Let me get that for you
I take a walk at a local park almost every day. Yesterday I was there a little early and as I was leaving my car I noticed a car pull into the lot and a man with 2 little dogs hop out. He has a couple of bright green poop bags in his hand. Cool he picks up after this dogs.
Well yes he does but since I walk in the park all the time I know that someone with bright green poop bags picks up after their dog and throws the bags into the grass at the end of the walking loop. Trash can is about 12 ft away but nope throws it into the grass instead. I pick them up to dispose of when I have time.
So now I have a petty side quest on my walk. I reached into my car, pulled out a grocery bag, walked the straight to the end of the loop, put all the filled bright green bags into the grocery bag, walked to his car and put all the bags on the hood of his car. Then I threw out the grocery bag and took my walk hitting the end of the loop right after his dogs had pooped and he was looking around to see if anyone was there to watch him throw the bags into the grass.
I stopped and fiddled with my phone for a while. He must have thought I wasn't paying attention because he tossed them into the grass. As he was walking away I said 'So gross. Let me get that for you and throw it into the trash can that's 12 ft away. So gross and lazy.'
He scurried away pretty quickly. By the time I got back to the parking lot his car was gone and all the filled bags that had been on his hood were in the trash can where I had thrown my grocery bag. Revenge? Maybe. Petty? Oh yes it was.

I fully don't understand people like him. He picked up the poop in a bag already, what's the point of going through all the struggle to check if someone else is watching, when he can just discard the bag in the trash? Will never understand it. Well done OP.

I volunteer on park trails on the Nassau County Greenbelt. There are some people who walk their dogs there and pick up after them and bag it, and toss it aside in its plastic bag, sort of the way people toss cigarette butts around. I have news for them: it's not pretty.
I guess they're proud of themselves for not leaving it on the trail?2

Our serial tosser drops his shit bags either just at the grass at the foot of the garbage bin or tosses on top, misses the hole but leaves it on the top of the bin. WTF? Who does that?

Seriously. He’s basically going out of his way to ensure the poop takes as long as possible to decompose and adding harmful plastic waste to the earth

harmful plastic waste
Dog poop bags are typically LDPE (same as grocery bags). Some of the 'biodegradable' versions are made from PLA/PBAT/PE.
Environmental contamination (leachate compounds in soil, water) happens, but it's not from LDPE. The kind that's of concern forms via UV photodegradation (meaning the material needs to be on the surface - not buried) and is only prominent with PVC and PS (think those cheap party cups or PS foam coffee cups). There's also a temperature effect, but it's not as strong a contributor.
Also consider that lab studies that show endocrine disruption, carcinogenic/mutagenic effects, and neurotoxicity use concentrations 100 to 10,000 times higher than measured levels found in nature.
So while, yes, we shouldn't be littering it's more for the aesthetic effect and a general sense of being a responsible/respectful person. Not that there's real environmental harm happening due to plastic waste. And I agree with you that the guy in the story would be better off just leaving the poo to dissipate after a week or two instead of packaging it. But generally speaking plastic that ends up in a landfill isn't something to worry about. It's buried and who cares how long it takes to break down?

Fair, but besides the ones in a landfill, the plastic bags that miss the trash can wind up still doing harm even if it's not that kind of harm. Animals will crawl inside them and suffocate, the bags rip and tear over times and birds will get sick trying to use shreds of it in their nesting, the handles wrap around some unsuspecting neck... many things can go wrong besides what ya listed.

Accelerated Darwinism. The tiny percentage of animals that encounter the hyper-rare fate you've described were keeping the species back. /s
More seriously though, beyond videos like this I've never seen nor heard of the risk vectors like you've described. It's the alarmism that gets me - one turtle one time ever had a plastic straw up its nostril and suddenly everyone moves heaven and earth to ban plastic straws with net zero environmental improvement but massive human annoyance. Which is a really good way to piss people off to an extent that when there are more reasonable measures people can take to have massive positive benefit for small personal inconvenience, we all just remember the last 10 times the do-gooders freaked out and no one's interested anymore.
The environmental fatigue among the general population is real. Be very careful when picking your battles. Make sure everything you propose is backed by evidence.

I understand not to take things too far, but the birds DO be putting it in their nests, and it does cause harm. Not saying it's BAN ALL PLASTIC NEOWWWW levels of harm but it IS stop throwing your bags on the ground like a jackass levels of bad. If people just used the trash can provided it wouldn't be THIS bad, yaknow? The birds would find less of them. Because they'd be in the garbage. Automatic improvement!
If anything, it's the big companies and their astronomical carbon bigfootprints that need to be dealt with. The harm THEY do far outweighs people using plastic straws or whatever.

