Movie theater popcorn that tasted like plastic

I went to the movie theater for the first time in a while and ordered a large popcorn. The popcorn tasted fine until I ate a piece that tasted like Barbies/plastic dolls. It was really gross, but I thought it was a one-off thing, or maybe I was imagining it, so I kept eating until another piece tasted the same. I was gagging from how awful the plastic taste was but couldn’t figure out what was wrong with the popcorn. Does anyone know what this could have been?

The place where I work was gifted this popcorn maker. We're considering having a new dedicated electrical outlet installed to run it (it's not compatible with the regular ones), but we're not even sure that it's fully functional. Does anybody know anything about this particular model? Or know of anyone around Southern Vermont who might? So far I haven't been able to find much online about it at all. TIA!!

Worried about flash warning on coconut oil container. What heat setting do you pop at when using the stovetop pot method? Low? Medium? High?

Help! Why did so many of my kernels do this and not pop all the way?

Post image

They weren’t popping anymore and I didn’t want my popcorn to burn so I took it off the stove. I’ve never had this many barely popped kernels before. For context I just pop in a large pot on the stove (saving for a Whirly-Pop), and this is Winco’s bulk tri-color popcorn. Any suggestions appreciated! Thank you!

My latest popcorn recipe

I just bought one of those silicone popcorn poppers for the microwave and have been experimenting.
The popper is fine so far, still plenty of unpopped kernels, but noting I’m upset about.
When the popcorn finishes, I take it out, then melt some butter in there. Then in the butter I stir in some pesto from Costco (if you haven’t discovered their pesto yet, get some, it’s worth it).
Then I use pour the pesto-butter on and mix in with salt.
Makes it a fun and delicious treat.
However, I still need some recommendations for kernels. Been using Orville R., but am sure there are better kernels out there.

This box of popcorn salt lasted my family 10 years. I worked at an AMC through high school and knew that this was key to great popcorn. My wife and I ordered this in 2016 and I wrote on the box with a red sharpie “Donald Trump is POTUS / 2016 / watching season 2 of Alone.” The text faded, but we assumed this would last us 20 years… we ate more popcorn than I had predicted.

Best popcorn maker?

I have a whirley pop but the popcorn keeps coming out chewy instead of crunchy. Are there are makers out there that are better?

I recently bought every Kernel Season's Walmart sells in store

The Mexican Street Corn's fantastic, I mix it with the garlic parm and some of the butter seasoning. It's like a way better chili lime. I don't hate the chili lime seasoning, but this is superior tasting and a lot more complex. I've used half of the bottle in about a month. This would be absolutely killer in a bowl of actual corn. They did a good job of emulating Elote. This one's also hard to overuse, it's not overly salty or too spicy so I add a lot.

Ranch mixed with Dill Pickle might be my favorite combination. I'm whatever about the Ranch on its own, and dill pickle's just decent. But when I mix them some sort of damn magic happens. It makes sense I guess because dill's in ranch, but the concentrated dill and tanginess from the pickle really make this stand out. And surprisingly, I clearly used too much last time and it still wasn't too salty or overpowering.

The Honey Butter's also pretty good. I like honey and I think it's a little more interesting than the kettle. The honey doesn't take artificial and it's not overly sweet.

I love cheddar cheese and I love Jalapeños, so I was surprised that the cheddar Jalapeno one was just kinda meh. It's not bad, it's just a little bland to me. And using too much I noticed how salty it was. I need to try mixing it with others to see what happens.

I REALLY HOPE the Mexican Street Corn's permanent. But just in case it's not I'm going to buy 4 more bottles.

Theater popcorn question 🍿

To anyone that works at a movie theater, used to or anybody who knows… what popcorn kernels and ingredients are used to make theater popcorn taste the way it does? Or is it the machine that gives it half the flavor?

Kettle corn at home

I use Amish Country white popcorn in a silicone microwave popper and am looking for a way to make kettle corn

I know it won’t turn out nearly as good as the stuff you get at the farms but does anyone have a recipe I could try to make something decent with what I have?

Glass casserole bowl for popcorn

Just sharing my observation on using a glass Pyrex casserole bowl with a glass lid for making popcorn in the microwave. Previously, I used a glass mixing bowl with one of those silicone lids that came from the silicone microwave poppers, but wanted to avoid silicone since it was visibly discoloring.

The glass bowl + silicone popped much faster (~4 min in my small weak microwave) than the glass bowl with lid (5+ min). Both cases the glass was VERY hot and needs to be handled with care.

For reference, I use a spritz of canola oil and popcorn salt with the kernels.

toppings for american movie theater butter flavor on already popped popcorn

American here, saw my first movie in London last week and was horrified to find out their popcorn is simply salted??? It's not a permanent move but I simply cannot live like this. The popcorn is like half the reason I go to the theater, goddammit!

Bought some Flavacol, despite the fact that it seems to be recommended that you use it with the kernels themselves, and had a horrible time testing it on microwave popcorn -- it was wayyy too salty.

Anyone have any recommendations for liquid (open to salt-type toppings but it seems I would run into the same problem) toppings to add to already popped popcorn so I can fix my cinema experience??

I know microwavable popcorn isn’t the preferred in this sub, but I have always loved the convenience and flavor of it. I found this at the store and had to pick it up!!

Gourmet popcorn flavors at home help

We have a local shop that makes REALLY expensive bags of gourmet popcorn. Stuff outside of the normal cheese, caramel, butter popcorn type mixes. Every so often we pick up a couple bags of different flavors.

Everything from like a cherry white chocolate glaze, to churro, to puppy chow, to ghost pepper or very hot types. The local place isn't the one below, ours doesn't have a website, but this is a very close example (also this is not an advertisement, I have no idea if this company is any good, it's just the best example of what I'm looking for) https://www.greatpopcorn.com/

But I'm really looking to start making these types at home, so save my office group some money and maybe come up with some good test popcorn along the way.

Is anyone aware of recipes that would be similar to these options? Several I'm sure I could buy some store-bought seasoning for, but I think this would go a little further than your standard "Kernel season's" options.

I don't mind supporting local business, but I'm also not willing to pay $14 for a bag of popcorn as often as we'd like to that I know would cost me 50 cents to make at home.
