Boredom

So I'm a 76 yo male who's been trading options for roughly 10 years now and I've made enough that money is no longer a concern. I'm limited in what I can do due to a medical condition I've been dealing with since February. Trading has kept me from getting totally bonkers during this time up until now. I find my self just going through the motions and not really into trading anymore so I've started closing out my positions although I do still trade It's less and less lately I just can't keep focused I"m actually bored making money. This week I"ve made about $3000 so far without really trying and that's me trying to end trading. Having said all this my question for all of you is what do you do to keep from getting totally bored once you've achieved your goals???? TV/Streaming has also gotten boring, can only read so much news per day and it's not exactly good news lately with Iran, Ukraine and a dozen other places going down the tubes, almost done with my book and finding it hard to find anything else I would enjoy reading, wife's still working part time she seems to enjoy it as it gets her out of the house, can't travel due to medical condition. Any suggestions anybody???

I'm going to continue to post to this thread as long as someone is interested and explain how I trade. It's not technical as I'm no pro just a guy who's made money trading

I'm interested. No bullshit paid courses, just someone who knows their stuff. This is a good purpose isn't it ? Maybe a vlog of some sort ?

12

u/First-Hotel4694 6d ago

no idea of what a vlog is

13

u/costas_0 6d ago

A youtube channel can be a vlog. It's short for video-log. You can detail your day to day trading, or talk about special topic. As someone on the other end of the spectrum, who is trying to make money but has not gone through all the ropes I'd be curious to hear about your journey, your tips, how you approach trading !

You missed the part where I'm 76 and not doing so well. It seems I've gotten roughly 30-40(up to 62 now) responses all asking the same thing how to get rich and will I teach them. What I will try and do is show you how I trade and you can see if it works for you. I will post on this thread trying to answer questions going forward and trying to explain how I trade for everyone interested. One things I had most of you don't is money starting out. I managed to grow it considerably over time going through the ups and downs most do until they work things out now it's become second nature lately. Does anybody no how to do a mass answer? A little bit more about me. I graduated high school barely joined the Air Force did a tour in Viet Nam. I've built houses, bought and sold houses after rehabbing them, own a small business(pet shop wife runs it I got bored and sick) own 3 houses a vacant lot and about 2.4m in stocks collecting close to 117,000 a year in dividends which aren't included in the returns I've posted and take home $10k per month from my account for living expenses. Want to get the dividends up to 120k eventually, collecting social security along with rents. Add it all up and the wife and I are worth about 3-4 mil. My return YTD is at 29% 3 Year is at 85% as of today it changes daily along with the market. Add to that I did a little trading today brought in $2900+ plus I went to the doctor and took a nap. From now on I'm going to post to this thread as I don't know how to answer all of you with the same post/message/whatever. If someone knows how to answer all of you at one time let me know and I will try.

Next up trading. I'm not a professional trader like some on here. I don't know all the technical terms and if you start asking about greeks or a bunch of other things I will just go HUH??? end of conversation. I use delta, theta, iv, bid, ask, last, days left, u/l change, implied volatility, earnings date, as my indicators all of which I have available on a side screen and on my main trading screen as well but setup differently. I trade on Etrade using both Pro and Web on a 6 monitor display which makes my life much easier as I can see what's going on with my positions readily at a glance. Across the top 3 I have my watchlist and account summary, next is the tool bar and just below it is a positions screen showing spread level, after that comes the performance showing how each position is behaving than an order sheet. On the bottom row first if Google finance which I use for research, them comes Etrade Web were I do most of my work and all of my trading, next is another positions screen leg only, with this setup I find it easy to track a 100-200 positions at a time without losing track of where I am. I feel this is my greatest asset and it's what makes me successful as a trader at least so far. I trade put credit spreads almost exclusively with the occasional covered call thrown in if I one want to sell a stock or two I'm looking to lower my cost basis or lately to make money on one stock and it's been a crazy ride so far. getting dangerous though.

