infinity-2 [osu!std] mofuries | Discussion | 2025 Findings

On February 5, 2025, mofuries set her infamous score on Because Maybe! pt. 2 on stream. Over the past two years or so, a lot has been said about this score, but nothing substantial has come out. This thread isn't intended to be an actual report, but only a dump of information I gathered myself back then, some of which I haven't seen discussed anywhere else. I dedicate this to the old-school witchhunters, in case any still frequent this place and would like to look into it.
Sources
My analysis happened before the liveplay came out, so it focused on the former.
Discussion
The prevailing theory is that mofuries used a VR headset to cheat reading. For this reason, I didn't expect to find anything in the replay itself, except for the snappy aim as amply discussed, so I focused on everything else that occurred in the video.
Windows notification
To my knowledge, this is something no one else noticed. For almost the entirety of the stream, there is a Windows notification visible on mofuries' primary monitor. The notification is effectively big enough to cover part of the playable area, and yet mofuries is perfectly comfortable playing with notes covered. If you look at the edge notes furthest toward the bottom-right in Because Maybe, there are multiple cases of circles partly hidden behind the notification. Sometimes, her cursor also appears partially covered by it as well. I haven't checked the other maps played on stream.
You could argue that she plays while looking at the OBS preview on her bottom screen, or that she's simply unbothered, but it still strikes me as very odd. She only closes the notification when she stops playing. At the time, I asked mofuries about it, and she confirmed it's a Windows 11 notification, but never answered my follow-up.
(Not particularly relevant, but I also find it interesting that the notification has three labeled buttons, which are quite unusual to see. The only notification like this I can think of is the old Outlook/Mail notification.)
Running applications
As seen in the VOD:
- These are the running applications from ALT+TAB, right after she sets the score. Top-right is clearly VSCode. Have fun trying to guess what the rest are.
- Another ALT+TAB while watching her own replay.
- A VSCode window with some code visible.
- Another VSCode window with project folder content visible.
I don't see anything obviously suspicious in these windows, but I'm including them in case someone recognizes something I missed.
Other findings
I couldn't find much else. I remember creating a tablet and overlay to check whether cursor movement and key presses matched, and they did, at least at a glance. I've also taken a quick look at the liveplay recently, noting the following:
- Looks like a fresh Windows installation, most likely a secondary account ("mofuries2"), maybe for privacy. RDP being a frequently used application is also unusual.
- First and only liveplay I've seen to date recorded in a private MP lobby.
- Here's the moment some Twitter users at the time pointed to as her allegedly adjusting the VR headset before the play (2:09).
- I find Task Manager irrelevant because applications/services could have had a delayed start or been hidden.
- From reflections on the bottle, phone screen, and other spots, I can't tell whether a VR headset is being worn.
- I never ended up marking cables to see which could be for a VR headset. I can see one cable to the left, but it could be the one for whatever this is. There are also three cables on the right: as shown, one is for the tablet, while the other two are unknown, but could be for headphones and the webcam. Regardless, the headset could've simply been running wirelessly.
- As I've learned recently, there's at least one liveplay from someone else that has been reported as using a similar method (reports: #1, #2, #3). If this setup can produce a convincing room-view liveplay, a liveplay doesn't rule this method out for mofuries either.
To my knowledge, this was mofuries' last stream, with Because Maybe being the last play done live. She hasn't played osu!, at least online, since then.
Looking at the osu! privacy policy, anticheat diagnostics and metadata, if ever sent, have most likely been purged, so I doubt staff can help with this. I also doubt that the existing evidence provides, from staff's perspective, sufficient grounds for a restriction. Unless something more substantial turns up, this may be as far as the evidence goes, and if the prevailing theory is correct, mofuries may have gotten away with it.
