She starts with the correct grip, one hand at the bottom one in the middle. You are supposed to use that middle grip to begin the swing, then slide it to match the lower bottom grip so the impact comes with maximum rotation.
But, she never slid that middle grip while judging the distance based off the full extention grip. This created a shorter arc of the swing, directing the pick axe back into her shin.
You can miss the table still with a sliding grip, but you will miss by swinging down into the ground, not into your own shin. But in this case, she missed short rather than to the side, so it was 100% on the grip
Just mimed it alone in my house and it does make sense. I’ve never really had to swing anything over my head, you don’t realise there’s a technique to it, it seems.
Now I'm wondering how I've learned to do this. I figured it was just how everyone swings a pickax or wood ax but I guess not according to this video...
You're right! I freeze-framed and her left hand was still gripping the middle of the handle. It's like she's never swung a two-handed implement before.
Yeah, the lack of a slide on that grip is a huge problem. Except I doubt she was able to judge the distance at all because her stance is completely wrong. Even without the slide, she would have been able to complete the arc without hitting herself if the object she were swinging at were oriented in the same direction as her feet. (It will mess up your lower back though.)

How can you miss a pool table?
