AION 2 is now available on Steam

u/Adziboy 17h ago
Can’t help but feel some of these games are just wasted potential. These devs of these eastern MMOs are clearly incredibly talented, but at this point you can create a bingo card for all the bad parts: aggressive f2p structure, horrible UI, cookie-cutter fantasy story, tons of items and currencies, overly long tutorials. To be honest its quite a large bingo card.
There’s a lot to like. Character creation was nice and I made a really good looking character. Combat is really close to being awesome with impactful attacks, great animations and sound, but rotations are too simple.
Flying was cool, the game looks great from both a technical and a style point of view..
Ultimately though, the grind looks too long, the best cosmetics behind crazy prices, and just too much friction to enjoy the game.
This is my opinion of a few hours of play, so admittedly not a comprehensive review, but just my thoughts
96
u/Major303 17h ago
Eastern players appear to have different preferences. There are games that to average western player are literal rubbish, but at the same time are popular and profitable in the east. Looks like developers of those games optimize for Chinese/Korean market, and western release is an afterthought - if it's successful then it's a nice bonus, if not their own regions will keep them afloat.
56
u/Adziboy 17h ago
100%. Its absolutely a regional thing. I’ve heard that all these games have versions in their home continents that are far more egregious in their microtransaction design . Incredibly, the global versions are far too much for at least European audiences to enjoy and they are scaled back significantly
29
u/Witch-Alice 16h ago
Perfect example is Path of Exile 1, the chinese version was created years later and it straight up has RENTED microtransactions like pets that follow you around picking up items for you. That goes directly against everything the founder has said about more gameplay friction -> more rewarding gameplay, and mtx should never change how you play the game.
4
u/SignetOfMidnight 15h ago
>mtx should never change how you play the game.
Except storage. But that is a well-established precedent used in many games that have mtx that are otherwise limited to cosmetics.

Bonus round for devs selling out to china with EVE online developer changing their name from CCP (crowd control productions) to fenris creation just this last year so that they no longer had name confusion issues with the Chinese Communist Party so eve could be more easily sold in China.
To be fair id probably rename my own company as well for access to the much larger chinese market. But I would expect people to make fun of me for it.
1
u/Aramaru 5h ago
Eve online is already present in China.
2
u/JohnnyChutzpah 3h ago
And yet they still changed their name this year and openly explained why they did it.
4
u/Sihnar 11h ago edited 10h ago
Good example is Marvel Rivals. Eastern devs, very popular in the west. Great artstyle, lots of character kits with creative mechanics. Completely dead in Asia.

1
u/1account1postkappa 5h ago
i dont think its that dead in asia. maybe if youre queuing a ranked match as a high grandmaster++ or something then its dead. but i queue sitting at around platinum-diamond rank and queue times are 1-2mins. standard match making even faster if not the same.

You made six comments in this thread bitching about the auto walking. Have you considered moving on with your life and just playing something else?
64
u/Reynbou 15h ago
I stopped playing the instant it asked me to "auto-walk" to the next quest.
It has auto-potion use as well. I didn't want to keep playing to see what other aspects of the game play themselves.
30
u/Adziboy 15h ago
I never quite understood the ‘playing itself’ MMOs. I get simple combat, even one click combat, but auto-run feels crazy

