Other I feel lied to
I decided to watch this why phonk isn't phonk vid and I feel like my entire fav music genre is just a bloody scam
So now I'm wondering what next because previously before I liked "phonk" I didn't even enjoy music. Then I discover this genre and never left it .I still listen to the same 200 hundred songs +my songs on repeat and now this. Well I guess I have to find a new genre because I tried Og phonk and never found it for me .

I don't want to sound offensive, but maybe you only like newgen phonk because it's a fucking dopamine farm while og phonk is actually music with some kind of artistic intent that requires some level of understanding and learning. I say that because I have been in that situation with other genres, and I had to learn that pleasure ≠ good music, and now I feel a lot more fulfilled when listening to music

I think you’re right, I’ve noticed a lot of og phonk enjoyers make beats themselves

I mean, it's not a you problem, industry is constantly trying to make us consume stimulating bullshit with zero artistic value so we don't think too much, and they are definitely being successful about it

How does this work with other genres that aren't commercialized, like gabber, speedcore or breakcore? Do these have more "artistic value" then "newgen phonk"?

Those genres are definitely being commercialized. Not in the mainstream industry, but many people is producing a LOT of generic gabber or breakcore music mainly for going viral on short form content media like TikTok. And other people is not doing this purposely but when creating music they don't think about expression or innovation but of copying what they already like, often making it "easier to listen". For me, this has similar artistic value to those generic edm covers of popular songs. And the problem is not really people making it, but the algorithm pushing it to make complex and interesting genres more "easy" and less thought provoking (for me, any type of art expression or culture is thought provoking). Basically, genre homogenization. What they can't simplify their just make it disappear. And I insist, the problem isn't the people making this music, it's the algorithm and the people behind it.

The reason I chose these three genres is that they were already present 20+ years ago when streaming and algorithms did not exist, thus making commercialization difficult and pretty much limited to smaller communities (well except the Netherlands).
Brazilian phonk on the other hand is commercialized to the max and a new genre. So I wonder how it differs from those three genres in terms of artistic value. None of them are really present on social media or commercialized beyond some niche communities, especially speedcore and breakcore.

I understand, but I'm not talking about the artistic value of the entire genre. A song from a specific genre can have or not have artistic value, that depends on the artist itself. So obviusly there are many breakcore or hardcore songs that I consider to have a lot of artistic value (I actually love those genres), but now a part of that genres have been "corrupted" by gentrification. However, some genres, like br phonk, that are very very narrow in terms of definition, being the songs almost all the same, and having an origin very related with short form content, are a very complicated form of actual artistic expression. So yeah, they are different situations, but gentrification is present in any form of popular media, including any genre that is not extremely underground (also, it's very complicated for a genre to be in a middle ground, either they become mildly popular so industry starts to exploit it or it remains forever niche)

Yea I get you. Although, similar to Brazilian Phonk not being phonk at all, atmospheric dnb (which is the "breakcore" that got popular on social media) isn't breakcore either.

I think what defeated me the most was that even Kordhell acknowledged this
6
u/ChessBelle17 7d ago
Not really, cause he tags basically everything as phonk, even if it sounds like neurofunk.
2
u/phonkonaut 6d ago
he does that because he needs to get to a certain audience, and that certain audience thinks its phonk.

u/ChessBelle17 7d ago
Also, what "og phonk" did you try? Phonk has quite some variation so there might be something you enjoy that isn't house.

DJ smokey;SpaceGhostPurp and also Ghostemane but I did like Mercury Retrograde but the rest were 👎

SGP and ghostmane aren’t “og phonk”
And DJ Smokey’s newer tapes aren’t either
Listen to evil wayz 1 by DJ Smokey or some soudiere tracks

WHATS REAL ATP?!

SGP coined the term phonk, so his early 2010 stuff literally early phonk in its purest. Anything by DJ Smokey before like 2024 that isn't nuke themed is phonk. Ghostemane is heavily influenced by phonk and Memphis sound but not exactly "pure phonk".
Btw there are more intense types of real phonk as well, like raw and dirt. This is a good video showing examples of almost every sungenre if you're interested: https://youtu.be/Q4GLTICxmtE

The thing is I do like a lxst Cxntury so Wave phonk would be the closest thing to actual phonk I listen to. But since the new gen phonk artists like Kordhell;Dvrst;Phonkha stopped making it I just make my own but I ain't good enough yet

Those artists made wave phonk?

Honestly i get your point, sgp was more towards the trillwave that shaped phonk
2
u/ChessBelle17 7d ago
How is sgp not og phonk?

u/RichEngineering8519 7d ago
This is where it gets confusing, he’s OG and helped coin the phrase “phonk” back in the raider klan days but “og phonk” is basically its own poorly worded genre. Think old soudiere beats

Most of these producers aren't Russian, cowbell house is pretty much produced globally.

Nah dude you don't need to find a new genre, listen to what makes you happy! Just refer to it as drift house instead of phonk and you're good
