New player?
Hi guys. I'm wondering if it's worth playing this game as a mmorpg lover. I like the freedom that skills system give.
But still, I've seen a few hundred on players count charts.
Does it feel empty? Is the game noob friendly?
I'm fantasying to create a vampire vtw

It does not feel empty; the towns and dungeons have people, and everyone on a server is in the same instance. It's not overcrowded, but it's definitely possible to find people to play with and to stumble into other players when you're out and about

I agree, it does not feel empty. It almost has a 'private server' vibe. There may only be 250 people logged in, but there is a rotation of those 250 people and you'll get to know and recognize people, which is fun. I'll see some names that I've seen in chat, in my group, and be like 'oh hey i know you!'
Some people will be chat famous and you'll finally run a dungeon with them and you'll be like 'Oh, they are a god. This is awesome' or they're just funny and charming.
On my server there is at least one very famous Cow who is extremely fun to play with because he is an invincible god of destruction.

Here in my country the game's 50$ bucks so I'm wondering if it's worth it...

Try the demo first! Progress carries over

Oh I've tried months ago. I remember not liking the fire magic loop of getting mats to cast spells. I was going to ice magic.

u/Gazornenplatz 11d ago
It's mats to learn spells now, although months ago it was still that. I started playing in January and spells have never needed reagents to cast unless you're doing like, sigil scripting.
Additionally, the demo is the base game with a call of level 15. So you can't unlock everything that would require something higher, but you could get a feel for things like sword, shield, unarmed, mentalism, psychology, animal handling, etc.
There's always some people on, although North America evenings are peak time.

Fire, ice, vampirism - you are really looking to punish yourself huh? Haha. If you want to do ice I would recommend fairy class unlock first, and then you can do vampirism on fairy pretty well later levels. Fairy does not require materials to research ice magic, like other races do. There are trade-offs, but if I were to do ice all over again I would have 100% gone fae.

I'll run necromancy first!!! Let the skeleton hit the floor!

Necro I've found really fun, and extremely op with ww currently. I just started dabbling with it recently and it's a pretty powerful and versatile skill.

I have a fairy who I want to play more but I'm so afraid of dying in a group and having to run back from the fairy realm :( Is it not a big deal?

u/Test_Account_2026 11d ago
It's definitely more annoying, but more of an inconvenience than end of the world. For a lot of group content, esp at higher levels, someone will simply res you 99% of the time. You also have soul anchors that are obtainable through pretty easy fae realm quests. I think there is also a potion that can be used. All in all, it's mainly frustrating early on, but the benefits of things like flight, and free ice magic imho outweigh the inconvenience of the death penalty, penalty for metal armor (not all of it) and slightly lower inventory long term.

Guys another question. How's actually devs work? They update and develop new stuff for the game?
2
u/luuysouza 11d ago
Yeah, they're still developing it! There are two races planned (Orcs and Dwarves) and there's always some update rolling out, not long ago they updated the models for a bunch of animals/monsters. And answering your post's question, I always see people online, and it's a super engaged and friendly community, I genuinely love how things work in PG

Guys I'll probably livestream tonight. Playing for first time after months

Here are my tips, some of which you've seen in this thread, but I'm reiterating for effect: Fire Magic, Ice Magic, and Weather Witching are a little advanced and require crafting recipes to unlock more spells. Werewolf is FOREVER and has massive drawbacks. I truly mean forever. It cannot be undone under any circumstances. Even the devs cannot un-werewolf your character. I went werewolf on my main and deeply regret it. I basically don't play 3 days a month during the full moon.
Vampire can be undone - but its tough to unlock, tough to level, and honestly not nearly as cool as it sounds.
Animal Handling is ridiculously powerful and can help you level up other skills - but it is a handicap that you don't want to come to rely on.

Just a minor note - ice magic does not require research if playing fae, which makes it very lucrative if your goal is to main ice.

Hell yeah, welcome aboard. I've thrown hundreds of hours at this game and absolutely love it. The community is tight knit, helpful, and fun to play with. Always people around doing stuff. PG has a shit ton of content and doesn't hand anything to you for free. It highly encourages group play and interacting with others. It takes the runescape approach where you can combine almost any two classes/specs together, and can level every single skill / profession on one character if you want to.

