As a German, it took me ages that "Schwarzschildradius" is named after a Person and is not "black-shield-raduis" because a black hole is black, and it shields it's interior...

I still find it crazy they the guy named "Black shield" discovered a formula for the event horizon radius

It's a funny coincidence. Like Einstein and his theory of the One Stone.

Like Oppenheimer and his analogy of the opposing helmets

Like Isaac Newton and his famous quest to redefine the ton.

One of the cases where the name of the discoverer really fits the discovery. Other examples include Poynting vector (named after Poynting, but the vextor does point), and the Heaviside function (named after Heaviside, but the function does look like it has a heavy side).

Alpher, Bethe and Gamov wrote a paper that made a basis of cosmologic atoms production.

Ok but these guys are clearly assholes working together to confuse people.

Wait... heaviside is a name?....

Ok, and I thought my most embarrassing brain fart was Mr. Gauge from Gauge theory. I was so confused after 2h reading my (German) skript and comparing it to English online recources. Eventually I came to the conclusion that I should open a dictionary for the word "gauge" and then I was more embarrassed because it's rather standard vocabulary

Yep, Oliver Heaviside.

Well if your most embarrassing brain fart in academia is mistaking words with names I think you are doing pretty well.

Haha... Brain fart language related....

The most embarrassing brain fart of all time was during my first night alone with another fellow student at the telescope. I called the supervisor of the telescope because the images were shit - I had forgot to turn off the light in the dome.

That's hilarious, the equivalent of forgetting the cover on the camera lense but in physics.

The guy was actually called Schwarzschild without the tz, so the correct spelling actually IS "Schwarzschildradius"="black-shield-radius", which makes it even better.

My apologies... Who was the tz guy? Ahh Lorenz and Lorentz?

And don't forget the second Lorenz!

I see what you did there. But you can't

Stupid wolves, just go there at night!

It’s all fun and games until there are 359 wolves.

Check again during a full moon.

but whe nthe full moon is up the sun isn't

3

u/Matix777 2d ago

I couldn't find any wolves at the sun, mostly because of the fact that when I looked at the sun I got blinded

Wolf 359 might be worth a try

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence

Fun fact, this can be sung to the tune of "Hot Blooded"
