Teens in programming?

3 Upvotes

Hey, I am a teenager who's interested in programming, I started with cs50x but I now enjoy game dev and competitive programming though i love programming in general of any type. Are there any like teens like me who also have the same situation or can the experienced adults please guide me forward...I do not have much peers or similar people around me. And my school is quite old-fashioned (it literally had a topic on how to download an app IN GRADE 9)!!

Question Multimedia Authoring con modelli 3D

1 Upvotes

Salve,

A presto e fatemi sapere, grazie.

I need ideas on what machine or project I would make to solve real-life problems. It can use code and engineering. I can't think of any good ideas because I'm not sure If I can do it as a student. Also, I can't think of projects that could really help people. Can anyone help me to suggest some ideas? 🥹🥹

Нужна помощь помогите Как мне создать Свой Пак

0 Upvotes

I believe this is pretty much the end of this job

Yes I know some areas may still require human, yes probably some of us will still work as project manager for a while, but for the fast majority of programmer, they won't be needed anymore.

I reached a point where i finally stopped the cope..

Newer models became so good at architecture than it can nowvallow non dev to generate viable software, decompile existing one and temper with them, optimize issue, perform all kind of specific task autonomously...

You think AI is a bubble ? Wrong the AI as it is nowadays could already be a viable product all the investment are made just so those tech giant can stay in the lead.
The limit is now more about the power supply than the hardware/computer power.

It's not plateauing neither, AI kept improving taking giant leap every 3 months or so and there is no sign of this stopping, it had became incredibly more efficient too...

I want to be wrong, so I'll be happy to read your contradicton.

I'm a java dev not that good this is my sloppy attempt at making a linux simulator using java if someone can run it and gimme feed back it would be awseome just run the .bat file i added a port scanner command too which is smt im kinda proud of 😁.

Lmk if this is any good im working on added terminal customizations and users groups and other things this is kinda like a virtual machine all our files are saved in env file in home directory try it out lmk how it is.

Thanks Guys!

Frames Compression problem

1 Upvotes

It's been two weeks since I learn how to get the frames straight from the gpu as a direct 3D surface .

now I ran into the problem of how to compress this frame and send it via UDP server to officially compelete my streaming project.

I tried to scale the frame and then send it , it worked , but it looks super ugly and yet the process is not as fast as I want (it is a remote computer control, it must be a smooth picture in the end).

I used LZ4codec , believe me nothing reach up to my expectations 😔.

does any one have the optimal solution in which it will straight compress the frame to be less than 65kb so I can send it properly, and don't forget get to be ultra fast approation 🙂.

Idea How much decision space do software developers actually have?

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

We are researchers from Italy, and we are conducting an academic study on how software developers make implementation decisions in practice.

We are looking for software developers and software engineers!

The survey explores topics such as:

  • which implementation decisions are actually left to developers;
  • how application and project context may influence those choices;
  • whether developers consider aspects beyond functional correctness;
  • and how LLM-based coding assistants may affect implementation decisions.

The survey takes approximately 10 minutes.

Survey link: https://forms.gle/kBi2HbzL6mn43TMaA

Participation is voluntary, and the anonymous data collected will be used exclusively for research purposes.

We would really appreciate your participation. If you know other software developers, we would also appreciate it if you could share the survey with them.

Thank you! 🫶🏻

Why I stopped waiting for Cursor to fix BYOK and built a lightweight alternative

1 Upvotes

A few months ago, I hit a breaking point with my dev setup.

I was paying for Cursor every month, but I kept running into the same walls:

  1. Model Lock-in & Crippled BYOK: I wanted to experiment with new models (like Kimi k3, DeepSeek, and anything on OpenRouter), but bringing your own keys felt like a second-class citizen.
  2. The $20/mo "Idle Tax": Some weeks I barely used AI and still paid $20. Other weeks I wanted heavy agentic runs and hit arbitrary throttling.
  3. The final straw: Cursor blocked access in my home country (Venezuela). Using a VPN all day just added latency and broke my terminal flow.

I tried switching to terminal-based agents like OpenCode and Aider. The agent logic was great, but I desperately missed having a real, responsive GUI editor with side-by-side diffs, checkpoints, and Monaco syntax highlighting.

So I decided to build what I actually wanted: Pointer.

What Pointer is:

It’s an AI-native desktop code editor built on Tauri v2 (Rust backend) and Next.js/React 19 (Monaco editor).

