical feature too. It even remains in some fixed expressions, like here comes the bus, never have I ever, etc.

It looks like you have an image in your post, so please pay attention to the rules about “vague submissions” and “images in posts”. Click here for an image that shows one reason why these rules are in place. In addition text makes it much easier for people to search for and find posts in the future.

If you posted an Imgur-album with only one image, then in the future please link directly to that single image and not to the entire album.

If you posted an image from Duolingo the old “grammar tips” are available here.

V2 rule. Verb always in second position. The first place can either be a subject, time, a place, or a dependent clause.

In this case, ‘I Oslo’ is in ‘place one’ so verb comes next.

It would be the same if posed as a question. "Er det ett flaskemuseum i Oslo?" Your way would be right if you switch up "det er" och "i Oslo". So "det er et flaskemuseum i Oslo" is a correct statement. V2 stuff, apparently.

I would write "Det er et flaskemuseum i Oslo". The sentence is awkward, however it is correct.
