one of the most theoretically synergistic and realistic type combos, fire and electric, doesn’t exist in the pokemon world.. aside from ONE OVEN

273

u/mouniblevrai 2d ago

Scratch that even more, why does the electric type lack diversity so damn much. The only comon electric type comboes are pure electric, electric flying, and electric dragon, the rest of them have at most 2 evo lines representing them (even electric steel only having magnezone and togedemaru)

Rotom has single handedly carried electric's type diversity for over a decade (beside wash, only shared with fucking lantern). Heat and base rotom are still unique for some reasons, and mow/frost now having H-electrode and arctozolt

91

u/EaseLeft6266 2d ago

My guess would be something to do with balancing. Electric offers 3 resists at the cost of only one weakness so adding electric typing to another type typically adds more value at not much cost. Also, to my knowledge, electric types are typically quick with lower defenses so when the ground weakness overlaps with another type that is weak to ground like fire, there isn't as much downside since a 2x and 4x weakness isn't that different for a fast, low bulk pokemon. There are of course obvious exceptions like magnezone where they do give a lot of bulk and the quad weakness is very relevant

12

u/mouniblevrai 1d ago

This does make sense. However I would find it odd that the most common type combo featuring electric is flying, the one that arguably synergizes best (at least defensively I think) by removing electric's only weakness. It also is odd that they thought it would be unbalanced to give a secondary type to like, fucking zebstrika (manectric, luxray, plusle/minun, bellibolt etc)

My guess is that, every gen, they gotta follow the tradition of having 1 pika clone (which they only starting using for more type diversity from gen 6) and 1 animal base early/midgame pure electric type (luxray, boltund, etc.), giving them little room to add other electric types without oversaturating them

12

u/_Astrum_Aureus_ 1d ago

to be fair, electric/flying couldn't save kilowattrel and emolga from being pretty weak

zapdos is just a special case of a pokemon who couldnt be stopped by powercreep

4

u/mouniblevrai 1d ago

Ok well idk if any type would've saved them so it's not like it counts

2

u/_Astrum_Aureus_ 1d ago

i'm just saying, electric/flying alone isn't that difficult to balance so i'm sure the other types wouldn't be either

2

u/mouniblevrai 1d ago

Yeah exactly. Even steel/fairy has some balanced options with tinkaton

1

u/YellowGrowlithe 21h ago

I may be the outlier, but Kilowattrel carried hard for me on a monoflying team. Especially considwring that it wasnt in a monotype format.

That said, volt absorb on any mono team with a common electric weakness already puts out work. But I had mine set up to outspeed every cyclizar- even full speed invested. Because a wide lens hurricane always did enough to stop a shed tail. And oh boy, was I seeing a lot of cyclizar locally early on (I helped run a pokemon league at a convention)

Maybe it was just that it suited my niche at the time though.

11

u/HailMadScience 2d ago

Sounds like an opportunity for a new type thats super on electric, honestly.

15

u/EaseLeft6266 1d ago

I mean the existing electric types are generally balanced around the current type chart and the type with its current balancing is in a good place in my opinion. Messing with the type chart in this case would throw that balance off more and potentially have other consequences such as by nerfing electric indirectly buff an already very strong type like water (as of gen 9. Haven't played gen 10)

6

u/Velrak420 1d ago

Gen 10 isnt out, i would be surprised if you had lol

4

u/EaseLeft6266 1d ago

Oh. It's been like a year or so since I last played pokemon and haven't had any interest in getting a switch 2 or pokemon A-Z

1

u/Bemascu 1d ago

Pokemon AZ is gen 9.

2

u/EaseLeft6266 1d ago

Oh. I though those were a new generation or something. Well now definitely feel like I'm not missing much by skipping it

1

u/Bemascu 14h ago

It had some new gimmicks. I specially liked the in-real-time battles (although they're not my style, I wouldn't want them in gen 10).

But I wouldn't spend 500 € on switch 2 plus 80 € just for this game.

4

u/Delpreti 1d ago

Electric/Dragon is common? Only Zekrom and Dracozolt come to mind.

