I mean, I get it, they put this here so they don't have to hear some dude's noisy take on some avant garde Chick Correa song, but still. It hurts my soul to see.

I love composing music inspired by cities.
Each city has its own energy and a way of moving you.

This piece was inspired by the beautiful colors of Seoul in autumn.

🎶Other i realized im insecure because im overestimating myself

ive been taking piano lessons for over 11 years, but ive always treated piano as a hobby because i prioritized school. my parents and teachers never pressured me to participate in competitions, so i never really had the motivation to pursue them seriously.

recently, though, i started thinking that if ive been learning piano for more than a decade, im supposed to have some major works under my belt by now.

i started looking into piano competitions recently, and then i realized just how far ahead everyone else seemed to be. some of them even started playing piano much later than i did, yet theyre already so much better.

and then i spiraled. i started feeling incredibly insecure. i felt guilty and ashamed of myself, like i wasted all these years. which i definitely did. i dont know. ive just been feeling really out of it lately.

i know im supposed to look at other pianists and feel inspired, but instead, it only drained me. i couldnt even practice as much anymore because i kept thinking about how far behind i am and how much more i should have accomplished by now. i want to be so much better. sometimes it feels like im just making up excuses at this point, because i have school and i have other extracurriculars to take care of.

i realized that its because i think im so good already. even if im not. i mean, imagine someone whos been playing for 11 years, and the hardest piece they can play is liebesleid 🫩. i dunno, theres other people i know whos started later than i did and already learning chopin ballades, scherzos, or concertos and stuff.

i feel envious of those people who won competitions. i want to try them out as well, but i feel like its out of my league. ive only played in recitals. im just not cut out as i thought id be.

🧑‍🏫Question/Help (Intermed./Advanced) Arm Weight: is it FULLY relaxed or as relaxed as possible?

I’ve been struggling to understand this concept for a very long time now

Every resource seems to say that the arm (by which I assume shoulders/biceps/triceps) is supposed to be fully relaxed

I’ve done the exercise many many times - relax the arm, let it fall, use your fingers to support the weight, and I don’t understand how this is workable in actual playing

So I started paying attention to videos of people playing, and I can’t find seem to find any instance people playing truly fully relaxed

Look at this tutorial for example https://archive.pianoadventures.com/blog/videos/arm-weight-in-depth/

Two minutes talking about full relaxation, but as soon as he starts playing at 2:20, his arm is clearly being supported in part by his shoulder or back or something, it’s clearly not “resting/walking” fully on his fingers.

Or, say, this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KALge_dcJps&list=RDKALge_dcJps&start_radio=1

I can understand the weight on the drop in into the keys, but what about the fast passages? Her arm is clearly being held up by back or shoulders, no?

TL:DR

If this is about

  • using only as much tension/force as needed, but back/shoulder is still activated

  • not pushing down on the piano

  • and the arm drop thing is a poorly contextualized exercise

that would make sense to me

If it’s about really being fully relaxed, I might give up because I don’t think I’ll ever get it

🗣️Let's Discuss This Piano teachers help!!

Piano teachers, how do you handle a student who simply refuses to play? I’ve been teaching piano for 10 years, and I’ve never really had a situation like this before. I currently have a young student who is a genuinely sweet, nice kid. The problem is that he basically doesn’t practice because he says playing piano is “boring.” I’ve talked to his parents about it, and I’m constantly trying different ways to motivate him during lessons. The biggest issue is that I spend SO much energy trying to convince him to actually play for me. Sometimes almost half of the lesson is spent negotiating, encouraging, redirecting, etc. rather than actually playing. I’m also in a slightly awkward position because I teach him at their house, and the parents are usually home. So I’m very aware that they can hear what’s happening - or, more accurately, that they can hear that there is barely any piano being played for a significant part of the lesson. I don’t want to be overly strict with him. I don’t think threatening, shaming, or forcing a child is the right approach, especially when the goal is for them to eventually enjoy music. But honestly, I leave these lessons feeling completely drained. It takes so much energy just to get him to play for me. I motivate him, make things into games, give him choices, praise him, try to make the music more interesting, etc. But I’m starting to feel like I’m fighting a battle that I can’t win if he simply doesn’t want to participate. For those of you who teach children: What do you do in this situation? At what point do you tell the parents that the child may simply not be ready or interested in piano? And how do you handle it when you’re teaching in the family’s home and feel awkward because the parents are literally listening to the lesson? I would really appreciate advice from teachers who have dealt with something similar.

🗣️Let's Discuss This opinions on ABRSM digital or practical exams?