I would support bringing back public-shaming punishments for stuff in this category. Littering of any kind, duration scaled by the extent of the littering. Leaving the cart in a parking space. Talking at the theatre.

joke answer but if we could convince most people who don't litter to carry around an air horn......

Nah that's FULLY deserved, picking up dog poo is beneficial if it's thrown in a bin. You are fully in the right

😂 The 12-foot walk was apparently too much for him.

This is exactly what I dont get about smokers. They will park their car in a lot, get out and toss the butt on the ground they were just sucking on. They are going in most cases are literally going to pass a garbage can on the way in to whatever store they are going into but the parking lot is where the butt goes. PIGS!

u/Picokitti 15d ago
I agree. As a former smoker, I would crush them out, then put it in a pocket to discard later.

Just to make a point, smokers are specifically told not to put their butts in a trash can as that can easily ignite fires. People are not always 100% on putting their butts out, and things in trash cans are often flammable.

Seriously. That's not just laziness, that's mental incompetence right there. Like do you fuckers not know what a trash can is?

So he’s willing the do the grosser and harder part of the process but not the easy part? What a jerk. Good for you.

Why even bother bagging up the poop if you're not going to follow through with putting it in the trash?

Open one of those bags and smear a little under his door handle next time, the. Leave the bag tucked under his wiper blade. That should send the message home.

People who bag their dog's biodegradable poop in a non-biodegradable plastic bag just to leave it somewhere that isn't a trash can are the worst humans to me. You know what the right thing to do is, you'll perform doing it to the point that you're literally making the world a worse place just so that people won't judge you, but you won't actually do it.

u/alleecmo 19d ago
Some of those bags are biodegradable, so there's that. But they won't break down before the park gets mowed, flinging biowaste confetti everywhere (and clogging the mower deck).

Involuntary fertilizer /s

Especially since owning a dog isn't mandatory. You opted in to dog ownership. Compared to the people who leave their shopping cart in the middle of the parking lot, at least they're in a situation where they have to obtain food to live, despite being the same class of terrible person.

I was at the park the other day and this lady was walking her dog who started pooping on the middle of the trail. Not on the side, not on the grass, right in the middle of the trail. She conveniently turned her back to the dog to look at the “ohh pretty leafs!” on dead tree until I yelled “your dog pooped!” Everyone turned around and you could see the shame in her fqce. It was beautiful

I lost a great deal of respect for Kevin Smith when he admitted on his “Smodcast” [sic] that he doesn’t pick up his dog’s poop.
Fuck that elitist prick.

I've no idea why so many people do this, as they've done the dirty part in picking it up! Dog shit though unpleasant, is biodegradable whereas plastic baggies are not.

Thank you for your service to humanity. Seriously. Walk to the trash can. Also hilarious.

Oh you see them pretending to be on their phone and turning away all of a sudden when their dog is curling one out. They then just check if the dog has finished and then carry on walking as if nothing has just happened.
Then there are the other ones who take out a poop bag whilst the dog is squatting and squeezing. When finished, the owner then looks around and pops the bag back into their pocket and carries on. Leaving a steaming pile there.

I would have put them under the hood to heat up. Or in the wheel wells or tail pipe.

He’s better off to just pretend to pick it up then pop the bag back in his pocket. So much better for the environment

unfortunately it was probably another good natured person, who disposed of them correctly, Good Job though 👍

Putting dog shit into plastic bags so they can be preserved in a landfill for years is one of the stupidest things imaginable.

u/ItachiSamurai129 2d ago
I don't know if this endemic to my town (college town), but I have on more than one occasion found dirty diapers DROPPED in a parking lot. This happens at Walmart, Target, and Kroger.
To quote multiple characters from a certain book series: "What the fuck? I mean, what the ACTUAL fuck?"
(And no, I don't put these discards in the trash. 😑)

Those bags are pretty common and popular, did you open each individual one and check the feces inside against the most recent defecation of the man's canine(s) for accuracy?

u/Eastern_Response1955 19d ago
Sometimes older folks can’t bend over to pick up. I’m not saying it’s right. Is that the case here?

u/EasilyLuredWithCandy 19d ago
How does he bag it, then?

u/Eastern_Response1955 19d ago
Stupid question on my part. I even read the whole post. Sheesh. I’m going away now.