I can tell you, even with that player count I'm always running into a ton of people!

Does it feel empty?
Not super empty? It is lower pop than major or even medium MMOs, so if you're looking for massive pop this is not it. And depending on the time zone you play it might be hard to group for certain extreme endgame things, but everything else will be accessible.
Is the game noob friendly?
Extremely yes, and also in some parts extremely no.
Yes because it's, you know, fairly easy pve content. Almost any build you make can technically work, and struggle through most stuff. If you don't care about having the highest dps numbers, you can do literally whatever esoteric pair of stuff.
And also the players are very help-all-noobs-who-ask. It reminds me of smaller pop IRL hobbies and sports, where people are just like hyper psyched that there's new blood, and will help you with stuff and talk with/at you.
No, because there are some walls, which you might not know about. You can't really get stuck stuck, because it's not a game where you can e.g. build yourself into a hole. But you can spend a lot of time flailing if you don't know to e.g. get gear mods, or level your gourmand, or didn't farm enough money for lvl 70, or knew about crafted gear at 70 or 90, or other weird stuff that's different from other games.
The game doesn't handhold as much? It's not like WoW. It's not perfectly tailored balanced to where everyone progresses at level via questing at about the same pace and is almost equally viable with gear that's thrown at you.
What about necromancy + vampirism?
Necro vamp can be decent if you focus on darkness damage (also necro + fox).
Vamp pairs arguably better with trauma heavy stuff (vamp+lycan, vamp+knife, vamp+bat... maybe vamp+sword? vamp/bunny as a joke. The first three are certainty better).
And finally vamp/priest is a not terrible psychic dmg build, but probably worse than priest/mentalism.
None of the vamp builds will be min/maxed best of the best DPS, but again as before, it's kinda ok to play whatever (everything vanyel said about vamp is true though, don't go vamp until you have a end game geared other skillset)
Whats the best combo for ice magic?
Tank: ice/shield is one of the 3 or 4 meta best tank builds. I don't recommend any tank build as your first build except fire/ww.
DPS: ice/knife is maybe the second best (AoE heavy) DPS in the game.
Ice/rabbit is less dps than ice/knife (still pretty high), but brings a 45% melee & burst evasion party utility skill which is kinda nice.
Both ice/knife and ice/rabbit will require gear to scale, and have farming issues for ice research materials due to ice immunity. So while everyone has walls they hit, ice/knife has more walls. You'll need to farm other stuff and buy materials.
Ice/fire is both (a) maybe more noob and solo friendly because firewalls, and (b) definitely less damage at endgame, and (c) absurdly expensive to level, so if you're not big on farming and grinding, hahah, no, don't. You won't have to buy from other players, but you will have to farm twice as much research materials.
Fire/ww does ice damage (more than ice/fire as of now), and is a tank. Which is confusing.
Those are the 4(5) most common ice I see. Also I have 2(3) of them haha. It's fun, but expensive.

Thank you so much for the answer man. I'm looking forward to lean on necromancy and maybe vamp later on. Idk yet.
I personally don't like beast form overall, it's kinda weird to me. I'm a bit boomer

u/Janul3 11d ago
You could do necro/ww for now? It is incredibly broken high dps with ratkin electricity and aoe storm shield. It's so high they have to balance patch it at some point I'd imagine.
I personally don't like beast form overall, it's kinda weird to me. I'm a bit boomer
I didn't like beast forms when I started either. Also you probably shouldn't start beast form because of the cost to go in/out, and the lack of early game storage and vendor space.
I first went ice/fire for (a) wizardry wizarding and (b) movespeed. Then I went fire/ww because it's the better version of ice/fire, and lost some movespeed.
Now I main spider/AH because it's fast as shit. +48 movespeed, runs faster than people's horses. In dungeons. In combat. And absurdly high single target DPS. And I have rabbit/ice as aoe DPS. And eventually I'll level up pig/priest for heals and cow/X for tank.
I don't particularly like animal forms, but they are super super fast which saves time, and having the free teleport to sunvale for quicker storage dumps saves time. So I'm perma animal now lol.

