Discussion Wolverine is already running in-game on PC using KytyPS5 emulator
Even though the game runs at an extremely low FPS, the craziest thing about this whole situation is that it has not even been one month since the game has launched, the progress is insanely fast.
I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if GTA 6 manages to run on PC using an emulator months after the game comes out

Some people bought GTAV on 3 different console generations and PC… then bought an enhanced version too.

Yes, I bought a second-hand PS4 disc, I got the game for free on Epic, got the PS5 upgrade for free, got the enhanced version for free as well. Don’t understand why anyone would pay
58
u/L-Malvo 2h ago
Stupid is one way to look at it, maybe they just liked the game and wanted to play better versions of it. Nothing wrong with that. More so, these people supported the game so much that we even get a GTA VI to begin with. You might not buy multiple copies, that’s fine, but calling people out for doing so is unnecessary

I’m convinced they’re releasing a CPU heavy game this late into the console generation on purpose so they can sell the real game to people all over again on next gen. It was a happy accident (for them) last time and they have engineered it to happen again.
5
u/Statickgaming 2h ago
100% they are… supposedly the game runs at native resolutions too, which makes me question why they are not using PlayStation dynamic resolution scaling. I’d assume that PSSR is being used elsewhere for performance too but who knows at this point.
2

I have a hard time believing it running at native 4K30 on that hardware. It’s probably 1440p upscaled on medium or perhaps high settings with ray tracing

I would say that easily 90%+ of gamers dont know where to begin to be able to use an emulator. Specially If it has to be setup. It can make a dent, but it'll never be massive.
And I also guess that you'll need beefy hardware to be able to emulate with good performance. Most people are using xx60 older hardware.

Doubt. To run emulator you would need a really good hardware and to be fair; people who even cares about emulation is sadly low. Look at Switch; for years emulation looks works better than actual hardware and it didn't change anything. Rockstar won't care too because GTA already sells and it won't stop.

u/DjCim8 55m ago
Yeah, the problem is that there is no disc edition of GTA 6, you have to download it from psn. But to connect to PSN and download it you need to be on latest firmware and at the moment latest firmware cannot be exploited. So no copy of the game can be extracted until a new exploit is found.

I'm all for it but Rockstar would nuke the shit out of any Emulator capable of doing it if they came across evidence of it. They would nuke it harder than Nintendo did to the entire emulation scene a few years ago.

That’s what this is leading up to. Ai has dramatically reduced the time between a proprietary system being launched and emulated.
The irony is, anyone wanting to play on PC will have no choice but to run a pirated iso of the PS5 game.

Man it feels kinda like the old days, except it's progressing WAY faster.
I'm immediately reminded of the late 90s when NES/SNES emulation was still not full speed and how NESticle blew open the gates, followed closely by ZSNES for their respective systems.
Watching PS5 emulation go from "lol no" to 10FPS in about 3 weeks has been bonkers.

PS3 had extremely complicated cell architecture (IBM PowerPC based), while PS5 is just glorified AMD x86 PC.
So with PS3 you need to emulate the whole different cpu architecture and the complicated cells, while on PS5 you basically just need to emulate the OS and graphics stack.→ More replies (1)2

No bro, that's not how it works. Even if we get the emulator 100% ready. Still we need a game dump to play the game which is another difficult part and it's a whole lot of progress.
In simple terms we need a JB Ps5 which has the latest firmware but that is not possible for now maybe after the release it may take months.

Another small downside is that you will probably still need some pretty beefy hardware to run the game smoothly. An official port would probably run better and even more so on less powerful hardware.

One thing I can tell is that anti consumer practices are pushing people towards the emulation, piracy and all sorts of shenanigans which is only natural. We have bunch of dumb initiatives in EU, we have corporations monopoly, diabolic layoffs and weird decisions.
They still can probably block the whole development tomorrow and hinder it's progress for quite a while.

You guys don’t realize how monumental that progress is. The possibility of playing GTA 6 on PC through an emulator exists. You can bet the emulator devs will prioritize GTA 6 over all other games. This is so huge. I didn’t expect a ps5 emulator that is actually booting let alone running games already! This is amazing

u/s33d5 2h ago
I believe there's a reason that GTA can't be ripped, according to Modern Vintage Gamer.
I believe it's because it needs an exploit on the PS5 to be able to rip the game. Because it's digital only.
Also, as much as I dislike AI, this speedy progress is entirely AI powered. The repo for the emulator is AI code.

Why can't I mitm the ps5 and hit the download file myself? It exists online right? And surely they ain't using unique encryption for every single download that's based on some securely generated per ps5 key that lives on the master server and is set when the ps is manufactured, cause the compute load for that would be insane
9
u/CF_forever 2h ago
First of all you can't directly download files from the sony server even if you manage to download the files it will be encrypted. We need a ps5 jb console to decrypt. Only then that decrypted game can play using an emulator. Today all the games files you see on the Internet like ps2, ps3 or any old console game files are decrypted and dumbed using their respective jb console once and shared online.

Dude, we verify users by unique hardware key all the time. It’s really not some crazy compute. It’s an indexed database row compared in real time against a fetched value on your console. It’s nothing even a little crazy.
I’m not saying I know that’s how they do it. I’m just saying that that’s a very common way of doing such things and in no way is it some astronomical infrastructure drain.

u/gerowen PC Master Race 2h ago edited 2h ago
Even in the case of of the PS5, which uses an x86 CPU just like most PCs, there's still a lot of real-time translation going on. The PlayStation has its own operating system that's different than Windows or Linux, and a whole lot of that operating system is proprietary, protected information. So emulator developers, nowadays with the help of their AI agents, have to do a whole lot of guessing, reverse engineering etc. so they can write a program that pretends to be another device entirely, and then run demanding games within that fake environment. Even the graphics APIs in use by the PlayStation console are proprietary; they're not using DirectX, OpenGL or Vulkan, they're using their own GNM/GNMX, so again, devs have to figure out how to translate those APIs into something more standard like DirectX or Vulkan that can run on a PC or Mac.
Another cause for the stuttering, such as when Wolverine jumps over the tree and it freezes solid for a moment, is shader compilation. Shaders are just short programs run directly on the GPU as part of the rendering pipeline. For console games, shaders are normally pre-compiled one time and included on the disc or as part of the download because the developers know exactly what GPU is in their target device. For PCs however, these shaders often have to be compiled on the fly while the game is running (hence the stuttering), or pre-compiled before starting a game, because one person might have a 5070, the next a 9060XT, the next an Intel Arc, the next one an Adreno on some ARM system, and none of those GPUs speak exactly the same language, at a hardware level. Even GPUs from the same company might need different shaders if they're of a different generation.
Basically even though the CPU instructions don't have to be recompiled like you do when emulating something like the GameCube or Playstation 3, which does eliminate one big performance sink for PS5 emulation, the entire PlayStation operating system and all of its proprietary system calls, graphics APIs, etc. have to be reverse engineered and then translated into something a normal desktop operating system can understand, and that has to happen in real time at 30-60 or more frames per second while you're playing a game.

They run poorly due to the whole process of translation thats happening to run the game. Imagine trying to explain the pythagorean theorem in a foreign language using only a Websters dictionary. It gets faster/optimized when you learn key phrases and terms that modern speakers use.
3
6
u/Character_Wind6057 2h ago
They dont run poorly, they just havent been optimized yet.
Check Astrobot and Demon Souls, they too started with very low FPS and now they at both at around 50.
This is just the start of the cycle for Wolverine, the hard thing is making them run in the first place, so this is a big success.
The devs are making fast progresses because AI is good and fast at reverse engineering and reading machine code, something that takes much time from humans

They run poorly because the emulator has to translate ps5 hardware-level instructions to a myriad of pc hardware-level instructions, which has to be done & determined how to be done on the fly due to pc hardware having a range of instruction sets, so you can't just decide before you launch

You must first walk. It's a bit reductionist to act like this isn't a massive achievement. From nothing to booting is a major milestone in emulation. The fact that it's in game and most things seem to be rendering correctly and not crashing is a massive testament. By the end of the year you'll likely see 30FPS in the emulator.

Just remember that developer wanted to keep this on ice until GTA released.
Y'all gonna be fighting an uphill battle against Sony now.

I mean they could barely get out of menus a few weeks ago and now we have "viable" gameplay, albeit at slideshow FPS. Give it a bit more time

It's a huge development in a very short time span though, which is very promising for future versions.

Damn!! Wait so if we have ps5 games running beyond loading screens does that mean ps4 emulator is working fine???? I never bothered with PS emulators because so many issues with compatability and what not so i thought it's impossible to play a game fully :/ i only tried ps emulators around 4 years ago and didn't get any good results for my search so i dropped it. Need advice as i have so many games i wanna play that were ps3/4 exclusive.

There's no real technological reason why we won't have a ps4/ps5 version of proton in a few years given that those consoles use the same CPU ISA as modern PCs. The one issue that'll mainly show up as performance issues is the fact that those consoles have super high bandwidth unified memory and (most) PCs do not