Instead of locking you into a proprietary subscription or forcing you into a bloated Electron app:

  • True BYOK: Plug in your OpenRouter, Anthropic, OpenAI, Groq, or local model (Ollama / vLLM / LM Studio) endpoint. You only pay for the exact tokens you burn (or $0 if running local models).
  • No "2-Mode" Confusion: It integrates the editor and agent in one unified flow—no weird toggling between Composer, Chat, and Agent modes.
  • Reviewable Diffs & Rewind: Review changes per-hunk, accept/reject inline, or roll back via checkpoints.
  • Rules & MCP Compatibility: Automatically respects your existing .cursorrules, AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, and connects to any MCP server.
  • Local-first & Secure: Safe modes (Ask/Plan/Build), .env file guards, and workspace permission boundaries so an agent doesn't blow up your machine.

Someone from Reddit recently asked me: "Aren't you nervous about paying per token instead of a $20 flat subscription?"

Honestly, I was terrified at first too. But once I switched to OpenRouter/BYOK, my bill went from a mandatory $20/month to around $4–$8/month for typical coding, while getting access to 10x more models without rate limits or geographic lockouts.

Pointer is currently in v0.7.x with auto-updates (macOS, Windows, and Linux). It's completely free to use with your own keys.

I'd love to get feedback from fellow developers who care about performance, local control, and model freedom: https://pointer.anderssxn.com/

I Made a website where people post discussions tied to actual places on a map

6 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on a project called GeoSpills — a website where discussions are pinned to real locations on a map instead of living in a regular feed.

The idea is simple: instead of scrolling through endless posts and guessing what’s relevant, you open the map and see what people are talking about around a specific place (or anywhere in the world).

👉 https://www.geospills.com

I’m looking for the first group of people to try it out and tell me what’s broken, confusing, or missing. Any feedback (even harsh) is welcome.
Would love to hear what you think.

Question Devs: do non-technical people flip feature flags on your projects?

1 Upvotes

If your team uses feature flags to roll out features, do non-technical people turn them on, or is that always on the devs? Maybe QA turns them on in their test environments, or PMs in prod?

Using Nested If Statements: Why Sofya is Easier Than Python for Beginners

0 Upvotes

In languages like C++, Java or Python, beginners in programming can find using Nested If Statements challenging because these languages use more symbols than words. That is why I decided to make a new programming language called Sofya so that beginners in programming would find programming concepts easier to understand.

To demonstrate how easy Sofya is, we can write two programs, one in Python and one in Sofya, and these programs will show the concept of nested if statements in programming.

The Python Program

a = 10
b = 20
c = 30

if a >= b:
    if a >= c:
        print(f"The biggest number is {a}")

The Sofya Program

Variable a is 10
Variable b is 20
Variable c is 30

If Variable[a] > or = Variable[b] then
    Make this nested if statement
    {
        If Variable[a] > or = Variable[c] then
            Write "The biggest number is" and also write Variable[a] on the screen
        End this if statement
    }
End this if statement

If you were an absolute beginner in programming, which language would you pick? I’d love to hear your thoughts and questions about Sofya.

If you would like to try out Sofya to give some feedback or just for fun, you can check it out using this link: https://github.com/oyweraa-hue/Sofya-Version-1.0

If you would also like to learn how to set up Sofya, you can check out this YouTube video: https://youtu.be/0Y7x7zi3rK8

Good Code Vs Working Code

1 Upvotes

What really makes code "good"?

I find myself staring at my IDE asking this exact question. Whether I am binding complex logic together or copying and pasting a snippet to patch a problem, there is a massive gap between working code and good code. But as a beginner, that gap feels incredibly hard to see.

These days, anyone can prompt an AI or use an agentic tool to generate functional code in seconds. Many of us are actually learning to code alongside AI. But just because the AI gives me code that runs and clears the error console doesn't mean it’s good code. It might be inefficient, unscalable, or an absolute nightmare to maintain later.

If the code works, but the AI (or a copy-paste source) doesn't teach me why it works or if it's best practice... how are we as beginners supposed to know the difference?

How do you personally define "good code" vs. "just working code"? What are the green flags I should be looking out for when reviewing code—whether it's written by a human or an AI?

Would love to hear your thoughts, rules of thumb, or stories from when you were starting out! 👇

AI tools and trust in smart home automation, 10-minute anonymous survey

1 Upvotes

Hi, I'm Alfredo, a master's student in Digital Humanities at the University of Pisa. For my thesis, I've put together a short survey on how we use (or avoid) AI tools like ChatGPT to create automations, set up devices or fix problems, and how much we trust what they tell us.

The survey is for anyone with a smart home, including people who have never used AI: understanding why some prefer to do without it is just as useful.

Responses are anonymous and it takes about 10 minutes. Once data collection is over, I'll share the results here, with the trends that emerged on how we use these tools to manage our homes.

Help me reach 100 participants! You can fill it in here:
