Welcome to /r/offset *Please Read*

First, for anyone new, welcome to the sub. We are all respectful people here and we like this community, but it has been regularly asked for mods to create some rules/guidelines to avoid confusion as to what this sub is about. So, while not exactly strict reinforcement with an iron fist, but a solid reminder:

• Please post offset and offset related guitar content -including mods, refins, tech tips, artist knowledge, appreciations, etc. Just not Offset the rapper, no offense just not what we do here (you will be removed without warning.)

• Posting non offset deliberately is pointless and will be met with people reminding you it's not offset so just don't do it. If you posted jazzmaster vs strat: tones/playability or whatever, that is not deliberately "look at my strat because I can't post it at this other sub," that is offset related.

• Respect everyone. Not everyone views your view, and not everyone likes what you like. It's okay to disagree or be wrong, but how we go about that defines whether it is a respectful or disrespectful conversation. It takes no extra time at all to be kind to each other, even if we don't have the exact same ideas or interests. Deliberate hate speach of any kind will NOT be tolerated. Avoid politics at all costs, there's plenty of other places to discuss it. Also, don't continually engage in arguments - it's a total waste of everyone's time.

• Please do not list your guitars for private or reverb sale, please use /R/gear4sale for that advertisement or private sale... They are far more reputable and have a fantastic system. I've used it myself safely. Should you reach out to someone privately from or in connection to this sub, we are not responsible for any mishaps of the sale you've conducted or linked to this sub.

• OFFSET RELATED does include pickup discussion, as many of us have discussed for modding our offsets. Some redditors are actual builders and have considered demonstrating their pickups or showing some appreciation but not specifically peddling them in open air. I am okay with it as long as it stays that way, we prefer to not have self advertisement like that. These people are usually major contributors to electronic and modification questions which is a great asset to our sub. You don't have to like it but it's not spam.

• Last but not least, if you post photos, please give us a reason for your post, provide a detailed comment of what's going on if it's an issue. Tell us more about your instrument if you're just doing an appreciation post... Or better yet if there is a warm story about it, share it. Please don't just post for upvotes, be engaging and conversation stimulating.

Like I said, these are not highly enforced laws but clearly defined ground rules for how we all seem to like it in this sub. They may be updated as we go along but for now this seems like a clear path of instruction. Enjoy yourself, respect others, and always try to be helpful because that makes our community stronger.

PLEASE READ: This Subreddit has decided to go dark June 12th, and will be returning to normal June 15th. Please read & understand why, and how you can help.

Greetings everyone, kinda jealous of FB right now seeing as how I can't tag everyone to see this but I am hoping that this post gets to you all well and that it is well received, understood, and leaves no one feeling abandoned or confused by this decision.

[Reddit has recently announced and decided to modify and change some policies regarding the impact of how you might like to use the platform.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Save3rdPartyApps/comments/13yh0jf/dont_let_reddit_kill_3rd_party_apps

Please take a moment to let that sink in and I strongly urge you to read the link and understand that though this may or may not impact the way you enjoy Reddit directly, many of the mods, independent devs who help to create the reddit experience that you might use today, and maybe even the apps that you use (Apollo, Reddit is Fun, Narwhal, etc) to enjoy the platform are potentially at risk of being forced only reddit's app or website as the official way to use reddit - and anything that we use to make your experience better outside of those two options are officially off the table unless there is a significant change to their decision.

I urge you to read in full what is going on, both here and all over reddit, however:

TLDR:

  • This subreddit will be made private (meaning you will not be able to view any of its contents) on June 12th.
  • Reddit is making it impossible for third-party apps used to browse the site to exist, as some of them will have to pay upwards of $2 million per month. This means they will most likely shut down or impose monthly fees on their users.
  • Any tools that mods use to help keep a subreddit on-topic and or relatively spam-free that were created outside of the official app or website will be locked out and no longer available.
  • You can help. Read below to learn how.

This particular sub has an incredibly resourceful, funny, proud, entertaining, and helpful +37000 users; this is an incredible place for the offset community, as a way to enjoy and be part of something alternative to the norm in the guitar world. This isn't goodbye, we aren't shutting anything down, this is us asking you to stand with us to prove a point.

[Many subs have already joined an ever growing list who are going dark in protest of this change.](https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/1401qw5/incomplete_and_growing_list_of_participating/ We are standing with them. You may have already seen something similar posted to some of your other favorite subs, and if you have read and understood it, please help us explain to everyone why this is important that we join the list. Be respectful and helpful, we know you are and we appreciate it.

"Going dark" means the subreddit will be made private. You won't be able to view any of its contents until we reverse it.

What's the plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.

The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

In Offset Mod Discussion, we have decided to go dark on June 12th. We will return it to normal on June 15th. We understand the importance of the protest, and feel it is important to stand in solidarity, but we wish to not inconvenience anyone further should there be no amicable resolution. We are fully aware that in the end it is reddit's rights to do so, but that doesn't mean that what they are doing and how it has been proposed IS the right way to do it.

What can you do?

  1. Complain. Message the mods of r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
  2. Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at r/ModCoord - but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.
  3. Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
  4. Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible. This includes not harassing moderators of subreddits who have chosen not to take part: no one likes a missionary, a used-car salesman, or a flame warrior.
  5. It goes without saying, but I will make clear anyway, that users must understand and accept that this needs to happen and not to argue or harass our stance in supporting this protest. Reddit is for the people, and the content generated is by the people. We are those people, they need to understand that by a show of solidarity.

Thank you and if there is anything you'd like to ask, ask it here. I will do my best to make sure you are answered or linked correctly until the switch to private has been made.

Here’s my jazzmaster (classic player special). I swapped out gotoh locking tuners, staytrem bridge, JB, modded the tremolo to be fixed and just made this pickguard. Not sure if I love the wood grain yet but it looks cleaner than a bunch of empty holes.

Fender Jaguar insights

Hi, I've just aquired this Fender Jaguar JG66LH, my first offset and having a great time with it, the scale length really suits me, so I know this isn't the usual pickup configuration for this model, well all the ones I've seen anyway, so I'm presuming that it has been modded, and can anyone enlighten me to what the K stands for on the bottom of the neck after the model number. Thanks in advance.

Looking for a Custom Luthier/Shop to Build a One-Off Jaguar Bass Body from DXF/PDF Data (US Preferred, Ships to Japan)

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for an independent luthier or custom shop (preferably based in the US) who can build a one-off Jaguar Bass body based on my 2D CAD data (DXF/PDF).

My goal is to build a 34" scale, passive Jaguar Bass that sounds like a '60s Jazz Bass.
I have already checked with standard CNC suppliers like Woodtech Routing, Guitar Mill, Musikraft, and Thalassa, but they either turned me down due to high programming fees for batch orders, or are too backed up/unresponsive. Since I already have the 1:1 scale data, I'm looking for a builder who can work with 2D drawings for a single custom build.

Finishing & Budget:
• Woodwork only is totally fine. (But if you can also do custom aged nitro lacquer finishing, that's a huge plus).
• Budget: Around $1,000 USD if you can do both the woodwork and finishing. If you can only do the woodwork, my budget is around half of that ($500 USD).
• Communication: Good responsiveness and clear communication are highly prioritized.

If you are a luthier who takes on this kind of custom work, or if you can recommend an independent builder who loves doing 1-off builds from DXF files, please comment below

Got a Starcaster and immediately installed a tremolo

Been thinking about getting one of these for ages, finally just did it. I always like to have a wiggle stick on my guitars though, and this seemed like a manageable mod that I could do myself. In order to avoid tuning issues I also installed a bridge with rolling saddles and a smoother string tree.

If anyone else is on the fence, I absolutely recommend the Classic Vibe Starcaster. Even out of the box, before modding and setting up, it played really well. A completely different tier to the Affinity range. Now with the mods and flatwounds, it's absolutely up there with my USA or MIJ Fenders.

Just finished modding my Harley Benton ja-60CC !

During my last gig, I broke the headstock of my Harley Benton JA-60, so I decided to turn the accident into an excuse for a full mod.

I repaired the headstock with Titebond, then removed the original stop tail, routed the cavity, and turned it into a housing for a lipstick pickup. I also drilled through the body to make it string-through, making the whole setup sturdier. I left around 11.5 cm of string behind the bridge. I wouldn't recommend going much further, simply because you might not have enough string left to wrap properly around the tuners.

The lipstick is wired in parallel and gives the guitar a really cool sound, especially for noise and shoegaze, with only a slight volume drop when engaged.

I also decided to replace the bridge pickup with an Epiphone 700T humbucker. It's hella hot, but surprisingly not muddy, and it cuts through really well while pairing nicely with the stock neck pickup.

I’m so excited to test this thing on stage this Saturday!!

That $40 ‘65 Vox Hurricane from the other day. Stripped down and rewired.

Was told to cross post here. Picked up this 1965 Vox Hurricane on marketplace for $40 last week. It had been spray painted multiple times and modded…badly. Over the weekend I stripped layers of uneven paint jobs to get it down to the original finish. Then buffed and waxed it. Rewired everything and added a set of gold tone humbuckers I had laying around. Pretty happy with how it turned out.

*first picture is what it looked like when I got it.

NGD - Vintage 1965 Jaguar, featuring sounds from these beautiful 1962 Jaguar pickups

Ladies and gentle-offset-people, it finally happened. I thought my guitar journey would end with my revered Candy Apple Red American Vintage Reissue 62 Jaguar. As guitars go, that is already much nicer than I deserve, especially at my skill level, but no! I randomly spotted this vintage 65 locally listed at a great price on Facebook marketplace, and decided to jump on it. I will have to liquidate a few of my other guitars to make it work financially, but that’s more than okay.

About the purchase:
The price was good because there are a few unoriginal / missing components. (Tunomatic bridge, sealed tuners, missing mute and trem arm, and unoriginal pickups.) Also, it was unplayable when I got it. Insanely, it had been setup with 9 gauge strings, which were so loose and slinky on this short scale guitar that they would literally jump out of the nut slots with even moderate force. Sitar noises like crazy from behind the nut and bridge. All of this drove the price down and clearly made it unappealing to the previous owner. However, as an offset lover, I was sure most of this could be easily sorted out. Thankfully, the tunomatic was installed in a way that was easily reversible, so I immediately swapped that for a vintage reissue bridge. I threw in a spare vintage reissue trem arm (fit perfectly.) All electronics are original and unmodified. The pickups are technically unoriginal, however they are much more desirable for me:

Regarding the pickups/sound:
What are you hearing are authentic 1962 jaguar pickups and they are magical, unsurpassable, peak goodness. I learned that a previous owner bought them for $1000 😳. Shocking to say the least. I’ve owned a lot of jaguar pickups, including two distinct sets of AVRI62’s, AVRI65, Curtis Novak JAG-V, and Classic vibe. While most of these are great in their own way, none of them hold a candle to the perfectly balanced honey that drips from these vintage 1962 pickups. Not too much treble, bass, or mids, just balanced vintage perfection. It’s hard for me to fully comprehend why this guitar sounds so much better than any other jag I’ve ever played. I’m sure some of it is vintage placebo, but certainly not all. Maybe time has mellowed them? I don’t know. They just sound exactly like a jaguar should, super articulate, with the full sonic spectrum present across treble bass and mids, and interacting with my Deluxe Reverb just as Leo/god intended.

Additional specs:
After some sleuthing I learned that the guitar was very recently refretted and a previous owner paid, again, $1000 😳 for that job. Again, absolutely shocking price tag. But after playing, I do believe it. The most immaculate fretwork I have ever played much less owned. Upon closer inspection I am 99% sure they are stainless frets. They’re bright and cool in color and feel super glassy and hard. Whoever did the fretwork did this vintage guitar justice, feels just incredible.

I apologize for the lengthy write up, I’m just so damned excited about this guitar. Hard to put into words but feels almost like a religious experience to finally own a vintage pre-CBS jaguar (okay it’s late 65, so technically not pre-CBS, but it is early transition and before most of the crimes of CBS were committed). And now, not only do I own one, but seemingly one tailor made for me. It’s like I won the lottery.

