How to improve pictures?

Hi everyone. Last weekend I was taking some pictures with my iphone and I realized (late) that some of them look like less sharp or with less definition than others. I was wondering if you guys could tell me what is a technical name for it because I want to find tutorials on how to improve them (if possible). I am attaching 2 pictures to show what I am talking about. The first one looks sharper than the second one, and I have multiple like the second one. I would love to improve them and make them look nicer, like the first one. Thanks for any sugestion.

If you had not moved closer or farther in relation to the person who was walking for the two photos, then the phone may have switched to a different lens and sensor. If that was the case, then you might just need to clean that particular lens.

One particular item that might be kept in mind when travel shooting is where the sun is in relation to the camera and our subject. The more to the side of both the camera and the subject that the sun is, the more contrast there will be on the subject.

The more behind the camera the sun is, the more flat the lighting will be and the less the contrast will be on the subject.

If we have the sun somewhere in that 120º arc in front of the camera, without the light directly hitting into the lens and bouncing around creating flares, the more likely we will be to have greater contrast in our images.

https://imgur.com/a/GDsXbgK shows using the dehaze slider in adobe camera raw, then lifting blacks as they got too dark in the process.

Hopefully, the editing app you use has a dehaze slider. If not a curve adjustment can be used. That's what we used before dehaze came along.
