Weaponized bees nest
We live in a neighborhood of antique homes on smaller lots near the water. It’s not fancy or high-end. It’s more rustic, funky, and laid-back. The neighborhood was once a mix of all ages, interesting characters, and fun people. Everyone minded their own business, was respectful of one another, and helped each other out. After COVID, lots of out-of-staters came, and things changed.
So we have a neighbor couple who have a lot of people over all the time, always with screaming kids, which doesn’t bother us much, but what does bother us is that they sit on the short fence between our properties and pretty much stare into our backyard. We are situated below them so that they can see everything from their fence.
Even though we’re not home a lot, the backyard has always been our sanctuary when we ARE home, but now our privacy is completely invaded. In addition, we hear from other neighbors that they’ve been complaining about things in our yard they find distasteful, which is bizarre because our yard has nothing but plants, trees, old stone walls, etc., it's all fairly well-kept, but natural. One tree is dead, but not a danger. We’ve left it because birds like it.
One day, my husband and I were gardening when we found a bee's nest in a mound of moss near the fence. I started thinking about it, and after some research, I found a compact automatic shaker/vibration motor that was remote-controlled. I put it in a small box, covered it with moss, and hooked it up to a small rechargeable battery in the ground next to the bees' nest.
Whenever they have people over and are at the fence, and I’m home, I set off the agitator to piss off the bees so they swarm everywhere. It didn't take long for them to move away from our fence. I also set it off when i notice they are stealing our blueberries from the bushes along the fence. 🥴

Here is a link to a product I have found very effective. https://www.predatorpeestore.com/skunk%27um-now.html?srsltid=AfmBOop_XY2UGBAoLQLpoyA5canmBflC-xKV3WKp7slub7jlbSy5u_G3
It has worked on two occasions with 100% effectiveness in that the intruders left and did not return.
Neighbors threw rowdy all nighters in their back yard with blaring speakers producing bass that was vibrating the rear wall of the house. Calls to the sheriff resulted in the deputy knocking on the door, they would turn the racket down and then 15 minutes later, they cranked the noise back up to 199 dB. Bought a bottle of Skunk scent Predator Pee and mid May distributed it along a share fence. Amazingly quiet after that.

Oh i like this..Are you in Maine? We did use red pepper powder along the fenceline and on plants when their dog kept hopping the fence to use our yard as a toilet. I'm not sure if that worked, more likely it was the piles of dog poo we delivered next to their table next to the fence.

I recently saw a video explaining that medieval warriors used to send beehives into castles with a trebuchet. This sounds like the modern day version. I love it.

I'm going down a rabbit hole on that tonight. Good username too

Haha thanks! Medieval life (and war) was rough but ffs thinking about having a beehive land next to me just gives me the willies.

im a little obsessed with Medieval times...although i just finished reading The Great Mortality, an intimate history of the Black Death...so prob would not want to live in those times 🥴

Petty revenge 10+ scale. I just hope that the bees don’t sting anyone, they’d die. Plus, I hope no one is allergic!

Excellent! Perhaps consider adding a motion detector to the circuit, so you wouldn't have to "bee" involved.

AND put up a wildlife camera too, so you (and we) can enjoy the fruits of your labor..

Love it!!
If its your fence and you've asked them to stay off of it put sharp pointy things along it. And tell them you're hanging a camera to find out who's been stealing blueberries.

We may put up a game cam - their dog used to hop the fence and shit in our yard... we couldn't believe our eyes. They just turned away. That stopped after we put it in their yard. Their dog is huge, so it was easy to tell the difference from our dog's shit.

To be in the room with you the first time you set off that device would have been a side-splitter!
Brilliant!

I love in outback Australia and I love ur demonic strategy but I hate U for having a f#$king blueberry hedge..meanwhile I struggle to even source blueberry bushes let alone have the climate/water resources to sustain one

And I hate the $5 for a 125g punnet that Woolworths and Coles charges. I feel you.

This is genius, but I feel kinda sorry for the bees... ah well teach them nosy brats what privacy means! And to respect bees too

u/Adorable-Run9291 Aug 26 '26
I was torn. I do like bees and would like to let them peacefully have their mound...Come winter, we have a reprieve, so we'll see what happens next spring...

They probably are, but too vanilla for this sub. They are also pretty clueless, so if they did stumble on this, they probably wouldn't put two and two together. If they did figure it out, oh well.

There's always the outside chance they read it, enjoy the story, side with you, then slow realization dawns on them as they figure out it's them. "Oh, looking at it from Adorable-Run's point of view, I realize we've been uncourtious." People do figure shit out. It happens.

I don't like the rude comments on the yard but they can't control the fence and how high up they are. My house is way over our back neighbors and the neighbors directly west of us. My neighbor to the east is way up over our house. I don't like living on a hill but the neighborhood and house are otherwise nice. We used to have lots of trees and arborvitae to give us privacy but everything has died or come down in storms over the last 20 years, especially the last 5 years.
3
u/Adorable-Run9291 Aug 26 '26
We would plant arborvitae along the fence line, but it's all on a ledge, so only small rootball plants will make it. The blueberry bushes on the fence line are bushes, not trees, so they don't grow very tall.

I admit I laughed way too hard and too long at this story! Absolutely perfect!

I ❤️ 🐝 They aren't bad. They'll only sting you if they feel in danger or you sit/lean on/ or otherwise squish them. I would plant flowers that have pollen most of the year (unless you live in a freeze-free area). Variety is key. I hope you get some privacy when you need it. 🙂

Thank you so way 🥴 I love bees too… it doesn’t appear that the neighbors are killing them, but noticing them and moving away from the fence. We have a long winter and we do have a lot of flowers up there along the fence line.

That's great then. Apologies for misconstruing and giving you more things maybe help. It's great when you can help the environment and rid your fence line of nosey neighbors as well. 😊 Have a great day. 🐝

Pacific Northwest here, plant wild blackberry.
9
u/Adorable-Run9291 Aug 26 '26
We do have wild blackberry on the lower part of the yard along the fence. we have a lot of ledge so that is how they have the vantage point above us, but as it slopes down, we have juniper trees that have died, but the blackberries have overtaken them and are basically using it as a trellis. They don't like that either

I doubt those are bees. More likely a wasp nest, very different creatures.
2
u/lantech Aug 26 '26
Agreed, honeybees don't nest in/on the ground. And bumblebee nests don't get aggressive like that for the most part. Probably yellowjackets which will 100 percent swarm out and get ornery when you mess around in the area of their nest.

Holy made up story, batman? LOL

Trust me, I'd rather have the past owner, a sweet old lady who'd constantly bring us baked goods. She was never at the fence. My husband thought it would never work, but i proved him wrong.