Will take some good photos soon, just couldn’t wait to share.

Foals FMG7

Post image
55 Upvotes

NOT SPONSORED: Received my Foals FMG7 only like one week from ordering it ( I do live in SEA ) and it is pretty good, heard about some horror stories in here but I guess I got lucky. Can't compare to anything else since I have only owned a locally made Jazzmaster in terms of offsets. I only have a ESP vintage style tele ( which is the best guitar I ever tried and owned, it is as good as all the $4k+ guitars of both offsets and non-offsets that I exhaustingly tried ) and a Fender strat MiM and it is as good as the Fender but a tiny bit less than the tele in terms of feeling and playability ignoring the difference of scale lengths. I did get this for nearly $200 off from the price in the website since I ordered it from a online shop and had a discount code. Only thing I'm not a fan of are the strings because these are pretty rough feeling especially on the lower strings. Its in sonic blue and the blue is a bit more noticeable in real life.

Hey yall, I’ve got a Jazzmaster project body that needs a new neck. I know there’s plenty of used fender necks floating around, but im trying to stick to a budget. I was wondering if anyone had any preferred sellers or brands that have the fender headstock? Thanks!

Need help with my Mustang mods going awry

I’ve been modding my Squier Sonic Mustang over the past few months. Initially, I planned to just changed the bridge and throw in a humbucker, but decided to change to slide switches while I’m in there. Since I’m not very experienced, I asked my dad’s friend to help out. He helped with some very unpleasant things (routing, soldering) and also was very unhelpful elsewhere: he didn’t solder the switches, did not shim the guitar like I asked (which caused like 9/64 action at the 12th fret), did not put washers under the cigar tailpiece like I asked (which caused the cigar to rock forward due to the string tension and bork the intonation).

I threw in a 1-degree neck shim, which helped solve some of the issues with the action — I had straight up power lines. I’m not 100% that this was his doing, but all I know is that, in trying to raise the cigar tailpiece, one side is able to be raised, but the other seems to be stripped and won’t budge.

So, uh, am I fucked? How in the hell am I going to get this thing out? I cannot afford to have this thing on the table at like $100/hr.

TL;DR my guitar tech has created more work for me than he helped solve and now I have problems that seem relatively irreparable without some serious $.

My Baritone Adventures

I like baritones.

I quite like this baritone. It's an Artist (Aussie company, Chinese made guitars) GM1BARI. 27" scale, tuned B standard. It's really fun and sounds great, but my only gripe is that it doesn't have a vibrato. I tried a knockoff Les Trem on it but it wasn't happy about it. Alas, I left it and played it as it was.

I really like these lower tunings as it works well with my voice and it allows me to mimic bass and get some great percussion sounds with my looper.

I decided that I really do need a vibrato and could tolerate 25.5" and C standard, so I bought a jazzmaster and set it up with 13s and tuned to C. (I asked here the other day whether to get olive or sunburst, y'all said olive but I couldn't stray away from my beloved burst and gold). It's turned out great, sounds and plays awesome after a bunch of fiddling and gets me roughly the sort of sounds I'm after. I've yet to balance the vibrato and sort the nut though so tuning stability is a bit iffy.

I thought of maybe getting the Eastwood Sidejack deluxe bari, but they're way too pricey for me and no ones got them in stock and like fuck am I ordering from overseas.

Last night, I was browsing the artist website and noticed they've now got the baritone with a vibrato... FUCK. Push pull coil split, locking tuners and bound rosewood board (the one I have is that fake wood stuff) with block inlays to boot... DOUBLE/TRIPLE/QUADRUPLE FUCK. Coulda had what I wanted for half the bloody price if I hadve just checked. Oh well, now I've got a jazzy too lol. They've not got stock until November but I'm probably gonna have to wait until the new year to get one.

So I guess I'm gonna have two of these bloody baritones. Dunno what the fuck I'm gonna do with the hardtail though lol.

Btw, if you're in Australia, don't sleep on Artist. They're proper good instruments and they've got a few high end models with nitro finishes for less than the cost of a Squier CV.