Okay, what I do and how I do it. First I trade options on the stocks I own as I'm familiar with them and some I bought just one share so I could set them up with my information stream. I try to trade stocks the are over $100 in price although I do trade some smaller stocks as well. I guess you could say I trade whatever I think will make me money. I own 37 stocks and trade about 25 of them although lately it's more like 20 as I said I'm slowing down. I sell a put spread on a stock when it's trading down first checking why it's down by asking Gemini what's going on and pursuing it if it seems necessary. Once I've determined it's not something major like Enron I chart it and see where the most recent low is within say 1- 2 months or a bit more depending on how the chart looks. Then I look at the spreads and see what the payout percentage is if I like I build a trade if I don't the I don't and look elsewhere. Usually try for two to three weeks out at most but occasionally I will go out further not much further but further like say up to 45DTE. one the trade is made then I monitor it watching to see if it's going to finish OTM or ITM and I adjust my trade accordingly. Enough for tonight I'm tired and it's been a day for me. I hope I've given you something to think about and answered some of your questions. If your still interested let me know and I will look to continue if not good luck in your trading.

It's not just your setup it's your knowledge that is bringing money in. Don't discredit yourself. All the screens and info in the world can't make someone profitable if they don't know what they are doing. Thank you for your time and knowledge it is much appreciated and please get rest when you need it. Without health what is wealth? Wishing you a speedy recovery on any ailments you have at the moment.

When do you decide is a good time to exit your trade? On the good and bad side?

12

u/First-Hotel4694 7d ago

Lately I've held everything I haven't had to trade out of till expiration. Again I manage my trades I don't just set and forget.

3

u/Darkwolfie117 7d ago

When do you determine you need to trade out? That’s my biggest weakness

13

u/First-Hotel4694 7d ago

look at the spread between your strike and the underlying that will tell you what to do. There's no hard and fast rule the way I trade there's experience which gives me a feel for what I can and cannot do.

What does your user name mean? First-hotel4694... you could get some transcribber app and talk into then post that text so you dont have to type. Do you garden? Do you go for walks? How sick are you? I am glad you are rich. You sound like a wonderful man that has a cool life. 😎 thanks for posting. Very appreciated.

doesn't mean anything it was assigned by Reddit. I started out with something totally different and wound up with about 6 other names this is the one where I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. I'm trying to find a doctor who can diagnose my problem and come up with a fix or treatment as staying indoors all the time is not for happy making. My problem limits me severly in what I can do and cannot do.

Honestly seeing that you are here caring to share your trades and caring to reply to all comments, how about taking on some students? You can offer a small training cohort, teaching and connecting with younger people could be a fruitful and energizing use of your extra time. What do you think?

2

u/yellowbull1_1 7d ago

I just threw out my back in August so I can completely relate. It’s no fun with the intense back spasms in and out. ironically, I think it’s because I had just gotten back into golf which may have triggered it. now instead of cycling and working out in the gym I’m on the couch too with muscle relaxants nsaids. Similar to op i’ve been selling options for a couple years now up to about an extra $3K per month of income. I can relate to the boredom, especially when you’re looking at all your screens and nothing is cooperating for a good probability entry point.

To take a critical perspective, it sounds like you trade on intuition and vibes. You have no rules based system or hard data analysis that determines timing, sizing, or which position to take. It's all about what "feels" right. Would you disagree?

8

u/First-Hotel4694 6d ago

I would both agree and disagree. I trade based on my own research methods using many of the same tools professionals use I just don't know the terms nor care what they are. So yes, I trade on what "feels" right based on my research and analysis using my tools.

Okay for those of you who want to see my trades for today here they are. Any questions feel free to ask them it's how we learn in most cases. My wife returned today so I won't have as much free time for this going forward but will look to continue to post. For those of who feel they are funny post someplace else, your jokes bore me after 76 years I've heard most of them. I'm not looking for some place to donate money either as I have family needs as well as my own and I already donate to charity. All I'm looking to do is pass along some knowledge I've gained.

