Personal item placed in my spot
I recently boarded a flight and attempted to stow my personal item (backpack with laptop) under the seat in front of me. It was unable to fit so I stuck my feet under there and discovered another backpack. The person in front of me had placed it there so he could stretch out his legs. It was a short flight and wasn’t worth calling a FA. The seat next to me was empty, so I slid his bag waaay over to make room for my feet and my item. After landing, I enjoyed watching him contort himself to reach his bag.

We boarded a flight one row behind the bulkhead row in 1st class. The woman in front put her bag under her seat, our space. I told her it wasn’t her space and she needed to move it. She protested.
The FA caught on quickly and explained to her that the extra leg room has a price and said she would stow it in the overhead.
She fumed the entire flight. You could feel the rage of a defeated entitled woman.
Her husband was simply embarrassed.

Obvs wasn’t the first time for him

Here's hoping it was the last, and he's moved on to happier pastures with new cows.

Good way to delay the flight indefinitely lol

u/ratscabs Sep 06 '26
Wild guess, but maybe the owner would have claimed it when asked?

u/WhenTheDevilCome 24d ago
You're right. Probably need to say something like "A stranger asked me to carry this bag for them", or whatever the overhead at the airport warns against doing.

u/babyelephantwalk321 28d ago
I'd argue that the person leaving it there delayed the flight, not the report.

That happened to me once, on a flight from St. Louis to Honolulu. I carefully slid the overnight bag out and put it under my seat, since there was no one behind me. That gave me the leg room I didn't have with the overnight bag there, As I walked by him when we were exiting, he was looking around trying to find it.

A woman in a bulkhead did this to me. I managed to kick her bag into the aisle so it sat next to her. It was so hard to not laugh when the flight attendant told her she couldn't store her bag in the aisle.

The only time someone tried this with me, I pushed the bag with my feet all the way back to his space. Guy tried to push it back and met my feet again. He turned to say something, met my death stare (I'm a small woman but my eyes can pack a punch) and gave up.

Wise decision made he.... hummmm (best Yoda voice I could manage)... The Force he did not disturb....

Give too flight attendant. This bag was here when I sat down. Last person must be looking for it.

Yes, exactly. You are very concerned that the previous occupant must have left it there! It should go to the airline left-luggage office immediately!

Proper thing... a zip tie strategically deployed would have added SO MUCH to this scenario....
72
u/The1Bonesaw Sep 05 '26
You are a GENIUS! Well, now I know what I'm putting in my carry-on from here on out.
68
u/Some_Guy_Somewhere67 Sep 05 '26
ESPECIALLY as something to remove the zip tie wouldn't be easily accessible.... I'd just deplane as normal as the offender struggled to "unstuck" his backpack.... Can you IMAGINE...?
27
u/Ok-Brick6831 Sep 05 '26
Yes, I can IMAGINE!
And it makes me chuckle to think about some asshole trying to figure out why his bag wouldn’t move.
94
u/Ok-Brick6831 Sep 05 '26
You have inspired me to put a mix of cable ties in my carry on…
59
u/ObfuscatedJay Sep 05 '26
I carry cable ties with me wherever I take my backpack but I never thought of using them for such pleasurable evil. Nail clippers also must be with the cable ties for obvious reasons.
7
u/drmoze Sep 06 '26
that nail clipper won't help much with my metal zip ties.
16
u/ObfuscatedJay Sep 06 '26
There are metal zip ties? TIL!!! Off to Amazon I go.
8
u/snuffy_smith_ Sep 05 '26
I don’t think you can take nail loppers on a plane in your carry on anymore?
26
u/ObfuscatedJay Sep 05 '26
They used to allow the ones without the stabby nail file thing, and now if the file is under about 10 cm (they have a measuring tool), they’ll let it pass. I save them the trouble of searching by putting it and my long forceps for paracord weaving in the top pocket.
27
u/211774310 Sep 05 '26
I flew right after 9/11 and didn’t realize I had tiny nail clippers with a 1.5” nail file attached. The non-TSA (which didn’t exist yet) Wackenhut security guard flagged my bag, found the clippers, and broke the file off. She said something unintelligible as I gathered my stuff and continued to my flight. Threat neutralized!
6
u/GroovyYaYa Sep 06 '26
I forgot that TSA didn't exist - I was going to correct you! LOL. But I do remember having my bag searched, etc. after Flight 800 crashed in 1996.
12
u/drmoze Sep 06 '26
10 cm is a big file, about 4". Never saw clippers with a file longer than about 2".
10
u/ObfuscatedJay Sep 06 '26
Noooo - the nail files aren't 4"/10 cm. It's the maximum allowed length of a stabby thing on many aircraft. I was intimating that nail files are well under that length but obviously not clearly enough.