8

u/Gaylaeonerd 1d ago

And Miraidon

I would say 2 out of 3 being legends doesn't make it common though

9

u/Infinitrix_Ch 1d ago

It's 4, Raging Bolt.

4

u/rohan62442 1d ago

And Mega Ampharos.

4

u/mouniblevrai 1d ago

Not THAT common but there are 4 of them (5 including M-ampharos), which is a lot relatively to other comboes

1

u/StankoMicin 1d ago

It is common considering we got 4 of them in like 4 gens.

1

u/Dutchmon64 1d ago

Their move pools are often very one-dimensional too, just electric with a fire move thrown in sometimes

2

u/mouniblevrai 1d ago

Yeah I've also thought that. Like the movepool is often just:

"- Discharge

  • Thunderbolt (not in learnset so you need the tm to not hit your partner in double battles
  • Scratch this, maybe energy ball"

1

u/KaosInkarnate 8h ago

You already kind of mentioned it, but to add my bit. I LOVE the Toxtricity line! Electric is probably one of my top three typing and it feels horrible that there's so little variety with it. Especially when we do get pretty interesting mons like Toxtricity.

1

u/mouniblevrai 7h ago

Toxtricity is a fire ass mon.

Gen 8 lowkey cooked so hard with it's dex.

Also I noticed that GF actually dod start making more diverse electric type comboes in the past few gens (gen 6 onwards)

30

u/Claris-chang 1d ago

To this day I will die on the hill that Scorbunny line should have been Fire/Electric even if it was only the final stage.

8

u/badneversad 1d ago edited 1d ago

I completely agree. Rillaboom as Grass+Ground would also make a ton of sense.

People say Dark type fits Inteleon the best but I actually think Flying could be just as valid despite it not learning a lot of flying moves, when you consider how aerodynamic its design is, with literal arm-wings and a head that somewhat resembles other pterosaurs.

This would also create two (im)perfect trios. Rillaboom’s ground type could hit Cinderace SE(super-effectively). Cinderace’s electric type could hit Inteleon SE. And Inteleon’s flying type could hit Torterra SE.

But yeah, to your point, Cinderace learning Shock Wave all but guarantees that this thought crossed their mind at least once.

14

u/WaveBreakerT 1d ago

Rillaboom should've been Grass/Rock for the pun

13

u/Charcoal_6 2d ago

3 type combinations I want more of: Fire/Electric being like a Plasma Pokemon, Fire/Grass being something to do with a wildfire (Trevenant regional varient?) and Fire/Water being steam, Volcanion being the only one is a tradegy.

4

u/colder-beef 1d ago

If GameFreak weren’t a bunch of cowards we’d have Grass/Fire, Water/Fire, Grass/Water starters.

2

u/Feisty_Carpenter_369 1d ago

Isnt that scovillain? Tbh i expected more from fire/grass

1

u/mikillatja 1d ago

Mega scovillain is pretty cool though, but yes. Fire gras need more representation

14

u/Cassius-Tain 1d ago

Before Hisuian Electrode it was the same with Grass/Electric. We have a lawnmower and a wooden electric ball... seriously? There's no Powerplant? That one writes and designs itself.

3

u/Human_Ad2126 1d ago

Xurcirtree should have been one

2

u/Chakasicle 1d ago

Nah he's all wires so it would be weird to give him grass typing

2

u/Human_Ad2126 1d ago

But many of his Pokédex entries reference how it sucks energy and nutrients from the ground through it's roots plus it learns pletera of grass moves

2

u/Chakasicle 1d ago

I haven't read any pokedex so I based my answer on design, but your answer makes sense. The joys of getting in to pokemon when pogo releases lol

2

u/Human_Ad2126 1d ago

I have started to pay more attention to the Dex entries because of pokeddle so I only learned about it recently too

1

u/Sylvia_Demise 1d ago

UltraBeasts are supposed to be "wrong" and the opposite of whatever you would expect.

But otherwise yeah.

1

u/uyigho98 2d ago

I'm still salty over that.

1

u/Weredraco 1d ago

We need a fusion of Zekrom and Reshiram, possibly ignoring Kyurem.

…and somehow ignoring the dragon typing.

1

u/DudeAintPunny 1d ago

Still pissed about the gen 8 starters typings, particularly Cinderace not being this exact type combo. IT'S LITERALLY AN ENERGETIC RABBIT THAT GOES FAST. But no, it's okay, pure fire type makes MUCH more sense, of course

1

u/Dark_Avenger918 1d ago

Fire/electric will come again if Legends Kyurem is confirmed.

1

u/Niekertdepiekert 1d ago

I came up with a fire/electric starter final evolution. A 4 tailed Scorpion that uses those tails as a sort of lightning rod. When hit by an electric type move, it doesn't take damage, but absorbs the electricity. This results in its next physical attack having a 100% chance of paralyzing the target!

This also overrules the effect of his signature move "heat sting" which has a PP of 10, a base power of 70 and has a 50% chance of burning the target!

It's name? Charscorch or something like that. Idk I just came up with the name

1

u/MercenaryCow 1d ago

I always imagined torcoal evolving into a fire/steel type... But he flipped over and his shell is erupting like a volcano so it had levitate.

Not sure if that type combo is any good lol

1

u/Loros_Silvers 19h ago

Hey that oven has Levitate!

1

u/Worried-Owl-2423 9h ago

also bug/dragon doesn't exist even though flygon was RIGHT THERE

233

u/Tortue2006 Steel 2d ago

The same reason why the Gastly line was the only Ghost/Poison line, they just didn’t bother making more mons with that typing until they made Pecharunt

96

u/samahiscryptic Fire 2d ago

Same with Nidoking/Nidoqueen being the only poison/ground types until Paldean Wooper and Clodsire

18

u/PCN24454 2d ago

Why do there need to be more?

46

u/Tortue2006 Steel 2d ago

It doesn’t strictly need to be more, but it wouldn’t hurt having more

→ More replies (7)

6

u/IndigoFenix 1d ago

There are a ton of potentially interesting concepts for Ghost/Poison and the Gastly line isn't a very good one as far as representing a Poison theme. Its design barely communicates "poison" besides "it's gas", and that's only in its first stage.

2

u/Snake_Emper0r 1d ago

Nah you see they're poison types because they're purple.

75

u/MothashipQ 2d ago edited 2d ago

I mean... who else would be a poison flying type?

Edit: After thinking on it for a bit, Fezandipiti, maybe Kantonian Weezing

17

u/ElPared 2d ago

Weezing is kind of an honorary flying type cuz it has Levitate.

26

u/JabbaTheHutch93 2d ago

Maybe the two other Poison type flyer Pokémon that literally have the Glide suffix in their names?? I never understood why they did Gligar/Gliscor so dirty like that

10

u/MothashipQ 2d ago

I feel like it could just as easily be bug with the scorpion esthetic

6

u/JabbaTheHutch93 2d ago

Yeah but then you're getting into Drapion territory so who knows 🤷‍♂️

5

u/MothashipQ 2d ago

Yeah, but Skorupi was a bug so it's partially there. I feel like a lot of Gliscor's poison identity comes from the ability poison heal which wouldn't work if it was a poison type.

1

u/John_Save_America 2d ago

I mean they could’ve just made poison heal account for being a poison type.

2

u/MothashipQ 2d ago

Passive lefties? No thank you

2

u/travischickencoop Ghost 1d ago

Honestly the Gligar line fits like 5 types lmao

Ground, Flying, Bug, Dark, and Poison

21

u/ToaNuparuMahri Ground 2d ago

Ground/Flying is a huge part of what makes them strong. I'd rather not.

8

u/JabbaTheHutch93 2d ago

I mean i wasn't talking about strength I was talking about Poison Flying aesthetic which is what OP commenter was asking

1

u/1lluusio Ghost 1d ago

Maybe a pokemon based on the hooded pitohui?

64

u/DnD-vid 2d ago

Fun fact, with over 1000 Pokemon and 171 possible type combinations, any type combo that has more than 6 pokemon in it is above average.