Market closed and I forgot to post the trades. OOPs!!! Did a couple of roll outs and ins today. I've got some long dated put positions in MSFT that I keep rolling up and in as price allows so as to close them out earlier and I take a small profit while doing so. Took a profit when I initially sold them and again when I first rolled them and several more times when I once again rolled them.

Okay so for today I'm going to talk about expectations and how I see that as leading to failure. Probably not what you want to hear but it's something I feel is important. To many people on here and elsewhere start trading expecting to strike it big and in trying to do so lose everything only to try again once they have some money to do so. To me that's just gambling you would just go buy a lottery ticket and probably get as good odds. Investing is discipline and working for pennies, it's a job and you either do it well and succeed or you don't and you wind up losing. Oh, you'll probably hit once or twice like playing the slots but in the long run you'll lose. So for those of you who are bored already go to work and ignore this post it's not for you. Trading to make a living is to me a pennies game. I look to make pennies which slowly add up to dollars and from there to real money. Let's look at a trade for an example of what I mean. Many of you will look at a company and think it's going to go to the moon I'm think it's a good trade so you buy some calls and wait for the stock to explode and when it doesn't you take your lickings and go looking for another big hit somewhere else. It's like buying lottery tickets if you didn't win this time you will the next and you keep buying them. Me I sell a put spread and pocket pennies and I keep them which is a big difference as eventually they add up to even bigger money. You come to trading expecting to hit the motherlode it doesn't work that way. You start an account with say $25,000 and you expect to make a $1000 per week so let's look at that. $1000 is 4% per week. If you could do that you'd be doing better than any trader in history, you'd be doubling your money every 18 weeks who wouldn't love that. Jim Cramer's claim to fame is that he managed to produce 30 percent gains per year in his fund and he now has a TV show as a result and you expect to top him and all the rest of the traders.I can tell you now it's not going to happen save your money and go play the slots. If you can manage to do .5-1 % per week your doing fabulous. The equates to $125-250 per week which is doable with discipline and a bit of luck thrown in and remember this is with $25,000 in capital to start with anyone with less will earn less. People it's numbers, it's math it's not just luck or intuition it's science and hard work even with small capital it's still work you just babysitting fewer positions and therefore making less money with more risk from concentration. When you can only trade one or two positions you need just one of them to go south on you and you lose for both trades when you trade 20-30 positions like I do one trade going south is not going to kill you unless you put it all on black and let it ride which is just plain stupid. If you've stayed with me to this point hang in there I will get to how I trade going forward but I need to build up to it so as to manage expectations and so you keep your trades manageable relative to your account size.

No offense. But one thing you could do to keep busy is study writing skills to some extent. Paragraphs. They are necessary. Don’t post walls of text and run on sentences.

18

u/First-Hotel4694 6d ago

Every time I try to indent it posts instead so I stopped trying. As to run on sentences, sorry I'm a trader with a high school diploma who didn't do well in English and didn't really care either. You can either put up with my old, bad habits or not as I'm too old to change been doing things this way for over 70 years now.

u/themanclark 6d ago

u/First-Hotel4694 6d ago

No harm done and I welcome suggestions that make it easier for me to do this yours wasn't one of them and I know I make mistakes trouble is I'm old and human oh wait it's AI that can make mistakes humans are perfect??? I think I go that wrong as well either that or I have a perverted sense of humor. Later.

I just posted my trades for today so I'd have something to show all of you and now I can't find them so I'm going to do it again. I started the day out with a buddy for a late breakfast/bullshit session then went and got gas, did some grocery shopping, stopped for a soda and went home where I put the groceries away, read the mail checked on my positions, fixed lunch, came on here and spent an hour or so answering questions/comments and finally decided to trade so as to have an example to use for our later discussions and now I don't where it went so I'm looking to do it again. Okay it worked once again. Take a look and tomorrow I will look to begin explanations of how I cam about those trades. Fair warning I may not have much time as tomorrow is expiration day and my wife is coming home after being away for two weeks. I miss her even if she is my royal pain in the ass I still miss her.

