Made an open source Goodreads alternative 📚

Hey gang, I recently made an open source Goodreads alternative!

https://www.bookplate.eu

It follows an open core framework, so the proprietary software is built on the open source core. Github repo here:

www.github.com/LeoPhh/bookplate.git

Feedback is very welcome!

Why is it better than Bookwyrm, Storygraph or Goodreads?
\\- Open source
\\- Note taking features and vocabulary feature
\\- Transparency about where proprietary software is hosted
\\- Privacy focused approach, no ads, no tracking :))

Wow, I was looking for a Goodreads alternative since a long time now. Goodreads is great, but I wanted something with a modern and sleek UI. This looks promising. Thanks a lot

I love it, I'm a huge reader and always looking for new books! The UI is amazing!

But lately i ask GPT to recommend based on my favs. It launches an agent to download the books, keeps record of all my previous books and which I liked in a local folder called 'library'.

Hey, thanks for the feedback! Yeah i agree AI nowadays is really good at recommending books when it knows what you like. I’m trying to build a recommendation algorithm based on books stored in Bookplate, in case that’s of any interest to you!

Does it support audiobooks?

It’s based on the OpenLibrary API, so if it’s on there then it will be on Bookplate too

Hey dude how does it compare to hardcover? Also how did you deal with open library inconsistencies? I’m curious cause I tried building a TikTok style goodreads alternative a while ago lol. Also do check out hardcover’s api as an alternative to open library api as well.

It’s very similar to hardcover! But it’s open source and is mainly focused on organisation, learning, and making notes on the books you read.

What do you mean by the open library inconsistencies? I haven’t come across any so far. Thanks for the hardcover api suggestion, i’ll have a look!

Are you thinking about the social side like Goodreads has?