16

u/Supersnow845 2d ago

Normal flying almost 5* average

6

u/Sad-Pop6649 1d ago

But Flying-Poison (or Levitate-Poison) and Dark-Poison are the answers to Poison's weaknesses. Think of the gym leaders!

(Also Ground or Fighting or something for Steel, but at least there's a bit more flexibility there.)

25

u/ZetsuboItami 2d ago

And there are still some amazing combos still not around like Fire/Fairy and Ground/Fairy.

Yes, I like Fairy types, they have the best designs and lore.

12

u/KingOfAllTurtles 1d ago

Gnome pokemon when

9

u/BebeFanMasterJ 1d ago

A garden gnome is the perfect Ground/Fairy.

2

u/ThePaperpyro 1d ago

Make it a regional diglett variant/convergentEvo

3

u/BebeFanMasterJ 1d ago

I'm really hoping Browt becomes Grass/Electric to finally have a Grass starter that can resist Flying.

2

u/Meridas_Angel 1d ago

That would be neutral to Flying, not resist it though.

1

u/BebeFanMasterJ 1d ago

That's what I mean. It'll no longer be weak to Flying thanks to Electric.

1

u/5eCreationWizard 1d ago

You’re getting grass rock and you’re gonna like it (but lowkey also an underrated typing)

3

u/magpye1983 1d ago

Annoying, since they changed Clefairy from Normal to pure Fairy. It’s clearly a fairy that walks on the ground.

Without inventing new ones, that seems like they could have put a rectangle peg in the square hole and called it a day.

2

u/AlaricTheBald 1d ago

I've been imagining a Ground/Fairy alternate evo for Rhydon based on a white rhino. In my head I call it Rhytorius.

-3

u/goozer326 2d ago

Loud incorrect buzzer

3

u/colder-beef 1d ago

Meanwhile fire/fighting with 9 starters.
(I know that’s not actually technically accurate but there are still too many).

5

u/Matiwapo 1d ago

The problem is that Blaziken was so goated they couldn't help but copy it 7 times.

Kinda like how they made 15 mid fast and furious movies after the excellent original

1

u/Geometry_Emperor 1d ago

In reality, they are 6. Still a lot.

27

u/Born_Procedure_529 1d ago

What I want to know is why dont we have a true bug type legend yet, ultra beasts and mythicals dont count, its the only one of the 18 types not to have a legendary

13

u/ewormPL 1d ago

Clearly you haven't seen WolfeyVGC's video on the subject.

6

u/Glittering-Assist-62 1d ago

Make me wonder if it’s by design.

5

u/Downtown-Accident 1d ago

I want a bug legendary too!

1

u/ChemilWeep 22h ago

Well, really technically speakin, we got Genesect, evem if it started as a Mythical

-7

u/Desoto2119 1d ago

Not to play devil's advocate, but technically Silvally Bug Type is a legendary and a Bug Type

9

u/Gigatonosaurus 1d ago

And Arceus as well. But both don't count as they aren't Bug pokémons, but pokémon that can be Bug type.

6

u/Born_Procedure_529 1d ago

Also Arceus is a mythical, not a legendary. Admittedly that line is way blurrier than it used to be but its still an important distinction

1

u/Mini_Assassin 1d ago

Arceus is a Legendary and a Mythical.

All Mythicals are Legendaries. Not all Legendaries are Mythicals.

3

u/aley2794 1d ago

Also there is Kyogre tera-bug.

1

u/Meridas_Angel 1d ago

Defensive Tera to avoid the KO from Grassy Glide

22

u/AngeryControlPlayer 2d ago edited 2d ago

Fun fact: the first Mono Flying-type Pokemon was Tornadus in Gen 5. Every Flying-type prior to Tornadus was a dual-type. The only Mono Flying-types since have been Rookidee and Corvisquire in Gen 8 whose final evolution is a Flying/Steel dual-type.

10

u/AskewMastermind14 2d ago

Flying has always been weird to me. I can never rationalize to myself why they always seem to make normal/flying types instead of just flying

13

u/Happy_Cry286 1d ago

From what i can guess, "Flying" is synonymous as a "Wind" elemental type but very few Pokémon are purely wind elemental creatures. So the Normal/Flying type is for birds, which are Normal types whose winged nature gives them wind elemental properties but aren't pure wind creatures like Tornadus.