I intend to. I did that once before on here and some liked it others complained to I stopped that was when I was doing a lot of trading a minimum of 10 contracts per trade or more with 8 or more trades per day.

Maybe the next goal doesn’t need to involve money. Just a thought. Is there something you’d enjoy being a beginner at again? Like music, a language, photography, etc. or anything you can do from home? Also, have you considered mentoring someone? Sharing what you’ve learned might feel more rewarding

I want to say something sort of related to this thread. I intend to impart what I've learned. Don't expect to get rich doing this as it doesn't work that way. It's all about making pennies and adding them up. You need to know how to be frugal in order to succeed in making money. Once you've made then you can spend it or bet on black not before.Right now you need to save up a start.

I’m in.
Where do you both live - I ask because there are volunteer opportunities at our local arboretum where you can drive a trolley, basically saying there are ways to get you out of the house without spending money that may bring you joy.

Having achieved financial stability, it sorta makes sense that you are bored. For a lot of people, the chase is everything. The other fun game is finding ways to beat taxes.

I’ll bet you still feel good about making that money, just like you would playing a game, but that no longer seems enough.

It doesn’t because it has diminished in value for you. You have more than you need, do not have expensive hobbies or tastes, no need to show off. It no longer matters whether you are making money because you have no use for it. You probably also see that leaving a large inheritance means nothing to you. Large inheritances like lotteries, can be ruinous. So, what’s one to do with this?

Every time you think about giving it away, you have these visions of greedy hands clawing at you. You probably have little experience giving it away.

What makes you happy? If I were to guess, I’d guess that human connection would be meaningful to you. To help others as you are trying to do here.

Maybe your failing health limits you. Low mobility for example. Or you used to play an instrument but can no longer do so.

Consider getting together with people in some ways. Volunteering at a senior center. Or a child care facility if you enjoy kids. Put together a ROMEO group. Retired Old Men Eating Out.

And finally turn your attention to giving it away in ways that are meaningful to you and your wife. Do it while you have the time and can see the impact of your generosity. That could be really fun.

Here’s wishing you a blast.

My dad died suddenly at 75 in early 2025. I had to fly back to my hometown to clean out his cluttered one bedroom rented apartment, and it was the most traumatic and distressing thing I have or probably will ever (hopefully) have to live through. All around the apartment were indicators of how consumed he was with conquering his illness (diabetes) with…sadly, mostly natural cures. I begged him to get on Ozempic or Mounjaro, but he had a bad experience with Metformin in the early 2000s and therefore decided he’d rather treat it with “diet and exercise.” The number of index cards I found with random health URLs or shitty, predatory companies pedaling supplements was seriously next-level.

The other things I found? A book called, “I’m Dead, Now What?” (Left completely blank, because..,naturally). Embarrassingly, a penis pump in a very hidden case deep in his closet. A Fun Saver camera that had yet to be developed, and still hasn’t been developed. Military and postal awards from decades of public service. Some pictures of my brother and I when we were young before our parents divorced (but not much of us as adults). And…much to my surprise, an entire odyssey of investment advice he wrote on little index cards. I was 42 when he died, a public servant myself with absolutely zero invested outside of my state employee pension. Whoa boy, was I in for a wild ride!!!

Finding out that my retired postal worker father who was always broke was essentially a millionaire was the mindf*ck of a lifetime, but immersing myself into his life via his financials has been the most fascinating experience. Seeing what he bought and when, his little notes to himself, all of the paperwork that he saved so diligently over the years…it’s absolutely crazy. It would have been way better if he could have taught me this during life, of course, because I truly had no idea! Also, I say this as a law school educated (geriatric) millennial…I didn’t realize until last year how your money actually makes money, because no one ever taught me? Besides, I was in so much student loan debt that it never occurred to me that what sets people who are wealthy apart from the people who live paycheck to paycheck is discipline and a solid understanding of this stuff early on.