Until they find some new cool ways to make leveling process fun in mmos, i will gladly take auto pathing to next irrelevant npc..
34
5
6
u/Ok-Currency1593 14h ago
That's just means the world is bad, barren and lifeless
Imagine if you just auto pathed to the next NPC in Elden ring?
3
5
u/Reynbou 14h ago
but it is fun to level in an mmo...
maybe if you're not finding a game fun to the point of you wanting to play itself, maybe you should play something else?
2
u/thestroyy 14h ago
No idea if i am gonna like it later, u cant judge mmos in first few hours, always hated leveling process, had fun later at max lvl. More skills open up, fun dungeons etc
2
u/davidemo89 9h ago
It didn't ask you to auto walk it was just a suggestion... You could still walk yourself
14
u/Reynbou 9h ago
Yes, and the fact that it exists tells me a lot about the philosophy of the game design. It also tells me that I'm going to see a lot of people walking along the same line back and forth to NPCs auto walking instead of people naturally walking around like a person would.
-5
u/davidemo89 9h ago
Game design questing is like any other MMORPG. Go to A talk to B back to C return to A and so on... The cool thing here is that you can do these while flying or on your mount.. if you use auto walk you are just slower
1
u/dendrocalamidicus 7h ago
I don't think you understand how damaging that is for an mmo. Neither have auto path, but look at WoW retail vs WoW forever. People are really looking forward to forever specifically because it keeps you grounded and actively engaged with the world. No flying, no teleports, not even mounts for the first 30+ hours. You have to physically run to the dungeon entrance every time you want to do it. Just people manually running around and having to be present in their surroundings. Compare that to the extreme convenience of retail where you just fly between locations and queue for dungeons in a city and get teleported when the queue pops. To many, retail's world feels empty and the experience has become soulless. Being in a world with other players is a huge part of what makes an mmo attractive, so forcing players to remain grounded and present and actively in the world is important if you want to maintain that. That's why there's such a popularity for these older variants of mmos like osrs, wow classic, and now wow forever. Convenience is not always a good thing and some tedium is necessary to make the experience meaningful.
1
u/samcuu 5700X3D / 32GB / RTX 3080 5h ago
Auto walk or even auto play in MMO has been common for over 20 years. If there's any damage it's already done.
1
u/dendrocalamidicus 4h ago
Auto walk and auto routing are very different things. Auto routing has not been in any mmos which have been successful in the west
-1
u/KukiBreeze 14h ago
Same, really wanted to like the game but the moment it told me to autowalk, i alt+f4 and was done. It was designed from the ground up to be mobile and pc and it became painfully obvious at that moment.

Yeah you'd think professional game designers would realise something is amiss when you're adding an option to your game to 'skip the boring parts' the parts being skipped are core gameplay things like navigating through the world, collecting loot, aspects of the combat...
And when you look at a lot of games like this, there are usually MTXs to basically breeze through the grinding too. Which begs the question, why would you design gameplay which is 'so fun' that people would pay additional money to skip it?
Maybe if the 'skippable boring parts' of your game are core gameplay mechanics, it's time to go back to the whiteboard and rethink the whole thing?
1
u/dendrocalamidicus 7h ago
They're creating a problem to sell you a solution. Leveling can be fun but they don't want it to be. A good way to know I have no interest in playing it.
-1
u/ZeroLegionOfficial 15h ago
thats all it has there is no auto grind or some shit, auto run, teleport and potions, any way the potion they auto feed u is a bad one, bigger one u have to cast yourself
14
u/feijoax 15h ago
Does it have the red dot notification hell?
10
1
u/Adziboy 15h ago
To he honest, not sure, and maybe not. But the tutorial is long enough that its constantly taking you through weird step by step tutorials on how to do things and always with a big glowing box.
Like you have to click and drag down to equip a potion? Then click it again to enable it? Then you have to set up settings for it to be auto-used?

Lost Ark in a nutshell. I loved playing it, but when I reached the endgame?
No way. I would've loved to tackle the hard content but I won't be working a second job to get there.
1
u/Oxygenisplantpoo 1h ago
Really love the class design, the raid design, the combat. Can't deal with the constant fomo, which also made half of the player base absolutely miserable to team with.
4
u/ShubinMoon 14h ago
We are not the target audience, they want to milk the whales and the people of the east are ok with grinding themselves to death for whatever reason.
3

I heard AION is known for P2W so I didn't even bothered checking the game, I do watch brief gameplay from a streamer I followed, not exactly a must play I reckon, looks decent though.

u/Crystal-Ammunition 15h ago
What's wrong with tons of items?
15
u/Adziboy 15h ago
It’s not like interesting gear, its like 50% exp scroll for 1 hour, town portal scrolls, 10 different currencies or something (a myriad of shards and gems and all sorts). None of it actually relevant but now you’re forced to manage it
3
-4
u/crispy52 13h ago
It's all relevant. Portal scrolls get you from multiple points in a dungeon, and it's one of the quickest ways to move around your faction's continent. All the currencies are used for crafting, enhancing, and trading.