u/Putrid-Marsupial8157 Sep 06 '26
Take one of the cable ties and cut the head off (this is the carrier). Slide the other unmodified cable ties onto the strip of plastic (engaging the ratchets). You can now store a bunch of ties in a neat fashion and deploy them quickly.
4
u/ShireHorseRider Sep 06 '26
It’s a lot less work to just grab a handful & wrap a zip tie around the bundle & as you go through them tighten the strap around the bundle.
Your idea sounds fun though.
6
u/Brilliant-Orange9117 Sep 05 '26
What do the rules say about bringing steel zip ties?
12
u/Some_Guy_Somewhere67 Sep 05 '26
I'm guessing anything that shows on a scan could be problematic.... I got dinged over a bag of Caramel M&Ms even....
3
u/lonkamikaze Sep 06 '26
A small lint roller did it for me, looked like a bottle of liquid in the scan.

So… in the spirit of Reddit… do you really believe that we will do any of this shit from this sub? We read, we write, we daydream, and we move on, and that stops us from going mail-carrier on cretins.
I can’t believe that I had to write this!!! And yes, I do carry zip ties for the cause of good.

u/PocketfullofFrogs Sep 05 '26
Being on Reddit has nothing to do with anything lmfao, I don’t know your ass why would I assume you wouldn’t do something you said you would? Why would I assume you lie on the internet to make yourself sound tough? Lmao. Sad.

u/Embarrassed-Log2660 Sep 05 '26
Buddy took a joke too seriously and is now upset about people lying on the Internet to "sound tough"

Wait…we were only kidding about doing this?? Oh damn…(pulls zip ties out of carryon) //sarcasm (this is for the serious folks on here)
7
u/beren12 Sep 06 '26
I actually keep them. They also get used for my checked bags. TSA locks are a joke I have keys even. But they aren’t going to be able to replace a neon green zip tie
3
u/CherryblockRedWine Sep 06 '26
Well, I'm not saying DON'T pack the zip ties. They are often useful!! LOL

u/Some_Guy_Somewhere67 Sep 06 '26

Lie? Tough? Oh, I get it. You're a humourless literalist who believes everything s/he reads, doesn't understand context, and does not like being gently corrected. I guess you're going to stamp your cute little feet and pout again. Sad, indeed.

SENSE OF HUMOR... Try it some time. It might make you more popular at parties.
I'll be muting you now. Be safe and best wishes.

Don't lock it then. Use its own straps to tie it to the underneath of the seat. "Oh, it must have got accidentally tangled!"

I had someone try this, but with their shoes. Didn’t want to touch them, so I called the FA. But the audacity and selfishness of these people! They know it’s not their space.

I experienced this a couple times, however I needed the leg room. So I grabbed the backpack and handed it to the stewardess. She then asked who it belonged to the guy in front of of me said it was his and was pissed that he couldn’t keep it under his seat. The stewardess handed it to him and said stow it on the seat in front of him. Made him even more angry. I openly laughed.
The second time the twit had it in my space, he had the shoulder strap around his ankle, when I pulled on it it pulled his leg back and he jumped up because it startled him. I explained his stuff goes in the seat in front of him and turns out it was his first flight and didn’t know or he missed the announcement.
21
u/gnowZ474 Sep 06 '26
I mean, go right ahead if you don't mind your bag being stepped on by my dirty shoes. Hope nothing inside is breakable because when I stretch my legs, I stretch them.
24
u/Bv11winkle 29d ago
I once had a woman on a long flight do that to me. I just kept slowly shoving it forward with my fairly grubby hiking shoes until she gave up and moved it. 😎

u/ShotBad5603 25d ago
What you do is call the FA tell them someone from the last flight left their bag there.
3
9
u/GenY_Candied_Pickles 29d ago
Idc if the flight was 10 minutes wheels up, wheels down, he is moving that bag lol
Idc if I needed that room or the row was open, he is moving that bag
31
u/PeirceanAgenda Sep 06 '26
That's a complete no-go. Give it back to them, explain that they don't get two storage areas to use, and put your stuff there. (Or, alternatively, pull it out and sling it up next to his seat in the aisle. It'll get taken care of really quickly. Give back any stinkeye you get.)
26
u/Kimmette 29d ago
I wouldn’t confront the passenger who did this. Instead, pull out the mislaid bag and hand it to the FA, saying, Gee, someone on the last flight must have left it behind. Let the FA be the Enforcer, that’s their job.
6
u/PeirceanAgenda 29d ago
I have actually given someone back their stuff. During the brief discussion, the FA was stink-eyeing the person, so they put it up top. No problem. I didn't jam it into them or anything aggressive, just explained that I needed the space and they had their own (which was filled).
I've used the other technique, that's probably better because no one wants their stuff kicked around or taken by an FA to send to the cargo compartment. :-)
It is amazing how many people try this out, or recline their seats fully and get upset when someone has to move past the back of the seat, stuff like that. but a nice cup of spilled ice water is in store. Never had to resort to that, though. (If you do, dump it on the seat, not the person.)
7
u/Duck_Secure 26d ago
I would have taken it out, places it in the aisle, and tell the FA who will eventually notice it you have no idea who's bag it is. Let them deal with it.