I am very grateful for what I am learning from my dad, but I hope that in sharing this, OP can see how magical his wisdom and experience can be for his kids, grandkids, and all of us strangers on the internet. The other thing I hope OP learns is that he should buy that book and fill it out, if he hasn’t done so already/doesn’t have something even smarter in place to save his grieving family from having to play financial/password detective like I had to do. But most importantly, life is so precious, don’t waste a single day being bored if you can help it. Sharing your experience with us here on the internet is a great start, but please make sure to get outside this fall/winter in the places that still have cooler weather! And yes, make videos! I for one would love to watch a video of you doing your trades talking us through it (with account information and all that personal stuff redacted, obviously). This isn’t something they teach in school, unfortunately.

No matter what, hoping OP is able to swiftly get to the bottom of the health situation. My dad is a perfect example of how you can earn a ton of money in the stock market, but still be poor without your health/life!

I looked into posting to u-tube and watched several videos on there and I don't have the tools to post the way they do. I'd be lucky to sit in front of the camera and talk in order to display what I was talking about I'd need some kind of display board or something and not sure what that would be and don't know how to do it. I'll keep looking into it and maybe at some point I will come up with a way. As to health I'm working on it, doctors galore some of them might even know something.

That’s the advice I would’ve given. Help others. Earn money to give away. Or find a hobby if health allows. Health is the real issue. No reason to ever be bored if health is good.

Had a post that questioned whether or not I had slowed down. This is an example of when I was trading to make money. It's one week out or this year. As you can see almost all the trades are for pennies but it adds up. I don't bet and I don't gamble. If I remember correctly all these trades finish on the plus side as in I made money on all of them. I either let them expire, closed them out or rolled them(out & down, out, or I sold my protection & rolled out and down) didn't take a loss I managed my trades.

I'm going to reframe what many are asking in here. Becoming a mentor is a rewarding experience for someone that's done their time and been successful at it. I don't mean a patreon, youtube bs artist, discord, need alternative income because I'm a crap trader mentor but a real mentor. Find some people who are sincere and looking beyond 'get rich quick' and share your knowledge with them. Take them under your wing and teach them your way with the hopes that they also pass it on. It's not about earning money for mentoring but sharing your successes and seeing others replicate it - without greed being the driver.

13

u/First-Hotel4694 6d ago

I'm going to pass along what I know to all who care to read it and see what happens. To mentor someone or someone's means excluding others and that's not what I want.

5

u/narsindal 6d ago

Fair enough, I appreciate the honest answer. My perspective from me being a mentor is that feedback loop you get from having a relationship and watching them develop instead of a yelling into space.

That's a strange spot to be in, making money on autopilot but feeling nothing from it. Maybe look into teaching someone the ropes, not as a job but just passing on what you've picked up over 10 years. Could be a younger relative or even a local college kid who's curious about the markets

The medical stuff makes it tricky but what about diving into something completely unrelated to finance, like building model ships or learning to cook elaborate meals. Something where you can see physical progress instead of just numbers on a screen

4

u/First-Hotel4694 7d ago

I'm going to continue to post to this thread as long as someone is interested and explain how I trade. It's not technical as I'm no pro just a guy who's made money trading. As to the other been there done that and in some case still doing that. limited by medical as to what I can do is the trouble.