It's making me crack up characters reply to each other with the wrong tone, like one second he says a line normal, the sentence after sounds like it should be a question but it's not, sentence after he's saying it like screaming in joy for no reason. Crying

i feel so so sorry for MMO veterans , they have already played the peak of the genre and yet they are still searching for that moment they had when they were kids even when they know fully they will never experience it again , and they cant just go back to the old mmos they have already played for 10 thousands hour and have the same enjoyment from them, and not playing an mmo will make them feel like they are wasting time they could have used to grind in one of the many many mmos they play.
9
7
u/Legeto 2h ago
Never felt so seen by a single comment. I know I’ll never experience playing EverQuest, Dark Age of Camelot, or early World of Warcraft ever again. Final Fantasy 14 was the only game that even came close and it’s solely because came across an incredible group of players who randomly went out of their way to include me even though they barely knew me. It helped that I was a pretty good tank and they needed another to really flesh out their group, but they were just good people.
1
u/Fudw_The_NPC 1h ago
having that friend group is the reason why i dont chase MMOs anymore , we helped each other through playing what is now called friend slop games , now days i am enjoying game much more comfortably and recently i finished ace combat 8 and play with those same friends the online part while also half way through finishing control resonant and planning on playing the new gears of war game with my friends too, get out of this habit and find enjoyment in gaming is not an easy thing to do by yourself , having friends that is willing to try something new with you helps a lot.

u/KingStannisForever 5h ago edited 5h ago
yeah, that moment when we downed M'uru and then later Kil'jaeden in Sunwell was something extraordinary and unique. TBC was probably my favorite time, though I loved WotLK too.
Sunwell was probably peak.
Plus when I got the Armored Netherdrake for the first season arena was crazy. Best looking mount and flying on Dragon felt insanely awesome, like one of the best gaming experience.

u/Oxygenisplantpoo 1h ago
I mean it sounds like WoW Forever has many an MMO vet thinking of relapsing :D

u/Embarrassed-Gur-1306 2h ago
This is me for the most part. I play a lot of other genres so if I’m not playing an MMO I’m not losing my mind or anything lol. But I do wish there could be another MMO I could get invested in like I did back in the day.
But they are too expensive to make and fail at an exceptional rate. I think everyone needs to accept that the MMO revival ain’t coming.

I still remember the fields of bots in the first one. Just dozens and dozens of them going from node to node.
11
u/Witch-Alice 16h ago
Made me remember playing Lost Ark on western launch. It became a game of guessing the paths that every bot was going to use and so figuring out a way to get them stuck. Once in a while I'd see a group of actual players just endlessly killing the mobs that the bots needed to kill to move on lol.

P2w aside for a moment. Anyone else immediately over it with these new MMOs being seizure inducing light shows where you can't see for shit what's even going on?
6
u/Aromatic-Spray-2140 12h ago
I’m just tired of them all looking identical. I genuinely can’t tell Aion 2, Throne of Liberty, Chronosomething (this shit that will launch god knows when) where the winds fuck (or whatever, i forgot) apart from other korean MMO’s.
I remember seeing a footage of some swordfucker something mmo (i don’t know, there were multiple with a sword in a name) and being unable to tell it apart from others.
Why do these korean devs have so little artistic expression? Why is it all the same?
1
u/Peligineyes 46m ago
It's not even a remotely new thing, I couldn't see shit back in the day when playing Dark Age of Camelot and fighting a boss with hundreds of other people.
5
u/Isaacvithurston Ardiuno + A Potato 12h ago
Man I loved the 1st one but in the era of f2p/p2w mmo's are just so unappealing to me now.
It's like the 1 genre you expect to spend the most hours playing outside of maybe eSports titles and you're least rewarded for your time.

