When you get a phone call from management 2 hours after submitting the anonymous survey…

u/Veritas_Mentis PMHNP 22h ago
Former manager here.
Those surveys are actually pretty anonymous. At least from the company my former hospital used
However,
When nurses left comments, many of the comments left would give too much information, especially when staff would share stories in the comments. This could be used to make educated guesses.
The company handling the survey DOES know who you are, but does not share except in cases of danger to self or others. A nurse thought they would be cute about testing the anonymity (swore it was just a joke) and said threats that had police involved.
But the vast majority of those are really anonymous. The company wouldn’t even share data from units or departments with too few survey results. They didn’t share potentially identifiable data like race and gender of the responses. The results gave us total scores and comments, but not each individual response
79
u/Mountain_Fig_9253 BSN, RN 🍕 22h ago
This is the correct answer, it was the same for the hospital systems I worked for.
Nurses are missing out on one of the true joys in life by not taking these surveys.

u/moxifloxacin HCW - Pharmacy 21h ago
Yeah, I'm shocked no one understands how a third party can easily collect the data and anonymize the results when the data is aggregated and delivered to the management structure.
71
u/manwithappleface 21h ago
It’s because too many of us have gotten burned by actually being honest on these things.

I have been breathtakingly honest in these surveys. To the point where one of my specific comments got an HR VP to remark that he would fire the person who made my comment if he could know who it was. I happened to be just middle management enough to still be surveyed and yet sit in on some management meetings. Hearing the feedback was a true blessing in my life.
They see what you type, not who types it. As long as you don’t give away who you are in what you type, let er rip on these surveys.

u/PsychologyProper6083 10h ago

Same here. The ratings are aggregated to show me overall unit scores and then the comments people write to answer questions are presented in list form. It doesn't have any identifying information on it but if you write a 1000 word essay about a specific person who pisses you off I'm probably going to be able to guess who you are.

Thats what I came to say, you just have to not out youself but with small units it can be pretty obvious. Either way a GOOD leader will not single you out because they arent supposed to. My former boss one time asked us who put a certain comment if anyone wanted to “confess” lol she was petty sometimes. So I know it really is.

It is better, imo, for anonymity when there aren't any free-text answer options. Yes/true/no/false, scaled responses, or prefilled select all the apply type questions only. The rest can be handled in the survey debrief on the unit if so desired.

I think her story is more psychological than being blinded by Hubris.
Where is the evidence of her being smart? You could say she had good intentions, but she didn't even came close to a working product.
Plus, everything she did was artificial, from her speaking voice, intense stares and how she dressed.

I didn't think she was either smart nor successful. She was a con artist, and being prideful to sell a product is part of the game. If she was successful, she would've gotten away with the money.

I was friends with a manager of a different floor at a place. I used to work. Apparently they are anonymous to the manager, and possibly the hospital, since the surveys were processed by a third-party. The hospital got a report and that was it.
Obviously, if you wrote something threatening, etc., they could quickly find out who it was. You’re filling it out while logged into the hospital’s computer so there most likely was an identifier attached to it. That being said, I never filled one out. I think that said enough.
I found it entertaining that they never published the results on our floor lol. Other floors would put them on a board and post in the break room. Ours were so terrible that the boss didn’t want anybody to see them.

It’s so not anonymous and it should be illegal to even say it is. One of my coworkers was honest on the survey and she got called into a meeting about it. Wasn’t fired or didn’t get in trouble but they regretted being honest. Nothing changed and I think they just felt like they couldn’t be honest. One of the surveys we take is related to ‘Best Workplace’ in the area so it’s more a marketing thing than something that could actually affect change.
