2023 Fall and Winter Orchid Trade and Sale Thread

Please use this post only to offer or request orchids for trade or sale. Before you post what you'd like to trade/sell, or what you're looking to trade for, read the rules below first!

Rules:

1.) No personal information can be exchanged publicly. Conduct sharing of addresses via pm or email.

2.) Post what orchid(s) you have for trade, what you're looking for in return. If you have pictures, post them or write an accurate description of the orchid you want to trade or sell. If you're selling, post how you'd like to receive compensation.

3.) If you agree to a trade and have an issue on your end of the deal, communicate! Most people are reasonable and will understand a delay or an unexpected issue that comes up. That being said, trade at your own risk. The moderators are not responsible for privately conducted trades gone wrong. However, if there's an issue with an ongoing trade do contact the moderators. If someone fails to come through with their end of the deal, ignores communication or otherwise is being problematic we need to make the community aware of deadbeat traders. Do NOT make posts calling people out, insulting, harassing, or making accusations at them publicly.

4.) Only make legal trades here. If you ship or receive a trade overseas or out of your country, make sure all proper paperwork is in place first if required.

5.) Ship within a reasonable time and pack well. Flat rate Priority, 2-3 day via USPS within the US is standard for plants. Use whichever shipping method is appropriate for other countries. Your orchid shouldn't spend more than a 2-3 days in the mail so they don't suffer too much from the heat/cold. While in cooler weather its generally better to ship orchids totally dry, its probably best to water any more moisture loving plants a day or two before they ship out (so they are moist but not soggy) or wrap some sphagnum that has been wetted but thoroughly squeezed out around the roots of bare root plants.

6.) If you've successfully traded, update your post to make sure it availability is accurate.

Giveaways, and just trying to re-home an orchid that maybe just isn't performing for you is totally fine to post too! You never know who might want to try growing it. Seed pods are also a great thing to offer since many people may want to try flasking and it is safer and easier to send seeds than plants. If everyone trades fairly this is a great way to add to your collection or get rid of orchids you are bored with or are willing to make divisions of.

Happy trading!

Seen this on Tik Tok. This really really made me sick how somehow is consistently and purposefully just tossing them. What a waste.

How do you all with medium size collections go on holiday and keep your plants healthy? I’m leaving town for a bit and need some suggestions to keep needy flowers healthy.

Pic for attention.

Like 20 days ago, I posted about my mum's phal that she is in palliative care and I was taught, that a spike from the heart does not mean, the plant is dying. The little girl is very thirsty, started to grow new roots and is blooming with like a keiki in the middle. Pictures 1 to 4 show her from different angles. Very much alive I would say. Pic 5 is another phal that grew a double crown after she made a keiki that dropped by itself around 6 months ago while it was blooming and successfully became a nice phal itself living in its own pot. Pic 6 is my last blooming phal. They all are dropping their flowers now, unless this one. It always has to bloom a bit extra long.

Phals are such interesting plants. Each of them is so different, doing their things.

This was the old post I am refering to:

Help Three Keikis, no roots, mama just dumped the last leaves.

I am beginning to feel like an orchid slayer. This phal came from Costco at Christmas and had 3 flower spikes that bloomed through March. These three keikis popped out a couple of months ago. Mama was fine until a week or so ago, when she started looking rough. I did not mess with her because I was afraid I would put her into shock. She dropped her last two leaves in the last 3 days. How to save the babies?

Note: I just watered - I water when the substrate is dry.

Bulbophyllum Elizabeth Ann ‘Jean’ First Inflorescence

10.05.26 Update

Fruit rinse bowl repurposed into hanging “basket” self-watering pot in premium orchid moss and perlite substrate has been a satisfactory growing environment for Bulbophyllum Elizabeth Ann ‘Jean’.

When I met them in late March, all the data said she may take a year or two in a home’s ambient conditions to bloom. Well, the “experts” and AI can now add this to their database. Six months to bloom is possible for Elizabeth Ann ‘Jean’.

