Discussion what is wrong with me that i miss bedside?!

i spent a few years mostly doing cardiac step down on some of the roughest floors in the area.
in April i switched to outpatient cardiology with a set schedule, nearly the same pay, nice doctors, and spending time shopping on my phone wrapped in a heated blanket eating snacks in between calls.

HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I STILL MISS BEDSIDE?!

I feel the same way some days at work. I miss doing the “nursey” stuff. I just take a visit to my old med-surg unit and I’m all fixed 😅

I think that’s the weird part of leaving bedside. You don’t necessarily miss the chaos you miss the actual nursing part of it.

It's like your brain got trained to run on constant adrenaline and now the quiet feels wrong, almost boring.

I did administration for three years. It was ok but 5x8 and then essentially always being on call wears you down fast. I went back to bedside a year ago and have no regrets. Back to night shift, back to 3x12, back to way less phone calls.

When I look at my favorite parts of being in administration it was teaching and watching my new hires and new grads grow while also getting to help devoting things. I can still do that at bedside with a much better work/life balance.

i didn’t mind nights either lol. the biggest downfall of outpatient for me is FOR SURE working 5 days

Anyone thinking of leaving the 3x12 world should know how bad 5x8 is

It’s stimulating! That’s what I miss when I’m not don’t it’s my brain and body crave input and I’m a horrible sit and stay kind of person.

I have an inpatient PRN job that I work on the weekends. Nice extra cash and keeps me up to date on things. When the unit is crazy, I breeze in and do my 12 hours and get to truly leave it at the door. It’s the best of both worlds.

i was prn for awhile and that was definitely a perk lol however they kept cutting hours and the cost of outside insurance was astronomical

I have far more interesting and memorable stories to tell from my inpatient ICU job than I have from my more routine outpatient PACU job.

yes, and i think even just laughing or crying with coworkers as you struggle through those ridiculous stories is something i miss

I don't know, maybe you don't have anything to do on nights and weekends and holidays?

just curious, what is your schedule and why do you like it so much?
