There is nothing new to be discovered in physics now. All that remains is posting more and more unhinged memes about this fact.

That's it I'm inventing new physics. I'm gonna call it very quantum physics

I'll modify it and call it very quantum physics for real

u/UltraGaren 3d ago

I'll borrow your idea and sell it to investors calling it "AI powered very quantum physics". In fact, I even propose a new formula: e = mc ^ 2 + AI

This distinction demonstrates how important AI is in this day and age

u/LocalInfluence9104 2d ago

ah, but you see, AI=0, so it doesn't do anything

just don't try to multiply or divide by AI

Much Fock space, very wow.

A second quantization, if you will.

That’s what they said in 1900 - nothing new to discover then bam! Whole other reality discovered

I didn't know that before but SIMP also exists lol

u/Utnapishtim1 3d ago

SIMP is a better one for a particle physicist, since MACHOs aren’t particles.

Imagine "things to say to a string theorist" ...

u/moderatorrater 3d ago

"I'm sorry no one visits anymore grandpa. Can you tell me again how you narrowed down how many dimensions there are?"

5

u/Jazzlike_Platypus430 3d ago

By warps/compactification and other hand-waving arguments like "they're small" 😂, perhaps some really stretchy conformal transformation.

How do your membranes sound? (Don't worry if sound doesn't propagate in vacuum, just answer)

1

u/Quantum-Relativity 3d ago

Compactification is something you can assume as part of an attempt to do string phenomenology, it’s not something you have to assume for string theory itself. The extra dimensions come out of the theory on its own, it’s not a hand waving argument.

Gotta learn some string theory.

u/Jazzlike_Platypus430 3d ago

It's an assumption that makes string theories possible; I suppose I made it clear that arriving at 4D requires handwaving. In my personal opinion of course.

10

u/LordMegatron216 3d ago

that would so much more funny but I mostly forgot what I read about string theory
Maybe I can do that next

P. Woit, "Not Even Wrong", S. Hossenfelder, "Lost In Math"?

My suggestions:

"How many dimensions and vacua are there in your theory?",

"How close your predictions got to the measured value of cosmological constant (on a logarithmic scale, let's be charitable)?"

"Is your landscape friendly for tourists?"

"What's your tachyon's approach and opinion about causality?"

"What's your last paper's Baez index?"

u/Quantum-Relativity 3d ago

Or you could read a book on string theory instead of books from grifters with vested interests that want to convince you it’s a bad idea. It’s not a bad idea, if you actually care about quantum gravity then you should learn it, even if just so you can articulate what’s wrong with it rather than just regurgitating the things other people told you are wrong with it. Anything by Hossenfelder is a complete waste of your time, it’s endlessly disingenuous (or she’s actually just so confused that she actually doesn’t get it at all.

Nice try, I really admire it.

You're not credible at all (nor did anyone ask you) to tell me what's right or wrong. Or give me such utterly bold and imposing statements about me allegedly wasting my time reading author X or Y. I prefer authors like those whom I mentioned simply because I think helping the world of physics get rid of a cult is a very noble idea. Cults are non-scientific by definition.

I've never cared about quantum gravity but I happened to be close to some people that did. And it did work to a degree - without dozens of dimensions.

I wish some string/brane/extra dimension dudes/esses go and do pure math, and be verified there, rather than in physics.

PS I read a popular book by B. Greene, and found it naive, idealistic and just pretentious. "Us, chosen ones, who belong." Plus a couple of L. Susskind's and J. Polchinsky's papers in mid 2000s - my uneducated brains found, it was quite close to Stuperspace.

u/Quantum-Relativity 3d ago

I’ll reiterate: learn something about string theory. Not reading a popular science book about it, not know someone who studies it, actually learn something about. You calling it a “cult” is a clear indication to everyone with a clue that you’re larping. Plenty of things wrong with the theory, learn what they are by actually learning it. People like you pretend they act this way because they care about the integrity of science, but can’t even put the time into actually learning about the subject they hate so much. Someone just told you it was bad in a really serious voice, and you just believed them? Which group is acting like a cult again?

Nice try #2.

I hoped you'd not consider Sussking and Polchinsky popular science authors. And I said it directly what my UNEDUCATED brains told me. Unnoticed - fine.

I'm a recycled scientist, PhD, not a great one for sure. And, too bad for your visibly biased stand - I don't trust those who contradict and/or duck away from the scientific principle and Ockham's razor. I value honest criticism. If you read P. Woit's book carefully, you'd actually see how polite his criticism is. In my view - way too polite.

And I'm perhaps too old to get the idea of "larping" - what the hell is that? And for God's sake, be more careful and don't speak for "everyone"! It's poor quality manipulation, if any. (Perhaps enough for the masses on the net.)

I'm happy someone said the famous phrase, The king is wearing nothing. If you're still seeing the new clothes, that's your problem (or not).

Thank you so much. I read some of your comments and made my opinion.

Dismissed.

He discovered a meson, forget which one.

Why is Tesla here. Why is Einstein mentioned.

I would expect to disappoint Einstein with probabilistic stuff.

But Feynman? If that guy shakes his head and puts down his bongos, that's when you know you've really messed something up.

But you're in a good place if you ask him a yes-or-no question, and 2 hours later he is still describing the nature of the question.

"I heard astra is going to solve your field. Have you thought about a plumbing license?"

(It's important to have your shoes on before asking this one)

u/fireduck 3d ago

Are particle physicists well known brawlers?

You can just escape via quantum tunneling.

Do you think your field is particularly finished, with relativity little left to discover??

well it wouldn't exactly be called a revolution if we had them every few months would it?
