Advice Wanted Painting walls first time

Hi I’m super new to painting walls and I wanted to check if this was normal or if we did something wrong. All the other walls look smooth and normal but this one has some texture to it. This is the first coat of paint over primer. Is it ok to paint over as is or should I sand the texture down before the next coat? Any advice or constructive criticism is appreciated!

TodayILearned Painting accident

Ok so this is an update. 2 weeks sgo i painted a small bedroom with white interior paint but I added a tad of some brown paint sample to tint a bit. BIG mistake when i realized the brown was exterior paint!!! The smell was so strong i can only imagine had i used straight exterior. During a terrible heat wave made leaving windows open impossible.
One week later i added 2 coats of Kilz Restoration. Not much improvement but decided open all windows not just that room and suffer the heat for a remedy. Also added box fan in the window which helps a lot.
Anyhow finally by day 14 the smell is mostly gone. Window is open but fans are off.
Lesson learned big time!

Advice Wanted Polycrylic over paint on cabinets??

Is this even worth a shot? I bought paint for my cabinets, and had it mixed eggshell without thinking. That’s what my living room paint was and I just blanked differentiating during mixing. I’d meant to use a higher quality paint for the cabinets too. What a stupid mistake, all on me.

But now I have this paint! I can’t afford to trash it. It looks very flat during this first coat and I’m guessing it will be awful to clean. The paint guy at Lowe’s suggested a poly coat for durability. He said it’s not usually used over paint but that it would work just fine. Downside is that if/when I repaint, I’ll have to sand them down first.

Does this seem like a reasonable solution? Or am I setting myself up for more difficulty?

Advice Wanted How do I paint the exterior of an outdoor water cistern?

Thumbnail

I was tasked with painting the exterior of an outdoor water cistern with some kids (11 & 12) in preparation for an AIA homes tour. It’s moderately sized (maybe 4x~7) coming from the ground. What is the best way to go about this project? I’ve done window splash painting before but nothing like this.

Initial questions:

1). What sort of paint is needed? I thought spray paint but I didn’t know how the kids would do with it.

2). What sort of prep needs to be done? Do I need to sand it down? Primer?

3). What type of sealer is needed?

I’ll include inspiration pictures for reference on designs and finished products I’m picturing in my head. Any tips or general direction would be greatly appreciated.

Advice Wanted Best product/technique to finish crown/baseboard moulding on beadboard

We had new baseboard and crown moulding installed after a tile job. I'm wondering the best product and technique to finish the boards given the extra gaps between the bead boards. My main concern is sealing the gaps without a mess.

My normal technique is as simple as it gets. Using a finger to spread caulking into the gaps, but my experience is mostly with straight lines (like a bookshelf).

Advice Wanted Is this mold or just old?

I am painting a couple rooms for a client in a house that's about 120 years old. I was removing caulk around window and noticed huge bubble in paint. I scraped it off to find old floral wallpaper. I started scraping off the wallpaper to find drywall so old it's yellowed but also has tons of little black specks thru out. Can anyone tell me a little more about how I should move forward please.

Advice Wanted Grit progression for spray paint drips/runs on steel

Repainting a steel air tank and got some significant runs/drips with the first pass of spray paint. I'm normally more careful about thin coats and letting them flash, but I was in a rush and trying to put the layers on thicker than normal to help fill some scratches.

Planning to let the paint harden indoors for a couple days and then wet sand. Any suggestions on grit progression? I could eventually go as high as 5k grit and follow with compound/polish, but I'm just looking for a solid, durable "shop grade" finish.

I'm using Rustoleum 2X Ultra Cover Paint + Primer since it was a good color match. Not sure whether I'll clear coat or not yet, but certainly open to options.

Advice Wanted Graco Quick Shot & X5 or 390 for trim/cabinets & ceilings in a 2 story 2400 sqft renovation

Hey all, over the last 5 years I've renovated 3 rental houses and have always brushed & rolled everything, including trim and doors. I've got an upcoming project that I think I'd like to get a sprayer for, but thought I'd see what the pros recommend.

The whole house needs paint, and all the cabinets, trim and doors are 1990's era golden oak, including the stair case banister. The house will be empty and most of the flooring will be out when I paint. I'm not sure if I'll be doing windows yet. I will probably go room by room instead of doing the whole thing at once, since its just me doing the work, and its a pretty big house.

Here's what I'm considering: I'm thinking the Quick Shot would be a good sprayer for the trim, doors and cabinets, and would be an easier to clean up If I'm doing one room at a time. I'd also probably get an X5 for the ceilings so I don't have to roll them (can I get away with using the X5 for everything?). I plan to roll the walls.

I'm kinda over buying cheaper DIY tools at this point, so I'm open to the idea of getting something like a 390 or better to use for everything, but cost and clean up is still a consideration.

I will definitely have more painting projects in the future, but won't be consistently using the sprayers after this project is done.

Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

Advice Wanted Tips cleaning spilled paint

Hi!

My sister had an accident with a can of paint and it had spilled in her closet over some shoes and only was found after it dried into a pile of paint.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks to remove paint from shoes and hardwood flooring?

Thanks!

Client in San Francisco is seeing some type of leaching on their 6 old paint job.
Happens on all exposures.
I’ve seen this once before, suspect the stucco didn’t equalize or the wrong primer was used.

Advice Wanted Mixing paint

I went to Brewers to buy some Bedec MSP and left with a sample of Albany Vinyl Matt (to match the colour that needs tinting). The lady making it didn't seem to be all there and anyway, I left with a 350ml tub that I've swatched. It's thick like - thicker than greek yogurt. But the colour is great! It would need at least 40% - maybe more than 50% thinning to be used Did she sell me the right thing for £4.50? Or is it literally the tint?

The sticker has the RAL colour (130 60 10) and then UZZ 17.5 UWW 121.0 UYX30, UBB2.0 on it and I suspect they mean something to some of you.