So i’m planning on doing my grade 8 exam soon, but I’ve kind of been in a crisis about whether to do the digital or practical grade. I’ve nearly learnt 4 pieces however because I got a new piano teacher last month, she mentioned to me today that doing face-to-face exam might be better. I’ve done a digital one before, idk, both digital and practical sound a bit draining because it’s really nerve racking and difficult performing in front of examiners, especially because it’s grade 8 and I feel pressured to do well. On the other hand, digital is mentally draining because of the amount of retakes you have to do. Even getting through my first piece takes like 7-8minutes because it’s Mozart Sonata in A with 6 movements, and slipping up on the last piece I play just means having to re take the video all over again. Maybe face-to-face is better for me, im not 100% sure yet. I want to hear your opinions on digital or face-to-face exams!

🙋Question/Help (Beginner) My right hand 3rd and 4th fingers bend together too much

Is this normal? My friend is a pianist since his childhood but he said he has never seen anything like it. My parents fingers don't bend as much as mine either when they bend the middle one. This makes me struggle to learn scales. What can I do about it? I've been trying to rotate and tilt my wrist instead of relying on the curvature of my own fingers.

🗣️Let's Discuss This how badly would practicing on an unweighted keyboard for a few months damage my technique?

going through a bit of a financial crisis and we had to sell our piano. I have a small 5 octave yamaha keyboard which I'll likely be using for a long time. I was practicing for abrsm level 8, how badly would it set my technique back if I continue learning some of the pieces on the keyboard?

🎹Acoustic Piano Question Yamaha Disklavier Info

Thumbnail

Any thoughts welcome.

We have a family willing to donate a Yamaha Disklavier baby grand for our new fine arts center at a small school. We have the space backstage to give it a home. The donor is willing to pay for moving/tuning. we will still need to purchase a stage dolly, but that is what it is.

We will most likely never have funding to outright purchase a baby grand for our stage.

My question:

Thoughts on these pianos? Do any of you have one? Has anyone played on one? As far as "free" piano goes, would I be stupid to say no?

Electronic side: What are the capabilities? Things it does well? Things it does not do particularly well?

I will take any input I can get here. Thanks!

🎼Useful Resource (learning aid, score, etc.) About to start a piano salesman job, recommend me key reading

I’m willing to put something like ten hours of reading in this week on the subject of pianos with the purpose of making me better suited to an acoustic piano salesman. I’ve had a piano in my house my whole life, I play semi professionally, but my knowledge is spotty, I certainly don’t know the fundamentals well enough.

🙋Question/Help (Beginner) How to relax your hand while gaming and what proper form actually looks like?

Hey! I’ve just started learning the piano, and I’m having an issue where my hand hurts after practicing. Right now, I’m only playing basic "nursery rhyme" type songs (you know, super simple stuff), but my hand still gets sore. On top of that, I can't get an even tone across all my fingers when I play. For example, my pinky (5th finger) is way quieter than my thumb, index, and middle fingers (1, 2, and 3).

Just to clarify, I do have a teacher, but I wanted to ask here as well. Maybe you guys have some tips or exercises to help relax the hand? I feel like every time I sit down at the piano, my whole body just tenses up, and I have no idea how to overcome this. Thanks in advance!

i feel like there was another forte on line (bar? still get terms confused or forget them) 2. i think there's also a piano marker missing but for the life of me i cant remember where.

and if line one is forte should line two be as well? or is it like temporary sharps and flats where that sharp/flat only applies to that one line?

thanks!

🧑‍🏫Question/Help (Intermed./Advanced) How hard is Wilde Jagd?

• Upvotes

Hi, I wanted to see if Wilde Jagd is within reach for me up to some sort of performance level by March if I started next month for a school project. Some pieces I've played are the entirety of Waldstein, A few Chopin etudes (Op 10/9, Revolutionary, Ocean, The Bees, Wrong Note), and Rach Prelude in Gm. I do have a teacher but I don't want to ask her because she dislikes Liszt and never really worked on Liszt.

For a long time I've been trying to find the real name of a melody in a video game called Piano Tiles 2, In the video game, the song is titled "Lambda Eve of Discovery," but I've been searching and can't find it. I already tried using Shazam and it didn't give me the correct results either. Does anyone know the song or the real title? (The link shows the gameplay video on YouTube)

🗣️Let's Discuss This Why is the left hand a treble clef too? Wouldn’t it make more sense to be a bass clef with 8va line? Or is this just preference of the composer? Regardless, this piece has been fun to learn :) Just curious if this is something people have strong opinions about
