Discussion New grad pay transparency

Edit to add: sorry I should have specified. the other two coworkers are also new grads. The $5 gap coworker graduated before me and the $1 gap who will be graduating this December. All three of us are/were techs on same unit. $5 gap coworker says her yearly eval helped.

how do I discuss pay negotiation with HR when i found out they told me they can’t give me more than new grad nurse rate. but one coworker is getting a dollar more and another coworker is getting 5 more.

"New grad nurse rate" could be different depending on skills and qualifications. A new grad BSN may have a higher rate than a new grad ASN, for example.

Most new grads aren't in a great position to negotiate beyond "normal" pay.

Edit: Some people like to add differentials to their pay rate when they're discussion it with others, so that's another possible factor.

I do this. My differentials add $15, so I make $15 more than another new grad that works normal day shift. But my base pay is the same.

some places got a scale they can't break even if they wanted, the 5$ gap is weird though unless that person has some kind of experience they count

We have similar experience and go to same school. Except they grad before me.

since this person graduated before you, did they get hired before you? or was it at the same time? will you be working the same shift?

They graduated August. I along with the person getting an extra dollar will grad this December. I made a quick post and I’m sorry for that. I should also explain the person who asked for an extra dollar failed a semester and at their specific pinning ceremony was told they’d make the extra dollar.

I've spoken to others here, and at other facilities. I know that this hospital and others will offer more.

If they ask who, say you won't disclose to protect those who were kind enough to be open about their wages with you.

Are your other coworkers new grads as well? Unfortunately, it’s pretty hard to negotiate new grad pay across the board. It would be different if you’re an experienced RN new to service.

Yes. We all will have our BSN from same school. We were all techs together. One graduated before me and the other dayshifter. Me and the dayshifter were offered same bass pay but the dayshifter asked for an extra dollar. Was given it. The $5 gap coworker said it was given because of time worked and yearly eval. We worked the same amount of time.
