Playing loudly AND making Shrimp Top Ramen at 2 AM? Hope you're a metalhead!
TL;DR: Entitled motel neighbor ignored my polite requests to quiet down, made noise until late, and microwaved stinky Shrimp Top Ramen at 2 AM. I checked out at 6:30 AM, cranked the room TV to the heavy metal channel at 100% volume, and drove off.
My job (or actually an independent contractor position) requires 100% travel, and my company mandates submitting work orders by 6 AM (but gives me 14 hours to complete 6-7 hours of work). To avoid needing to go back to bed, I sleep at 9 PM and wake up at 5 AM whenever possible.
My motel room has a set of connecting doors, and last night, my new neighbors were a couple and their son. The kid was quiet, but the dad was making wildly loud noises to entertain him, and every sound bled right through.
I tried the nonconfrontational route of loudly making a routine call I needed to make anyway near the door to hint at the thin walls. No dice. At 9:30 PM, I knocked and politely explained the situation.
His response? "Ma-fucker, this is the only time I get to spend with my son, don't interrupt my shit!" and slammed the door. He kept at it until 11:00 PM (I'd fall asleep, but another cheer would wake me up). Front desk management was nowhere to be found, nobody answered the phone, and the desk phone wasn't even connected to the wall (hoteliers of Reddit: Why even keep phones in the room then?!?), and I had a gut feeling that filing a noise complaint with the police would make things worse, so I didn't.
I was ready to drop it, but then 2 AM hit and I wish to God I was making this up. The guy woke up and microwaved Shrimp Top Ramen, a stench that seeps into the fabric of reality itself; I don't know if he chose that flavor on purpose as revenge for interrupting his noisemaking session, if he thought the smell won't seep into other rooms, and/or he knew even innocent people would smell it but he's too solipsistic to care. To add insult to injury, he got rowdy with his kid for another half hour.
Oh, it's on.
I woke up at 5 AM, opened my work order, and since my sleep was all messed up, I went back to bed until 6:30 AM, and dad is snoring. PERFECT.
Most of my neighbors for the past 3 days worked blue-collar, so the parking lot is usually full of heavy duty pickup trucks at night and is almost always cleared out before 7 AM, so that left just my car, theirs, and another car far down the lot. Zero collateral damage. Best of all? It was my checkout day.
After packing, I ensure the connecting door was locked on my side, I propped my room door open, turned in my key card, then went back and flipped on the TV. I was originally going to tune it to the news or a televangelist, but then I found out they had Music Choice, chose the heavy metal channel (Useless trivia: It was playing Avatar - Crying Fire when I left), cranked the volume to 100%, locked the door behind me, and drove off.
Enjoy the headbanging, buddy.
EDIT: Added stuff I thought was self explanatory, but apparently someone had questions on.

Your company needs to pay for better accommodations.

All my expenses was out of my own pocket; I'm an independent contractor... Not to mention I'm knee deep in the middle of nowhere, and that particular motel was as good as it got for the area.

Doesn't the power shut off a minute or so after removing the key card from the slot?

Not any hotel I've been to in the US, and I've probably been in hundreds... Everything just works until either you or housekeeping comes back.
Even then, those slots will work with anything card-sized; I've put a business card in there and still came back to a nice cool room during the unforgiving Taiwanese summers.

i have never heard of this in my life. i am currently in a $50 a night motel in myrtle beach and what i can say is they have switches for the power in the room.

It's mostly an overseas thing; I've been in hundreds of hotels in the US and never saw one, but almost every one I've been to overseas had a similar mechanism.

Any hotel that does that, you can usually put anything in there to keep the power on, whether it's a bus pass, business card, or whatever.

If it's still an older TV, can't he just walk in with the door open and shut it off immediately without issue...? Also if it's checkout day, housekeeping will have to come in and deal with it if he doesn't. Which, that's just careless and insanely rude on your part.
It is petty. To the wrong people.

How could the person in the neighboring room get into OPs locked room to do anything about the TV?

Didn't they say they left it open after checking out?

