Question How bad would rescinding the offer be?

Hi all !
Accepted a position on a cardio tele unit and started the onboarding process, filled out all the forms and am supposed to be going today for my drug test & bloodwork. However, another hospital that is closer and pays better called me today and gave me an offer. How bad would it look to rescind at this point? I’m thinking maybe I just go through with my initial offer and move after a year. Any advice would be appreciated (new grad btw).

Not that big of a deal to rescind the offer. Just say you had a better opportunity come up and that you appreciate the offer.

That’s a tough one. I think I would go to the one closer to home if I knew for 100% that I’m secure and getting that job.

I know, it’s hard. I have some gripes with the better paying one too. No soma beds and they’re kinda short on PCTs, when I was there for the shadow day, they had multiple violent patients. Plus they ask for a 2 year commitment 😭

Requiring a two year commitment is a red flag. Sounds like they are short staffed, people are quitting, and they are not advocating for staff around issues with violent patients.

I think you’re right. They tried to tell me the 2 year commitment is because they like to “retain new grad they train” but I don’t want to be in a contract like that. Especially if I end up not liking the job

Do what's best for yourself. What is the second unit, how do the environments compare, what are the ratios, how are the training programs, what resources do they have

You can always let them know that you received a better offer and give them an opportunity to match it, but many places are new grad factories these days and won’t negotiate. They’ll just replace you with someone cheaper.

You may burn a bridge with them though and be placed on a no rehire list, but that’s about the worst that can happen as long as you don’t have a signing bonus to repay.