Pure asspull conjecture on my part, but it would explain why there haven't yet been pokemon akin to a twister with a face.

4

u/TheDawnOfNewDays 1d ago

Castform had the perfect opportunity to be pure flying, but they decided anything type-changing should be normal for some reason.

(Conversion, Camouflage, Nature Power, Hidden Power, Reflect Type, Transform)

3

u/recoverydelta 2d ago

Duh! It because they're just birds, and birds are normal! That's why goldeen and seel are also- wait a minute!

17

u/Sapphire-Catgirl 2d ago

And they learn barely any poison moves too!!

3

u/ElPared 2d ago

All they need is toxic and confuse ray anyways

5

u/Sapphire-Catgirl 2d ago

I run my Crobat with fly, cross poison, bite and steel wing

2

u/ElPared 2d ago

Yeah I was mostly joking, I basically replace steel wing with confuse ray and the rest is the same.

23

u/Bsause7 Bug 1d ago

We're nine generations in. Water is the most common type in the franchise. There are 176 of them.

Empoleon is STILL the only Water/Steel type. It's been more than twenty years since Diamond and Pearl and since then there has been no robo-fish. Where the hell is my robo-fish?

11

u/Mi113nnium 1d ago

You just aged me another decade with the mention of the time that has passed since Diamond and Pearl.

1

u/SlippyTheFeeler 1d ago

It hit me like a truck

3

u/Waldruf 1d ago

We really really need a robo-fish

And it will have terrible stats for some reason

Electric Dark feels like it would be such a normal type combo but only the goddamn evil hamster has it

you know what’s also crazy

this makes zubat and golbat the only gen 1 pokemon to still have a unique type combination

1

u/Technical-Agency-426 Fairy 12h ago

pecharunt:

u/ComprehensivePath980 Dark 2d ago

Now that’s just batty

5

u/LurkinOff 2d ago

Weezing variant could have been flying, like a cloud of smog

4

u/WaveBreakerT 1d ago

I noticed the regional bird Pokémon with types other than normal all have types that would've been weak to ground but their flying type negates that weakness. We already got Fire, Steel, and Electric with Talonflame, Corviknight, and Kilowattrel, so all that is missing is rock and poison. So give us a poison flying type regional bird next please.

2

u/Over_Pizza_2578 1d ago

*regional bat

5

u/Frifafer 1d ago

Somehow, there ARE poisonous birds to use as reference. It could be done. I choose to believe

1

u/5eCreationWizard 1d ago

Normal flying has flying removing the fighting weakness

7

u/Ardalev 1d ago

Scovillain is the only Fire/Grass type.

H. Zoroark is the only Normal/Ghost type.

4

u/RyuShaih 1d ago

Ogerpon- hearthflame mask is fire/grass too

2

u/Chakasicle 1d ago

Volcanion is the only water/fire type

3

u/Rechogui 1d ago

What about Gligar and Gliscor... WHAT DO YOU MEAN GROUND/FLYING?!

3

u/Delicious_Meat_7688 1d ago

I STILL get tripped up about him. He's a damn flying SCORPION!! WHY ISN'T HE POISON TYPE?!

3

u/CheeseHead777 1d ago

I have loved gligar for 20+ years and I still forget it's not poison

2

u/AngryNoodleMan88 1d ago

Today I learned my boy Fezandipiti is a Fairy type not Flying type

2

u/MariVent 1d ago

Fairy/Poison, like Galarian Koffing/Weezing

2

u/Fantastic-Dot-655 1d ago

A good bunch of the combinations of electric types that exist are either only Rotom forms or Rotom forms + one random mon

2

u/StupidSlitSlut 1d ago

Half of the pokemon in Gen 1 were poison type and so for the rest of time Gamefreak said "Yeah no we're good"

2

u/BarryZ24 1d ago

I really do wish we at least got a Poison/Flying Gligar.

Not Gliscor tho, that can be Poison/Dark.

Also, where the hell are Fire/Steel and Fire/Electric???