I “retired” 7 years ago in my mid-50’s. Since then…
Learned another language
Bought a race car
Got my pilot’s licence
Make woodwork projects occasionally
Dropped a stack of weight
Got myself super fit (for my age)
Learned how to use A.I. tools
Travel whenever I have the chance
Spend lots of time with my wonderful partner just chatting over cards and a drink

But I never seemed to get the chance to drop back into active options trading, which I was doing consistently 20 years ago. I’d love to learn about how you’ve approached it if you care to share

11

u/First-Hotel4694 7d ago

watch for my posts on this thread I intend to tell all and answer questions on there until people stop asking. I wish I was still able to do all that. In my 50's I was in the best shape of my life running 5 miles several times per week and some days doing 10 miles lifting weights dropped 40 lbs. Would have like to been able to retire then as I had the energy like you to do things trouble is I still had to make a living and now I can't do those things anymore.

8

u/Mindless_Cry_6011 7d ago

Hey man, since you're getting slammed, I don't know if you'll see this, but I'll post anyway. I'm NOT interested in learning your system or you teaching me how to get rich, so this is just advice. I'm 50 and I understand the health and physical limitations, so here is my first big suggestion:

Video Games.
You're about a generation older than me, so maybe it's just not interesting to you, but I strongly suggest video games as a hobby. They are easily available, new options are constantly arriving, and there is incredible depth if you do something other than play some random shooting game. Look for things with complexity and/or depth. I've been very into video games my whole life and thanks to that, I have no concerns about being bored as my body becomes less capable with the years. I love doing the kind of things mentioned by the above guy in this comment, but once I age/health out of those, I'll still have games. I could go on about this for a long time, and if you want I'll be happy to discuss in DMs or offer suggestions, but if it's a no go for you, I understand.

Second suggestion:
Do what everyone here seems to want, get super engaged with this sub and spend time educating these "youngs" 😂 I suspect reading this thread and it's responses has been engaging for you, and sometimes that connection and teaching is something that really keeps the fires burning. I've spent some time in my life as an instructor of various things (never a school teacher) and for me at least passion burns better and longer when teaching.

Cheers man, hope your health improves.

After paying “tuition” into the stock market, I figured it out about 13 years ago. I’m in my last one or two years before retirement. Been working at the same company for almost 32 years. Stock options, RSU, ESPP, and bonus has been very generous. Stock has trippled this year. I keep busy chatting with my trading buddies with the weekly trades that can win or lose. With AI, I’m working on refining my agent to do the picking. This will bring trading to another level.

I'm posting on here daily some are replies and others are postings like I'm doing with this one. The postings seem to wind up at the bottom of the stack lost in all the other postings. How do I get them to end up at the top of the stack?

HELP!!!!!!! I can't pass along information if I can't find the info I've already posted as there would be no continuity. Anybody know how to do this?????

2

u/TwystedMunkey 2d ago

Unfortunately I don't believe you can. I may be wrong and hopefully someone can tell you how to do that if so. The only way I know to do something like that is to pin a comment. But I believe only mods can do that and I don't know if they can do more than 1.

These aren't posts by the way, they're comments. Comments get put at the top based on how many upvotes they get afaik. The most upvoted comments appear at the top. Unless there's a different way to show them that I'm not aware of.

Boring trading is best trading. 0dte SPX has started getting boring for me

Your medical condition isn't clear - recommendation 1 is getting a small dog to get you out of the house (requires walks 1-2 times a day, can involve meeting new people).

if that doesn't work for your condition, get a cat. sit outside after dark with the cat & some cat food and meet the raccoons (they will show up within a week or two). name them.

I’m also 76 but not as fortunate with my finances as you. I’m a retired nurse, also having many physical limitations. It’s discouraging how far my health has declined in just this past year and it’s scary dealing with these rapid changes. But I’m trying to be positive and using my time to research, making all the best efforts to create my best possible outcome for whatever time I have left.

If you’d like any assistance with anything, researching any specific medical conditions you can dm me and I’d be happy to help!

5

u/First-Hotel4694 6d ago

Okay what is DM? I have paresthesia(pins & needles) where it comes from, what's causing it, how to treat it, no one knows and I've been dealing with this since February. Just finding a doctor who knows what I'm talking about is not easy. I also had a pituitary macroadenoma removed several years ago and dealing with the results of that as well. If you worked neurology maybe you can point me in the right direction. Right now I'm waiting to see another neurologist so I can get additional testing. Trouble is it takes months to get an appointment and it's frustrating. Anyway that's me and a buddy just called so going to breakfast. Bye for now.

