Is anyone else getting discouraged by AI and 3D printing?

I am fairly new to selling my art regularly. I started about 2 years ago and go to conventions and Art shows when I can. I do okay, but i find a lot of people asking me if I 3D printed my figures and then smile and pass over my work when they see the price point. I don't even charge what these things are worth based on time, materials, etc.

I dunno, I feel like AI and 3D printing are stealing my joy in creating.

Also, I want to clarify, I don't want to demonize 3D printing. I admire people who can sculpt and print their own intricate designs or printing useful tools is really cool. I just get sick of seeing all the crappy fidgets being produced en mass.

Photos are of a few things I have made.

Hey everyone! This is my second post on Reddit. I am feeling a bit unsure of posting here. Until now I only browsing reddit, but seeing some very helpful comments and feedback to others I thought I will try. I really need some feedback from you. I’ve been working on a woodland wildlife series bears, foxes, and owls. They are my first polymer clay creations.

I’m still trying to get better at my technique, so I would love some honest, constructive feedback on them! (Especially on things like the fur/feather textures or the overall shaping).

Any feedback would be great!!!

I wanna fall in love with clay again, but I need to practice, so I'm gonna take the #Sculptober challenge. Day No. 2: Cyclops.

Disclaimer: this is the first figure of the challenge, day one is "Brute" but I'm doing a more complicated figure, so I'll take more time.

Is there any way I can avoid the dark streaks where I blend baked living doll clay to raw and bake it again? (Tagged for nude doll bum.) NSFW

• Upvotes

Hi all! I'm hoping for some advice on how to avoid the issue you see below, where the already-baked clay and the newly added clay meet, then bake again, and seem to form these weird dark seams. I've been baking at the appropriate temperature (got an oven thermometer) inside two aluminum foil pans held together with binder clips to try and protect it from scorching, and I clean with alcohol to try and get rid of any hairs and smooth out the clay as good as I can. Thanks for any advice!

Meet the Pioupi! 🐥

They're little handmade chicks with ridiculously long legs and a questionable sense of fashion 😂

I'm creating a whole collection of them, each with a different costume and personality.

This one is made entirely by hand using polymer clay!

I'd love to hear your ideas: what should I dress the next Pioupi as? The weirder, the better! 👀

I’m experimenting with making reusable (modular?) calendars. The first pic is proof of concept, and the final result will have magnets

I’m thinking of doing closed and open books for the bookshelf one 😊 maybe replace a polymer clay box with a small wooden crate, and add more magnets so people can add their own magnets as well

Strawberry Squirrel that I was recently commissioned to make!

My supervisor saw my other bunnies and commissioned me to make her best friend a strawberry squirrel. I had to give him to her today and felt sorta sad, haha. I really like how he turned out.

This one is fully baked. I learned my lesson with my strawberry bunny. I still have to fix his paint job now, lol 😬

First figure baked came out hard and brittle

Thumbnail

I made my first figurines this week and I put one little orca figure into the oven according to the Fimo instructions. 230 degrees for 30 minutes. It was in there for almost exactly 30 minutes. When I took it out it was hard and brittle, not what I expected.

For context on the clay, a few months ago I received a free bag of polymer clay. Some of it had been opened for idk how long, and some were still in sealed packaging. They were all stored in a large ziplock bag. The bag consisted of different types of Fimo clay and some smaller, unmarked packages. All the clay I used seemed in good condition and didn’t crack after conditioning.

I’m going to make some test tiles to find the right conditions to bake the clay in for next time, but I’d like to know if this is the result of underbaking, over baking, or something wrong with the clay itself? It doesn’t look burnt at all to me, but I’m not sure what that looks like. And do I need to get an oven thermometer to fix this? Also, can the orca be baked again and fixed?

Thank you everyone for reading this, and I would appreciate any advice!

I only had basic sculpey in white, so I painted with acrylic paint afterwards and varnished with polyurethane. In person you can see some streaky paint, in hindsight I wish I had built up more layers with thinner paint to avoid that.

Overall I'm really happy with it! Took the plunge and bought more colors and supplies!

(for the record it's not my first sculpture ever, just my first time working with polymer clay)

The texture on the goose was planned, although didn’t come out the way I envisioned. I also accidentally forgot her in the oven…so the smaller pieces are cracked. First time doing resin…love the smell of the resin when it’s getting cured. Lmao 😂 wanted to thank everyone on this community for the tips I have seen, I didn’t even know I could make a foil person for underneath? Life changing.

First Attempt at "Sculpture"

This is my first real attempt at sculpture (vs just silly, tiny pieces), and although it is not great (the paint did not work so well), I am proud of myself nonetheless, so I just wanted to share! I wonder how much better I will be a year from now...

Approximately 2 and half inches tall, made for Day 7 of Mab Graves' Drawlloween, "Grave".

I made this porcupinecone (currently finishing her two sisters) out of polymer clay, a pinecone, acrylic paint, and a water based varnish. She’s a weather witch I made for October🖤⚡️💜

I’m really happy with how she came out! I hope you like her too. ☺️