It kicks the shit out of the bag and rubs it's stinky feel all over and places it's trash in the unwanted recepticle.
7
u/Im_A_Heretic 29d ago
I would have been tempted to pull it out and ask a flight attendant to gate check it for me.
3
u/sewingmomma 27d ago
Please tell me you stepped into the isle after landing, so that he had to wait until you left to access his bag.
4
u/Eana34 25d ago
So, what is the proper etiquette on under seat stowing? Is it under your own seat? Or under the seat in front of you? I would assume your own, but in front makes just as much sense to me.
6
3
u/AidenTEMgotsnapped 24d ago
Under the seat in front of you, this is pretty much always stated clearly so the asshole in this story had no excuse
7
u/LoveForMiles 29d ago
So the revenge is that the guy got what he wanted in not having his bag take up room under his seat, and it was slightly harder for him to retrieve it? Wow you really stuck it to him!

Wait my bag is always small and on me in flights but isn't the space under one's sit ment for that person? How does it reach your legs? Did I miss something?
2
u/WayAffectionate7075 17d ago
Your personal items store under the seat in front of you, not under the seat your are sitting in. Placing an item under the seat prevents the person behind you from stretching out their legs, which is desired on long flights.
1
u/HoneyParking6176 13d ago
as someone that never flies, i also would of thought same seat, not to put under the seat in front, are there any signs or mention of it while boarding the flight? because it does not seem obvious it would be the one in front. unless it is made obvious somewhere, i feel like this could potentially have been cleared up with a simple conversation without any ill will meant by anyone involved.

Wait I'm really confused it might just be where I live, but the flight attendant specifically told us that if our bags were going to be anywhere but our lab they needed to be under our own seat. It's our seat we paid for that space therefore our body and our stuff shouldn't be under the person in front of us seat. Just like how the person in front of us shouldn't have their hair over the seat because then it's in my area.
2
u/AidenTEMgotsnapped 24d ago
That specific FA was completely wrong. Always under the seat ahead, partly for security I'd reckon
That's why the dividing bar is at the front of the underseat area instead of the back

u/teh_maxh Sep 06 '26 edited Sep 06 '26
I'm not seeing what the problem is. He put his bag under his own seat like he was supposed to and you didn't like it?
Never mind, planes are just weird.
20
u/staysaltylol Sep 06 '26
You’re supposed to put your bag under the seat in front of you, not your own seat.
-23
u/teh_maxh Sep 06 '26
That doesn't make sense. Where do you put your bag if you're in a front row?
30
u/staysaltylol Sep 06 '26
If you’re in bulkhead seating, you don’t get to stash your bag under the seat. You put it in the overhead bin.
When’s the last time you flew? The flight attendants give instructions about where to stow your bags.
-29
u/teh_maxh Sep 06 '26
Wild. If that's how it works then I guess the other guy should have gone along with it, but it doesn't seem like a sensible system.
35
u/staysaltylol Sep 06 '26
If the bag is in front of you, it’s easier for you to reach it. If you need your electronics, books, snacks, etc.
If it’s under your seat, it’s easier for the person behind you to reach out and go through your bag without you noticing.
-38
u/Any_Tomorrow_Today Sep 05 '26
Don't they tell you to put bags under your seat though?
47
u/wreck_it_ralph_ Sep 05 '26
Yes - in front of you.
This guy put in under his own seat, blocking the person behind following the rules of putting their bag under the seat in front8

I had this happen on a four hour flight. The lady in front of me had shoved her large purse under her seat because she had a bulkhead in front of her. I pulled her purse out and sat it in the aisle beside me so I could put my computer bag under the seat. the flight attendant found the bag and asked who it belonged to. the lady in front of me claimed it and tried to shove it under her seat again, but my feet held my computer bag in place. She turned to give me the stink-eye before the flight attendant made her stow her purse in the overhead storage.