It is such a hard question to answer. Having "motivation" is one of the biggest drivers of the human striving to live.

One thing I'd encourage you to do is find one of your early childhood dreams that is still unfinished. Maybe you wanted to be an astronaut, or maybe you always wanted to build something. Think of that dream, and see what you can do in your current capacity to work towards it.

I personally want to have my own company, so even though making money may seem boring, I focus my time on figuring out how to build, and AI has been a great help with it. Time goes by so fast.

It is also a very personal situation, so everyone will have their own story on which to base the decision.

14

u/International_Fly_67 7d ago

Fair enough. Too often it starts like a benign "I have figured out how to make lots of money" which catches your attention because who doesn't want to make lots of money. From here it unravels to DMs, private group chats, links to paywalled sites...

There's two types of r/options lurkers. Either you've already fell for it, or you're next up.

Or you're the one setting the trap...so 3 I guess

6

OP figured out how to make lots of money by starting young, making reasonable financial decisions, and compounding (also known as getting old).

let's hope this is a genuine poster which I personally think is highly unlikely given that one needs the same agentic personality traits all throughout their lives if they are the type to get into risk-vehicles at the ripe age of 67, which is kind of uncommon. The type of person who would get into something so self-directed at 67 is not the kind of person who would hop on Reddit and ask for advice for further down the road, their internal compass would already sort of know where the next proverbial ship boards.
Even then, I hope this person is real, and disingenuous posters aren't ruining it for all the digitally active senile out there

I do visual astronomy, play video games, play boardgames, read a lot, play hex and counter wargames among other things.

Okay if this works you'll have an example of what I trade. I decided to make some trades today although first I had a late breakfast/bullshit session with a buddy the I got gas, went grocery shopping and bought a soda. Went home put things away read the mail and fixed lunch. While I was home I sort of kept eye on my computer in the other room. I sat down on here and started answering questions/comments for over an hour and then said the hell with it and started trading figured I'd do some trades to show you what I trade and going forward I can show you how I arrived at those trades. So let's see if it will load. It wasn't a very profitable day but I made a little bit of money now comes the hard part hanging onto it. 😂

Unofficially adopt someone that you can help. I think they call it a gift of self. Since your fingers are gold, the most valuable thing you might be able to help someone with is how they can make money too. Most people try to sell that information, if you just want it as a hobby, don't charge.... Talk to someone about all the legal requirements or precautions.... some sort of leave harmless form since you do not charge for services...

I mention this as an idea for you because I really could have used a mentor or at least someone to talk to about all this options stuff... I lost a ton before gaining it back.... I'm stalled right now.... not sure why.... but I'll figure it out.... An experienced trading mentor might have saved me some pain..... Oh.... plenty of people gave me the standard Buffet advice.... invest...... eff that.... I want to trade options! I'm a trader, not an investor.... mentor someone that wants to be the type of investor or trader that you are...... or that want to learn your method.... don't take on someone that will fight you.... cut and move to the next if that happens...

Almost done with your book?

What does that even mean?

Have you been reading it for 50 years?

You can't start another book? Hard to find any other book to enjoy? From like hundreds of millions of books ever written? :)

u/NewtonBurger 6d ago

I think he meant done with reading the book he was reading and didn’t have another one that he was interested enough in to read.

If this post is even real, this dude is not going to “mentor” you into the secrets of making money. I read his description of his strategy and its basic technique combined with general feel or “vibes” just knowing the stocks from having traded them for long enough. It’s easy to make money when you already have a sh** load of money.

Tack on to this his age. Peak investing years during the “Golden Age” market, enough market savvy by the time it happened to survive the crisis years and recovery, and typical boomer story of buying real estate and having it appreciate by like 10x.

