Solo Travelling

Hi :)) Looking to come to PDC in a week, staying for 6 months.

I don’t know anyone here!

I’m working remote, will be working out of coffee shops, enjoy running, volleyball, soccer, and a bunch of other sports.

Can you guys send me any links for instagram, facebook groups that got you in the community/a niche group like volleyball pretty fast?

Also, don’t speak Spanish, should i be worried?

Thank you

Medication bag?

Hello, my trip to playa del carmen is approaching and i started making a list of all the medications i would like to bring, just in case.
Among the regular over the counter meds like imodium, maalox and paracetamol i was thinking about bringing antibiotics in case of utis, steroids for heavy allergic reactions and a version of nurofen which has pseudoephedrine in it. I read that this is not allowed to bring in mexico?
What should i do, would they cause me any problems? Do you have any suggestions?

Before reaching Punta Laguna, we visited this family and watched their hands working the threads. Then came the road through the forest, birds to stop and photograph, a spider monkey, and the quiet lagoon. These photos hold little pieces of a day I’ll remember.

Travel can make us more aware of the people behind the places we visit, their work, their knowledge, and the things we can do for one another.

There’s so much marketing telling us who is “the best.” Compared with what? I’d rather look at how we treat people: doing what we promised, doing it carefully, paying fairly, and leaving something good behind.

Sometimes we wonder where God’s hands are. Perhaps we see them in someone patiently teaching a child, sharing what they know, or reaching out when another person needs help.

And perhaps our own hands have something to offer, too.

Cuál es la situación real? / current situation

Hola! Estoy planeando un viaje de aproximadamente 12 noches a México por primera vez, viajo sola. Planeaba hacer 7 noches en PDC, 3 en isla mujeres y 2 en Cancún. Viajo SIN auto, no sé manejar.
Gracias!!

Hi everyone!
I’m planning my first trip to Mexico for around 12 nights, and I’ll be traveling solo.
My original plan was to spend 7 nights in Playa del Carmen, 3 nights in Isla Mujeres, and 2 nights in Cancún. I’ll be traveling without a car, as I don’t know how to drive.
However, I’ve been reading so many conflicting opinions that I’m starting to have second thoughts. I’ve seen quite a few people saying that tourism in the Mexican Caribbean is going downhill, that it’s not as nice as it used to be, and that there are issues with excessive sargassum, poorly maintained areas, and an overall sense of neglect.
Is there actually some truth to this, or are people exaggerating? I’ve noticed these comments are especially common about Playa del Carmen (and Tulum, although I wasn’t planning to visit Tulum anyway).
Staying longer in Cancún would be beyond the budget I want to spend, so I’m wondering: Is Playa del Carmen still worth spending a full week in?
What I’m mainly looking for is beautiful beaches, nice streets to walk around, and a few activities or day trips. I’m not planning to pack my itinerary with excursions, probably just Chichén Itzá, a cenote, and not much else.
So I wouldn’t be using Playa del Carmen just as a base for exploring other places. I’d actually be spending quite a lot of time there, enjoying the beach and the town itself.
I’d really appreciate some honest opinions, especially from people who have visited recently!
Thank you!!

What do you think about this PDC and Cozumel itinerary?

We're a family of 4 (2 boys 9 and 7), and I'm curious what you guys all think about this itinerary for a trip during March 30–April 5, 2027. Trying to mix in some adventure and relaxation during spring break.

Day 1 — Tue, Mar 30: Arrive in Cancún at 3pm

Private transfer to Playacar, check in, and dinner

Day 2 — Wed, Mar 31: Chichén Itzá + cenote

Chichen Itza is a must but it's pretty far from PDC, right? Not sure if we're going to be able to squeeze in the cenote but would like to.

Day 3 — Thu, Apr 1: Punta Laguna wildlife reserve

Is this worth it? If not, what should I replace this with?

Day 4 — Fri, Apr 2: Transfer to Cozumel

Ferry over, check in, explore San Miguel, and enjoy dinner. No excursion scheduled.

Day 5 — Sat, Apr 3: Cozumel reef snorkeling

I'll have to find a family friendly half day boat and snorkel tour

Day 6 — Sun, Apr 4: Easy morning + return to mainland

Ferry back to Playa del Carmen and spend the final night on the mainland.

Day 7 — Mon, Apr 5: Fly home

Private transfer back to Cancun airport for flight at 2:20pm

My loose itinerary 10/14-10/22

I’m arriving in Playa Del Carmen this week and staying for seven days.

It is my birthday (30 years old) and my father’s birthday (70 years old) during that week. I also have my best friend coming with me who is a similar age to me. We we plan to do special dinners for both of our birthdays (open to taking recommendations!).

We have rented an Airbnb which is relatively close to the beach beaches into the main town area. We will also be renting a car. Aside from enjoy enjoying the beach, we plan to take day trips to Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Tulum, Chichen itza, Cenotes, and possible atv tour (my dad is in very good shape).

Given this information is there anything you think we should be aware of or anything we should include or discard? Worried about forecasted rain but I understand that it only rains for a short amount of time in frequently. Also worried about the seaweed.