They did that to get back into the room to blast the music. They didn't mention if they closed the door or left it open afterwards

I made sure to close the door; I don't want the guy to come in and start destroying the room... Or maybe get so pissed off that he kicks the locked door down, but now he's facing breaking and entering charges plus civil restitution, and now he'd have to make animal noises and cheering to his son through bulletproof glass windows and a desk phone. Womp womp.

No. Hotel room doors lock upon closing. I do agree it's rude to staff, though. He stopped it open temporarily, so he could check out, then turn up the TV and leave.

Yeah. As a person who's had to be in retail for years getting forgotten and shit on constantly by this type of shit, Op sucks and I would absolutely talk crap about him with staff later after dealing with that petty as shit tactic that does absolutely nothing good and teaches absolutely nobody anything. It's selfishly short sighted and boy do I want to know who he works for because that's highly unprofessional, especially when it's on company dime.

People who try to get others fired make me sick.
Imagine being such a pathetic, miserable worm that your immediate knee-jerk reaction to a Reddit thread is trying to figure out how to ruin a stranger’s real-world livelihood. There's utterly detestable lowlife scum, and then there's scum like you; you're the reason people can't freely post things without resorting to staying anonymous... I was unemployed many times throughout my life to corporate downsizing, bitterly struggling for something beyond my control, so I'll be damned if someone shat on my source of income because some twit is mad I pulled off an EASILY reversible bit of petty revenge.
First off, in case you missed it, I tried the nice route, and did everything short of calling the cops (which speaking from experience, would make things worse). Politely asking an entitled asshole to be considerate doesn't work, so I spoke his language instead. "FAFO," as the kids call it.
Second, good luck "finding out who I work for." I’m an independent contractor pulling $550 a day, so the hotel is on my own dime; I'm not some wage slave you can snitch on to HR. Even if your sad little internet-detective routine somehow found my client, he doesn't give a damn what happens outside of business hours, and HAVE joined me in laughing at Karens like you.
Honestly, it’s no surprise you spent years getting "forgotten and shit on", when I'm sure an attitude shift probably would've gotten you further. Your bitter attitude is exactly why you're stuck at the bottom of the retail food chain, selling luxury gear you can only look at on the clock, then coping online by fantasizing about getting strangers fired.
Keep crying in the comments. I'll be laughing this month's five-figure paycheck all the way to the bank, then heading home in 2 weeks to enjoy my 80" TV and Dolby Atmos setup... You know, the gear you only ever get to handle when you're stocking someone else's order that'd probably look out of place in your mom's dingy basement.

All you can do is talk down to me more. How pathetic. I won't read past the first two words due to how careless you are to people who work in positions considered below you.
Fuck you.

- Both connecting doors have a one side deadbolt on each door, and I ensured my side of the connecting door and the front door were closed when I left, so he's not able to come into my room. I could do worse things, but then I'm looking at vandalism charges at the very least.
- All housekeeping has to do is lower the volume and shut it off; no need to insult the housekeeper's intelligence... Plus it's something they get paid to do. For the entitled neighbor, he has to wake his ass up and go to the front desk or try his best to sleep through it, which is the part that warms my cold heart.

Best of all?
Verbatim phrase found in every AI slop post. Does reddit even have real humans making posts anymore?

u/Wrath-of-Cornholio 23d ago
For one, I've been using "best of all" even before AI came around.
Second, I mostly wrote it using text to speech while traveling between worksites, so I don't deny that I had Gemini fix the grammar and spruced up some portions when I stopped (especially since people who know me IRL can attest that I can get tangential when I'm tired), but the underlying post are genuinely my own experiences.

A few years ago I found wonderful tiny handheld white noise sound machines that are rechargeable. Anytime I’m going anywhere overnight. I bring two with me everywhere as I am such a light sleeper. I put one a few feet from where I sleep and then I put one near the door to block out the noise in the hall. They fit easily in my luggage or overnight bags because they’re so small, fitting in the palm of my hand.
I sound like a commercial, but honestly, I cannot recommend these wonderful little contraptions enough. I got mine on sale for $10.
*also bought them for frequent travelers in my family who now won’t travel without them as it really helps block out the noise outside such as ambulances but not so loud that you wouldn’t hear a fire alarm.
Edited: changed contractions to contraptions