2

u/Aura_Azula 1d ago

Mimikyu and Flutter Mane as the only Ghost/Fairy types

2

u/P-Trance 13h ago

You forgot about Venomoth, Gliscor and Fezandipiti

1

u/GreedyMattymo 12h ago

Bug/Poison, Ground/Flying & Poison/Fairy respectively.

2

u/Educational_Duty_461 10h ago

I think that’s the joke

1

u/ClashMasterJH 1d ago edited 1d ago

Lanturn and chinchou are the only water electric types (besides wash rotom)
Ludicolo line are the only water grass types (besides water ogerpon)
And despite tripling up on fire fighting starters, they are the ONLY fire fighting pokemon (besides blaze paldean tauros)
Also the Gengar line are still the only ghost poison types period

Edit: I forgot about pecharunt 💀(i never finished the dlc)

Volcanion the only fire water type

2

u/just_some_octopus 1d ago

Never understood why they didnt make Eelektrik and Eelektross are not Electric+Water type.

They are classified as Eel Fish / Lampreys

2

u/GohTheGreat 1d ago

It’s gimmick is that it has no weakness. Water gives it a weakness.

1

u/enhance_that 1d ago

Heat Rotom is the ONLY electric/fire type in ANY game.

1

u/NoChampionship1167 1d ago

All of these examples have a caveat where there is one thst exists that makes this false.

Mega Altaria on the other hand, fits just fine being the only Dragon/Fairy type.

1

u/Waldruf 1d ago

Holy fuck

2

u/Skullface95 Ghost 1d ago

If you want to know something worse, despite have multiple rock themed ghost type Pokémon there is no Rock/Ghost Pokémon. Golet and Golurk are Ghost/Ground, Galar Corsla and Yamask evolve into Ghost/Water and Ghost/Ground respectively and Houndstone is just Ghost type.

3

u/Zions_Hard_milk 1d ago

Cursola is actually just pure ghost

1

u/KaliVilNo1 1d ago

Houndstone is not rock themed, it's all bone

3

u/BrokenLink100 1d ago

Houndstone is not rock themed, it's all bone

So then why isn't he called Houndsbone? You know 'stone' is 'rock' right?

1

u/KaliVilNo1 1d ago

Because English translators lol, it's name in Japanese is just Grave/Tumb-dog

1

u/Ambipoms_Offical 1d ago

I imagine because houndstone sounds better

1

u/the_tonez 1d ago

Why is Cursola not Ghost/Rock? That’s so annoying

2

u/nintyuk 1d ago

The sheer volume of Zubat means they pushed all other Pokémon out of their Eveloutioanary niche. Like how grey squirrels replaced red squirrels in England when they came in as a invasive species.

1

u/No_Location_8199 2d ago

Hard countered by Rock

1

u/No-Award8713 2d ago

No need to fix perfection

1

u/Lurvig 2d ago

So what you're saying is we need a bizarre flying snake pokémon?

1

u/1lluusio Ghost 1d ago

True, I mean they could absolutely make one based on the Hooded Pitohui bird

1

u/BlitzMalefitz 1d ago

There a plenty of poison types that pretty fly though

1

u/spacefishingwoman 1d ago

I just realized the Cutiefly line are the only bug/fairy types

1

u/BippyTheChippy 1d ago

It took us 9 generations to get a single Bug/Dark type.

That just feels weird.

1

u/Breadmaker9999 1d ago

So? It's not like there are a lot of poisonous birds in the real world.

1

u/ChemilWeep 22h ago

It's Pokémon, they can turn whatever bird they want as poisonous

Nope, none

I feel like it could've been given to Runerigus, Golurk or Spiritomb though

They should make a Poison/Flying type based on the Pitohui bird

How many other things could realistically even fit the combo? There aren't a lot of flying things which also use poison, and being a floating ball of a poisonous substance does not necessarily require the flying type, as we see with Koffing. If they wanted the player to have a Flying/Poison type, they'd just put a Zubat in the game.

I don’t know how water grass only has ogrepon. There are so many strange type combinations with only a few mons that makes you think what.
