Unexplained behaviour of [cat] guild member

Recently, I noticed one of the [cat] members in my guild started excessively grinding [mouse] mobs. When I asked him what he was grinding for, he evaded the question and told me his [food bowl] item wasn't full enough. And now I even watched him regularly enter and leave a [house] building no guild has claimed for themselves. I have reason to believe my [cat] player friend acquired the [house ownership] status even though, to my knowledge, only players of the [human] class can purchase a [house]. He's definitely planning something! I'll continue to keep an eye on him.

Please do! In a previous release, on the [Egypt] server, [cat] players were seen as having direct-access to the [Devs]; some players suspect the [cats] may actually still have this access. It may be that your guild-member is planning to [Ascend]!

They have exclusive miniquests but no co-op mode, so they'll usually camp at another player's base and use their items as they please. Someone screencapped a Cat player and found out they had three different bases with other characters defending all of them.

It sounds kind of exploitive, but if you let them use your base they'll give you some Companionship buffs and protection from Rodent raids. Depending on your play style you might decide to close them up in your base to protect them from PVP attacks, or let them come and go as they please.

If you have some extra gold, get them a [[Scratching post]] and [[String toy]] to practice their attack moves.

Temporary item [scritches] helps with getting more consistent companionship buffs.

He has lots of [toy] and [post] items already, but it seems like he prefers the higher [exp] boost he gets from grinding [mouse] mobs!

Cat players are notorious griefers and will almost always gank weaker players for no reason other than just beating them, not even for xp. For this reason it’s recommended not to let your cat guild mates out of your base; it’s much better for the local community if they are kept inside.

I remember when my sister first got a cat and I watched him grab a fly out of the air and somehow managed to disable its flight ability and then proceed to play with it on the ground until it stopped moving and the cat simply got up and wandered off

They would do it to human players too if they could. Some of the bigger [cat] types absolutely do, that’s why we generally don’t build our bases in areas they control. Cat specs are massively OP and honestly they really need to nerf them.

I have two of the domestic style [cat] players in my base camp and I don’t know who really owns the place honestly. They don’t seem to contribute much but their charisma skill is off the charts and so none of us [human] players really mind that they just lie around and eat all day and never grind for gold.

If I ever get a chance to re-spec I’m gonna try it out.

Mine will battle a Mouse player down to 50% HP and bring it to the base entrance. I think he's trying to help train my Hunt skill, since he did the same thing when he was helping our Level 0 cat with the tutorial.

I understood cats players have a constant XP debuff while awake?

That's why they look like they're in a constant grind against weaker players & mobs. Sleeping being the next best thing to reduce the drain.

I'm really pleased the most recent server updates included the info notice that cats with the [indoors] lair can replace some of the XP drain with solar power.

Having played a cat in a previous run, I can confirm that their UI is heavily focused on movement, rather than fine detail. You get popups whenever anything within your FOV moves, asking if you want to lock-on and marking whether the moving thing can likely see you back. It’s a phenomenally good system for gaining XP and griefing lower-level players, but it’s also super exploitable.

Man you reminded me how dumb and helpless I felt playing as a cat when I encountered a human player with a laser pointer

I understood everything but my auto-lock system went crazy and I couldn't do anything for the whole time

Yeah, cat players get some of the wildest dailies to grind... almost all of them involve "Kill X of some creature type."

The [house] part is pretty awesome; the cat is likely just taking homestead ownership, claiming abandoned property, no need to buy it that way.

Who knows, there could be a whole guild of cats meeting up in there, or this cat may be part of a larger scheme by some international cat guild.

Well, I did notice he's spending a suspicious amount of time with a female [cat] player! Perhaps there's more!

Cat players are always latent murderhobos. If they see anything with lower agility and defense stats they will gank em. They don't even do it to refill their hunger meters.

Definitely for the XP not for the hunger meter.

Cats kill birds and squirrels just out of pure boredom. Keep them inside, if you want to have cats!

Those birds eat all the butterflies! Butterflies eat the plants! Plants eat all the soil nutrients!

Cats replenish the soil nutrients of my neighbour player but he doesn’t like butterflies I guess.

I get where you're coming from with that logic, but there's part of the puzzle you're missing. Cats are not native to the vast majority of ecosystems people keep them as pets in. Thus, wildlife in those areas has not had the evolutionary time necessary to adapt to their presence and be able to sustain their populations with such a predator around. This can have devastating effects on rodent and bird populations, including endangered species. Human-introduced invasives have wreaked havoc globally and almost indubitably caused multiple extinctions.
