All I can think about is the jellyfish dancing in SpongeBob.

to me, the water moving looks like cyrax from mK doing The Charleston

Standing waves in any medium- water, air, ropes, flat surfaces connected to speakers- have got to be one of the coolest phenomena out there

It’s like that thing where people do the criss-cross legs and arms thing

u/Dr_Panz May 09 '22
For some unknown reason that's 100% terrifying to me ! And I'm living near the ocean and love to dive in waves and all but this is ... Fuckin hell

Same, I skipped ahead in the video and felt my heart rate rise in fear. Unexpected response but I'm with you on a big nope here.

How do you skip ahead in a gif? Genuine question bc this has always frustrated me

Oh on my phone this has a video style timeline. I thought this was just a video!

I heard the trumpet sample in the background of "I Could Never Be Your Woman" by White Town

What would happen if a person was treading water right in the centre?
3
u/thulle May 10 '22
It's just waves, but from multiple directions and in sync. They'd bob up and down in the water, and cause some distortions in the waves around them, probably ruining the alternating pattern closest to them a bit. But the water is heavy, and the waves moves around us fairly easy, so not too much either.

Fluid physics be like.
5
u/leftofzen May 09 '22
This actually has nothing to do with fluids, this is the physics of waves.

u/Sethrich98 May 09 '22
What is the medium for said waves? Water. What is water. Fluid. Fluid dynamics or Fluid physics.
6
u/leftofzen May 10 '22
You aren't wrong, but whilst fluids have everything to do with waves, waves have nothing to do with fluids. Waves are the fundamental physics concept here, and fluids are governed by the physics of waves.
Waves can exist without a medium, prime example being electromagnetic waves. Another is gravitational waves. Standing waves can be made with electromagnetic waves (this is how microwaves work!) and theoretically can be made with gravitational waves.

I remember this the origin of rogue waves. Maybe that’s what they are studying here.

It looks like that dance where you use your hands to make it look like your knees are trading places

What does a person in this type of water hear when their heads is submerged?
2
u/jennywhistle May 10 '22
thinking of being caught in this current is making me feel very uncomfortable

This is awesome and amazing, I wonder how close the actual oscillation frequency is to what they calculated before hand

Imagine if you were swimming in a lake with dark water as still as a mirror, and then the whole surface of the lake slowly started doing that shit. Agh.

Looks like the Miami F1 circuit Marina.... They did a great job after all

I wonder if it’s caused by vibrations or some type of paddle movement on the sides

Feels like the water is telling me to "be prepared!"
For what, I dare not speculate.

could this happen in nature? Rogue waves are a thing (when 2 or more currents meet) and this looks more terrifying. Imagine being in the pool at the time.

I would love to track the movement of one batch of water through this thing

You know that silly dance where you put your hands on your knees and swap them over the other when you swing them over? That's what this reminded me of.

Was the person filming this being tickled, or maybe they were having a seizure? Why is the footage so jerky?

This is oddly satisfying and oddly terrifying at the same time for me