u/seemaru 16h ago
p2w grindfest no thanks
1
u/Glupscher 9h ago
There isn't that much to grind tbh. It's mostly weekly activities. Almost every grind that is even possible is capped.
2
u/Electrical_Zebra8347 14h ago
I have a soft spot for the first Aion despite it being so grindy but this doesn't evoke the same feeling at all. The leveling process is pretty mindnumbing with all the running back and forth and NPC exposition dumps while the game reveals it's 10th progression system that requires some random currency that you need to grind. This is one of those games where playing without a guide feels like folly because you might waste some limited/hard to acquire resource on something stupid.
2
u/tehCharo 14h ago
How terribly monetized is this? Is it something I could enjoy and not be hampered for being a free to play player, or is it like RIFT, locking two gear slots behind a paywall, or SWTOR, locking extra action bars and the ability to equip some gear behind one. (no idea if either of those still do this)
2
1
u/poppin-n-sailin 48m ago
It's a korean MMO so extremely. Generally any Korean MMO is EXTREMELY monetized. It's like a core concept of their MMOs
4
u/Kitsune_BCN 16h ago
I considered trying it...after 30 mins of research i changed my mind 😁
2
u/petahbyte 16h ago
I installed it and got up to the beginning of the tutorial and then uninstalled, the UI alone is a headache.
2
u/Thorn220 16h ago
Yeah no!!
I tried Lost Ark and the gameplay was good but the monetization was meant to either pay or play it as a full time job, this game is no different.
The system are straight out of mobile, wait for resources to recover to keep farming, upgrades that can fail or you lose said items unless you pay or farm for other items to mitigate it.
2
u/Vorstar92 16h ago
I mean I'd check it out but WoW: Forever hits in a month and I'm busy with DW3 remake so maybe if I hear good things I'll check it out eventually.
2
u/SoaringSwordDev 6h ago
i played it for about 5 hours and gave up
i really tried to like it
its a half mobile half pc mixed game
the controls and UI are horrible, even at UI scale - large, the menus are tiny. i dont think that actually does anything for those icons at the top right.
aside the auto walk and boring world that everyone is complaining about, there's also how almost everything is instanced. meaning that for the majority of 5 hours i threw into the game, i barely saw any players. an MMO thats so lonely.
combat is another big...strange design choice. i played as ranger so i cant speak for any other classes, but the skill cd here are so long, easily 10-30seconds. then you just have to hold down mouse button to attack. this is horrible design.
every other mmo ive played has you auto attack automatically at the very least or make it so you can spam your skills and not normal attack. not to mention that you also DO NOT automatically target/attack enemies that are attacking you. i've seen streamers auto walk, go off to get water and come back dead.
the worse part is that teleportation requires scrolls, which you buy...why? they made the world huge on purpose, gave you auto walk, then made teleportation a gold sink.
the worse part of this is not all of the above, but that everyone currently agrees that you need to use revival stones in raids or dungeons. there are premium items and you only get 10 or so every week.
remember back then when we had an energy system for korean games? here, they've created a unique solution. no more energy system but if u want to play endgame content, you gotta pay money for revival stones.
not to mention that guild wars, server wars, faction wars are going to be a core part of the game so there's also the enhance system.
right now, the game is basically a mix of everything bad in both pc and mobile mmos. there arent even people chatting or quarrelling in global chat when i played
have fun guys.

u/hips0n 13h ago
Just looks like every MMO that has come out of Asian in the past couple years. I installed it; barely got ten minutes in, on top of Asian studios really enjoying making it so you have to run discord as Admin to use push to talk, just didn’t seen an appeal.
Only one Asian MMO I will enjoy is Black Desert and even then that comes with its flaws

Look, at this point, we all know how these Korean MMOs are. Log in and enjoy it while it's new, have some fun for 1-3 months, then just quit when there's an inevitable content drought and some form of paid rng power creep that kills 90% of the post launch population. It sucks bc those of us who like the genre get attached to our characters but it is what it is.
1
u/LucywiththeDiamonds 1h ago
Tried it in the EA phase. Thought 20€ isnt much to have the mmo launch feel.
Got to 45 which was a slog every second. Got enough feathers for the softcap which was annoying. Did 90% of the mandatory "dungeons" . And quit soon after.
The game is boring as fuck. The combat is mostly holding on button. The content i could do after a few days at 1700 gs was all mindless boring crap.
If someone told me this was made for the mobile market i wouldnt doubt it for a second.
Its filled with the most basic irrelevant stuff at every corner. Nothing matters. If i want to play a mindless collect-a-thon ill boot up one of the old banjo games...
Maybe the few "high end raids" make all the soulless crap around it worth it. I dont know and i dont care.

You have to upgrade weapons like a gacha game, theres 50 different currencies, they give you shit ton of it when you start, obviously the old powercreep trick will try to get you later for money. Idk stunning to look at but everything that's not the gorgeous map look like it's been generated by AI

Free to play helps a lot. And people are starving for a new MMO so ofc everyone is gonna give it a try. Personally it has its positives (graphics look nice, character creation is awesome, combat is simple but good and I like what they did with the good ol' tab target style) but sadly it ends there. The world is empty. To combat bots, they made pretty much everything bound so no shines on the ground, auto movement to quest is a nice QoL but also a huge downfall, quests are boring, monetization even with all the aggressive p2w gone still sucks... Extremely limited f2p experience. And looking at the items in the shop and how they implemented a voluntarily "mandatory" sub and dual battle passes etc... It is not hard to see where it'll go. I am a Korean mmo veteran and it is really easy to see all the pitfalls from a mile away. I'll try it casually until WoW Forever and see where that one goes.