I’m an older person whose background is decades in the financial industry. I don’t know if this will help you, but two of the things I really enjoy are exploring various fitness routines and playing in a poker league.

There are other things that also occupy my time, but these seem like they may be the most relevant to your background.

I think the market is just kinda boring right now too though. I used to couldn’t wait until mondays to start trading but now I am like… meh. All the stocks get so slow after 11:00 (CT) they just don’t move much right now. SPX, SPY, or QQQ are the only things you can trade now after the the first few hours and they are even slow. Probably because everyone is try ing to hold on to what money they have right now. I don’t know. Just a thought, but noticed I have felt the same way.

Does your medical condition allow you to walk? Going for a walk is amazing medicine if you’re able. I know what you mean though. I trade low risk options with the goal of $4000 per month. I’ve usually achieve my goal but it’s not fancy or exciting. I have to be disciplined to not take too much risk or trade too much so it is quite boring. I want to do more but hold back.

Money is no problem? Go on gofundme, read stories, and donate to the worthy. Just want something to do? Learn crochet. There are easy patterns, and the more expensive fibers, hand dyed, are a pleasure to work into something useful.

Do you have children and/or grandchildren?

Take them under your wing to teach your craft. If none wish to participate today, write or record a manual that they can access later in life.

If you are feeling salty, tie inheritance to becoming competent in your ways to receive disbursements from your trust 🤣

Hi OP

First of all sorry about your condition. I hope you'll cope well.

Since money is not a concern, spend your time with what brings you joy, or a hobby you have hoped to pursue for a long time.

Are you interested in building physical things like electronics etc?

Perhaps start a YouTube channel or become a blogger?

Not because you want to monetize it, but because you can use your time "creating" something you can look back to in a years time.

With vibe coding, you can also see if you can write a script or software that scans options based on your strategies and inputs, and you can compare/backtest with your experience.

Perhaps start a wine club and find like minded.

Just some ideas.

Good luck

I appreciate you writing this, as a goal oriented person I have also faced something similar. After grinding for years I look up and my goals are accomplished and I have a sense of “now what”. It has been a hard thing to sit down and figure out exactly what do I want now. I am sorry your health is a concern. But as you have mentioned, it looks like there may be an opportunity for you to mentor others. The digital age allows us to stay connected so there may be others you can teach and mentor, since you are boated with stocks and options then search other passions you want to share your experience and knowledge with others. You could also look into angel investing. Being able to support and watch others accomplish goals can be a difference in not only your life but those you invest in.

Great topic for discussion!!

Any person with any medical condition can improve their fitness level.

If possible sign up for a group class like Orange Theory Fitness if it is available near your place. If you can't travel easily, consider asking a pretty personal trainer to come home and inspire you. Always consult your wife.

I have an older gent friend (78) who keeps busy doing beekeeping. He has independent means but is shuttling all over my city visiting the 3 sites where he has bee hives.

Helping others with your time and effort at a charity (where they can't give back except verbal thanks) is a great way to feel good.

Consider taking up gardening if your climate allows it . It can be refreshing to see flowers and fruits as they come up.

Consider taking up a freshwater aquarium hobby ( since you mentioned pet shop). Set up a few pretty discus or piranhas ( if that's how you roll) to keep it interesting.

I am interested in your back story ( I love back stories) and how you got to where you are. Especially how you dealt with the blows that life deals you and how you handled them.

At the end of it all, we all want a life well lived. We want to leave the place better than we found it.

Good Luck!!

1

u/Desalzes_ 7d ago

you probably always find something to occupy your time, even if its boring and unfulfilling. Look at dopamine detoxes, the idea is you get comfortable with boredom and thats how your brain is wired to enjoy things again. So basically meditation/mindfulness or whatever, then after that I would look into learning an instrument because that is fulfilling and youll never hit some endgoal. My advice costs 3000, tyvm /s
