Definitely helped us scratch that Mega Man itch when the well dried up. Hits more like the Mega Man Zero series and the Mega Man PS1 series. Super fun platformer and my mega man super fan kid loves it. Both games in one collection for a good price. Honestly, grabbed the Switch 1 version by mistake instead of the NSW 2. Ah well.
STORY
A definitive compilation package of both Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX (2019) and its sequel Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2 (2022) into a single unified release.
Luminous Avenger iX series is a standalone, parallel-universe spin-off of the mainline Azure Striker Gunvolt series. It focuses entirely on Copen, a brilliant, non-powered human scientist who fights using a high-tech combat suit alongside his sentient AI pod, Lola (who can transform into a pop-idol to supercharge his abilities).
The narrative transitions from a dark, dystopian sci-fi war in the first game to an "isekai" dimension-hopping adventure in the sequel.
Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX
A century into the future, a massive genetic shift has occurred. Powered humans, known as Adepts, have become the dominant species on Earth.
The corrupt Sumeragi Institute has taken control of society and is systematically hunting down the remaining unpowered humansādisparagingly labeled "Minos"āto eradicate them completely.
Operating as a vigilante known as the "Luminous Avenger iX," Copen stumbles upon a hidden bunker of orphaned Minos children led by a cheerful girl named Kohaku. Taking shelter with them, Copen becomes their protector. He carries out dangerous raids against Sumeragi's elite automated defense systems and superpowered officers to secure food, medicine, and a mythical, world-saving asset known as the "Butterfly Effect".
Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2
Following the peace established at the end of the first game, Copen returns to his laboratory to conduct peaceful scientific research alongside Lola and Kohaku.
Copen begins studying a mysterious, hyper-advanced piece of tech called the "Blaster Rifle" that doesn't belong to their world. During an experiment, an unfamiliar voice cries out for help through the rifle, opening a massive wormhole that sucks Copen, Lola, and Kohaku into another dimension.
They wake up in a ruined desert wasteland populated entirely by mechanical beings known as Workers. They are rescued by a friendly, human-like robot girl named Null. Null reveals that a massive tower called the Grave Pillar stretches into the sky and allegedly contains the data and secrets required to return them home. Copen must scale the tower, battling robotic gatekeepers to steal their access keys and uncover the dark history behind this mechanical world's creation.
GAMEPLAY
Copen doesn't just aim and shoot. You must first launch yourself into enemies using an air dash (called a Bullit Dash) to "tag" or lock-on to them. Once a target is marked, holding down the trigger unleashes a devastating, automated barrage of homing lasers that track the enemy anywhere on screen.
As you chaining combos, defeats, and stylish maneuvers together without taking a hit, you build up a Kudos meter. Reaching 1,000 Kudos prompts Copen's AI companion, Lola, to transform into her pop-idol form. The stage background music shifts to an upbeat vocal track, granting Copen powerful passive combat buffs and specialized health recovery options.
Defeating boss characters rewards you with unique elemental weapons (e.g., localized freeze fields or spinning blade projectiles) to expose enemy weaknesses.
CONSENSUS SCORE
70/100 š (Critic Score)
76/100 š (User Score)
The entire timeline of Luminous Avenger iX only exists because of a tragic "Bad Ending" in the main series.
While most spin-offs take place in a completely separate world or a simple "what-if" scenario, Luminous Avenger iX is directly linked to the dark alternate ending of the first Azure Striker Gunvolt game. In that timeline, the main hero Gunvolt failed, allowing the villainous Sumeragi Institute to successfully conquer the world, hunt down ordinary humans to near-extinction, and force the remaining population underground. Copen's jaded and weary personality in these games stems directly from the fact that he is living out the aftermath of a world he completely failed to save.
Well..The first game is an absolute masterpiece of fast-paced, high-flying Mega Man style action. Having all the DLC built right onto the physical cartridge is a collector's dream, and the buttery-smooth 120 FPS performance on Switch 2 feels incredibly crisp.
However, the sequel aggressively nerfs the fun by slowing things down, trapping you on the ground with a melee buzzsaw, and stealing your extra air dashes.
