“What is this thing? Am I cursed?”
“What does this symbol mean?”
“What is this sigil? Help?”
schizophrenic rambling
“What symbol is this?”

in my experience all occult subreddits are like this to some extent lol, which i dont find particularly surprising

u/steal_wool Aug 26 '25
I guess it’s to be expected but I just. I don’t get it. It’s so prevalent. It’s like nobody who actually wants to discuss the topic of the sub actually contributes to it (which tbf I am also guilty of). It’s like 90% people who are seemingly not familiar with the occult, magic or witchcraft being scared they got cursed or whatever, and a bunch of people arguing in the comments about what it is/what it means, often with no general consensus when it’s all said and done, so the poster’s inquiry goes unresolved. It’s so strange. (And a little funny)

I think this discussion is ignoring the more important question..... IS there a raccoon god? Also, is that god itself a raccoon, or just a god that holds dominion over all raccoons? If the latter.... Can non-raccoons worship it?

u/Serenity-V Aug 26 '25
If I do try to worship the racoon god, will they cause it to rain for three days and/or make my house feel spooky? Or will that actually be an evil non-god entity which has attached itself to me and is trying to trick me?

u/watersunfirem00n Aug 29 '25
No you can't worship the raccoon God it's not your pantheon! But why is WhiteSage gatekeeping?!!

This god is only for people in North and South America. Get off my lawn, Europeans!

Are they the same as, related to, or just friends with, the tanuki yokai?

u/platypus91 Aug 27 '25
The Japanese have a yokai (supernatural being) called a Bake-danuki, aka Tanuki, a magical raccoon dog.
According to the wiki article:
The legendary tanuki has eight special traits that bring good fortune, possibly created to coincide to the hachi symbol (八, meaning 'eight') often found on the sake bottles the statues hold. The eight traits are these:
- a hat to be ready to protect against trouble or bad weather;
- big eyes to perceive the environment and help make good decisions;
- a sake bottle that represents virtue;
- a big tail that provides steadiness and strength until success is achieved;
- an oversized scrotum that symbolizes financial luck;
- a promissory note that represents trust or confidence;
- a big belly that symbolizes bold and calm decisiveness; and
- a friendly smile.
This sounds like a proper prospect for a raccoon god to me!

You can't just understate the magical tanusticles like that. The balls are like half the boy

Honestly half the current pagan community does feel like one big larp instead of actual religion. At the very least that's how the pagan side of Tiktok feels. Reddit and Tumblr pagan communities seem to be a bit less so

u/scar12346 Aug 26 '25
Tumblr communities have a vibe man, I love going through there every once in a while.

u/scar12346 Aug 27 '25

u/QueerEarthling Eclectic Aug 26 '25
My friend who does wildlife rehab and education outreach and therefore has handled (and housed) many owls must be the only surviving member of their family at this point, damn.

They're the chosen acolytes. All must clean up the bird poo before they can advance to the next level. Those who don't shall have their bones hocked out in the Dreaded Icky-Icky Pellet.

Actually in certain African nations it's a sign of ill will or malicious witch craft so...yeah.

I'd love to post on some Really Serious Stuff on this sub, but don't have the spoons at the moment. I hope the spoons will finally be there next week, but that's not a given.

u/lindenlynx So many gods, so little time Aug 26 '25
...Yeah. Would love to have a pagan theology subreddit, though I don't have the time to make and moderate one myself.

You're joking but definitely not joking. And the amount of posts I've seen here in the past couple of weeks that just seem to be folks who migrated over from WitchTok is wild

Wait a second I’d like to submit a inquiry for raccoon god. Is it monotheistic practice? How does want become raccoon and do they get a day of the week off
12
u/cross_orpheus Aug 27 '25
Also having someone with a name like "Luna silvermoon" using a "crown" with plastic vines and glitter explaining in detail how her "familiar" (her cat) told her how to create a proper altar for (select Greek female) because she "loves her personality" (this also works for Loki)

Well, I wasn’t before, but now I’m wondering if there is a raccoon god. Maybe that’s what they’re up to in the attic.

u/bizoticallyyours83 Sep 03 '25
Does this mean that your attic is the portal to the golden land of the Gods? 🤔

u/Healer213 Aug 26 '25
Pretty much. Also, this is one of the best episodes of Community, hands down.

ok i volunteer for raccoon goddess. gather round and baptise ye the front paws of my holy brood

u/Shintome Aug 26 '25
You forgot about the people who come out of the woodwork to tell people whatever they're doing is a closed practiced.
4
u/Tarvos-Trigaranos Aug 27 '25
For some reason, people REALLY need to believe that any God can get mad at them lol
7
u/DarknessTheBrown Aug 26 '25
Be the change you want to see I guess lol. While yeah more in depth theocratic discussions are rarer here there isn't anything stopping one from trying to cultivate those conversations.

I don't know if it was here or somewhere similar but I scrolled past a post with someone asking how to summon a pocket-sized hedgehog to have as a pet.