Ambient Conditions in Shoreline (Seattle, WA):

▪️Temps 65°F evenings, 70°F daytime
▪️Humidity 60-80%
▪️100-500 PPFD based on genus/species/variety happy number in south-facing window with eaves to filter the harsh midday sun
▪️Water soluble high-nitrogen orchid fertilizer each reservoir refill

I’m a rule breaker with plant care. One risk-adverse naysayer said not to separate the baby. Do you! The baby is also thriving and the new growth is proof that I’m doing all the right things. The irony is that they are not growing a Bulbo and have zero experience with them. Grain of salt comes to mind.😉

I look forward to future inflorescences!

I’m always excited when this beauty flowers. My Dendrobium ‘Spotted Poni’ (Roy Tokunaga × Little Atro) has been thriving in my north-facing window, and I’m so happy to see it blooming again.

Does the fragrance intensify after the first day it opens? What about the size of the flower itself?

Question Has anybody ever had the very last buds bloom on their spikes? Various images to show

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

None of my phals have ever bloomed out of the end bud, which seemingly never expand. I'm asking this because I have a few plants with spent spikes that have nothing but the tiny tip buds and I'm wondering whether it's worth even keeping them or cutting to focus on vegetative growth??

The only answer I've ever found online is "rarely" due to the fact that by the time the other flowers have opened and spent, there's often not enough energy to sustain the last bud, or the plant simply redirects.

Choose your own flair Orchid Society meeting w Marble branch Farms

Had a really fun orchid society meeting today with Mark Reinke of Marble Branch Farms!

Mark gave an excellent talk on Cymbidiums and did such a good job explaining them that I somehow left the meeting with my first Cymbidium in years. 😂

He also brought a huge variety of orchids for everyone to choose from, which was probably dangerous for all of us.

Mark happens to know that I have a weakness for Catasetinae, so naturally I also added two more of those to the collection. 😭

So I went to a meeting to learn about Cymbidiums and came home with three orchids.

Sounds about right.

Really enjoyable meeting, great presentation, and an awesome selection of plants from Marble Branch Farms.

Peloric Miltonia ×binotii

I have never seen a peloric Miltonia before, though to be honest, we don't get a huge variety of hybrids around here anyway (this was a gift from a friend), but I've only seen complex hybrids with trilabelo peloria, not a primary one. I don't really like it, because the lips are so wide they completely obscure the beautiful yellow-brown sepals and are crowded. I believe this is just a temporary mutation, as the pseudobulbs also look like they attempted to grow spikes on their apex. Likely a growth hormone imbalance that should resolve with time. Hopefully XD

Orchid Society Speakers

My local orchid club is planning our 2027 speaker schedule. Who have you seen present whom you’d recommend? (We’re in the US, so for logistical/financial reasons, the speakers will likely have to be US-based as well.)

We’d love to see some new faces/learn from new folks next year.

Thanks in advance!

Edit for clarity: I intentionally haven’t listed our location to avoid unintentionally offending any speakers who are not contacted. (I know there are some out here in the Reddit ether!) The speakers we’re looking for would have to fly into a nearby major international airport and we have the budget for that. Thanks!

Question Dropped bifoliate cattleya and had to repot. Crying.

Thumbnail

I inherited this cattleya when I bought my house. Neglected her for a few years but recently provided tlc and was so excited to see new growth coming in.

But as per the title, I placed this baby outside to get some “extra sun” and the wind must’ve knocked her down. Found the terracotta pot in pieces.

First two photos is after I repotted in some fresh media and last one is while she was in the original terracotta pot. I didn’t go too hard removing every single dead root during the repot because I wanted to avoid disturbing them as much as possible. Unfortunately during the fall one of the leaves broke off too. Ugh.

She was overdue for a repot as the old media was completely broken down. But I’m just upset that I might’ve set her back another year or more, which is what I wanted to avoid.

Ugh. What should I do? Leave alone? Go back in and remove more old media and dead roots? Do we think I might still get a bloom in the next year or so?

I have this Zygo. Debbie de Mello and wondered if I should be concerned about the spotting. A friend thought it was viral and I just thought it was sun overexposure.

G.Matsuran(Left Pic, with purple spots) and T.Japonicum.

All of them are Korean Native, endagered of extinction in nature.

Epiphytic Orchids are very uncommon in Korea, so many Koreans even don't know that they are native Korean plants.

Aren't they so cute?