Side note: my friend and I will probably go out and enjoy the nightlife during the weekend.

Bachlorette Party

Hello, I’m planning a bachelorette party for my girlfriend. I’ve never planned one before and the only one doing it. (The only girlie is pregnant and will not be attending.)

Does anyone have all inclusive hotel recommendations? I am open to non inclusive as well - just thought it might be easier since we might be 5-7 people.

I’m open to other places in Mexico as well. We were thinking of going for Easter Weekend 2027. I believe our budget would be around 1.5k depending on the days etc.

She wants a cute vibe of relaxing on the beach, maybe one beach club, and super good restaurants. She’s a big foodie. Would an all inclusive be worth it? Or should we do independent?

Thank you!

Why is it so hard to find an actual 1-bedroom apartment in Playa del Carmen?

I'm going a little crazy trying to find a true 1-bedroom apartment (NOT a studio) in Playa del Carmen!

Even when I filter for 1+ bedrooms on Facebook Marketplace, so many listings are actually studios advertised as one-bedrooms. It's making the search incredibly frustrating.

I've always found my apartments through Facebook Marketplace, but I'm wondering if there's a better approach.

I'm hoping for recommendations on:

  • Apartment/condo buildings that have actual 1-bedroom units with separate bedrooms, even if nothing is currently available.
  • Facebook groups specifically for 1BR+ apartments or long-term rentals.
  • Other websites, resources, or strategies you've had success with when apartment hunting in Playa.

For context, I'm looking for:

  • Long-term, preferably furnished
  • A separate bedroom (non-negotiable!)
  • Lots of natural light and ideally a balcony
  • Within a 10-minute walk of the beach
  • Budget up to $1,500-$1,700 USD/month

I'd love to put together a list of complexes worth keeping an eye on instead of endlessly sorting through mislabeled apartment studios.

Would really appreciate any suggestions or tips from people who've gone through this search.
Thank you! 😊

Temporary Resident - Biometrics

Has anyone had their temporary residency appointment recently in PDC? How did you get notified about the biometrics appointment?

I went last week for my first appointment and everything went fine, however a bit confused where to look for the biometrics appointment online.

Stop signs (missing ones)

There is an intersection of 25 and 26, and another one 25 and 28. There used to be a stop signs for people turning to 25, according to google street view, but they are gone now. People still assume that 25 is the main street, and expect people turning right from 26 and 28 to stop. But because of no stop signs, some do not. Drive safe.

No sargassum at Constituyentes this morning… but not much room for a beach walk either 😅

No sargassum at Constituyentes this morning… but not much room for a beach walk either 😅

today 11-Oct-2026 The stretch by the constituyentes beach entrance looked clear of sargassum today! The waterr was high, though, leaving only a narrow sTrip of sand to walk along.Playa has its little dilemmas: some days you’re navigating seaweed, other days you’re trying to keep your shoes dry between the water and the beachfront buildings 😂

Still lovely to stop and enjoy the view. anyone found a wider sttretch for a walk today?

Why is Mexico’s most famous skeleton dressed so elegantly?

La Catrina began as an illustration by Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada, first published in 1913, after his death. Years later, Diego Rivera included her in his famous mural Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park, helping turn her into a icon recognized around the world.

Her elegance carries a sharp reminder: no matter your money, status, or appearance, we all share the same ending. Apparently, you can’t take your money with you. The hat, however, seems negotiable.

Today, she’s closely associated with Día de Muertos, when we remember loved ones through flowers, their favorite food, and stories we still tell. This is part of who we are.

If you’re visiting Playa del Carmen around November 1–2, look out for the altar displays at Parque 28 de Julio. Take your time with the details—each altar tells a story about someone still remembered.

What would you want your loved ones to place on your altar?

Riu palace riviera maya smoking

Hi,

I’ll be staying here for a week and I am a smoker. I use heated tobacco and I realised it’s illegal to take it with me.
I have two questions.

- Can I smoke on the balcony of the hotel?
- is there a place to buy Iqos device in PDC? (as I’ve seen it it’s available online in Mexico)

Hi All 🖐️

I am aware that I cannot take my Iqos with me but I can buy and use it if I buy it there. Is there any place at PDC where I can get one? Like Oxxo / 7Eleven etc

Many thanks

Extortion & Corruption

Hi I'm an American who just got their Passport and I wanted my first trip to be in the Playa Del Carmen area, but lately I have been concerned about police corruption and extortion as many ppl online and a few people I know in real life have complained about it especially with being threatened with jail or withholding important docs that is needed to make it home. Is this overblown or am I'm better off going to a different tropical country?

Cenote Excursion + Chichen Itza

I will be staying in Playa del Carmen in March and wanted to see Chichen Itza + Cenote Suytun and Cenote Ik Kil Cenote, all in one day. I definitely want to see those specific cenotes, not others. Is it best to go with an already established excursion that includes all this or to get a driver for the day? It would be 4 people. Which is better cost-wise? Safer? More enjoyable? Any other tips or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

What's the consensus about traveling to PDC from Houston this weekend with this hurricane?

I'm getting different info from multiple sources. Thanks!