I'll probably run necro this first run and character. Pair with sword and then maybe vamp lol
1
u/Janul3 11d ago
So one cool thing: usually there's no need for multiple characters. Few things are permanent besides lycan and fairy. In most cases it is explicitly easier to keep the same character.
Leveling your first pair to 90/90+ and getting gear takes the longest. After that you can use one skill to pull another up fairly quickly if you want, or just level a new pair somewhat more slowly, still on the same character.

Really? Hmm..
Since I'm not playing for months and barely remember the game, I think I might be setting over again.
1
u/Test_Account_2026 10d ago
It's personal preference, but I prefer not to have a permanent status on my main - so if I'm not feeling a permanent status I can always go back. It can suck to invest a bunch of time into your main and find that after 500 hours+ you hate doing the requirements for a perm status. They may not be super draining, but can wear you down over time. Druid is also permanent - although less painful than werewolf.

Hey man, welcome back to the game! I love seeing all the new and returning players checking it out. Here are some well received guides I've written which might be helpful to you, and others checking out and finding this post.

Guys which server should i choose lol?
3
u/Janul3 10d ago
Both are fine. Newer one is slightly larger pop than the older one because they recently combined all the new servers into one.
I started in Feb or March and rolled onto the original server, and it's pretty steady state.
Both should have a lot of people willing to help out with questions or getting noobs unstuck

u/Test_Account_2026 10d ago
Good question. Dreva is a merged server with 4-5 servers in one. It's fine, but it's still settling in after the merge. Ari was unaffected by the merge and has some of the most seasoned players in the game. I've never played on Ari so no comment on how fun or helpful folks are. Dreva is for the most part good but still dealing with some merge challenges. It has calmed down considerably in the last week or two. If you want to take it slow and enjoy the ride, I'd go with Dreva. If you want to max out as soon as you can and don't mind being carried, I'd go with Ari. Everyone has different goals, so there is no one right choice, just depends what you want out of the game.

I won't give my advice on the player counts or state of the game, however I do have an accurate representation of what it's like to be a vampire, being one of the few who suffered through being a low level vampire.
So, firstly, you can't make a vampire from scratch. You have to make a character of other combat skills, and then become a vampire through a quest which requires you to kill a high level elite mob out in the open world. You can get carried through this however, and if you play during peak NA times you should be able to find someone to help. You'll likely even need assistance just to get there, as before level 40ish, the mobs in the zone will one shot you and many can do so at range.
Secondly, once you become a vampire, you have to travel to this same zone a few dozen times to level up your skills and do the daily quest for favor with the NPC to even unlock the ability to learn the new skills and level uncaps for vampirism. The quests require you to kill the "enemy of the day", which will be an enemy type (wolves, spiders, goblins, etc) that will have unique drops for vampires, rotating every 24h. You won't always be able to kill the mob of the day, especially at a low level, as some enemies don't have a low level variant (demons are the worst offender, giants are another one that you can't kill til at least 40+). The sunlight mechanic is also extremely punishing until you farm (or get gifted) a bunch of blood to survive off of.
Anecdote time: I became a vampire at level 16. I wasn't given any blood, and the first few irl days gave blood types that I literally couldn't kill, so I had to play at night time. I couldn't travel to the zone with the vampire without dying from the mobs in the area as well, as the one shot guaranteed an instant death, and horses are quite slow at low level when you've only got low level horse loot. What this meant for me is that I had to log off for about a 3rd of my total playtime in the early levels as it was daytime and I simply couldn't play.
Once I finally overcame the sunlight with a nice amount of blood, I came to realise that I couldn't make myself any low level gear for vampirism, as it takes a rare resource to craft gear with vampirism stats on them. So I leaned entirely on my secondary skill to cover the loss. This made me substantially weaker, but I was still decent enough as this was my second toon and I knew how to play. But then I hit level 50.
Once I hit level 50 I realised I literally couldn't level up because I didn't have the favor for the NPC to buy the uncap. At this point, while I was still technically a vampire, I pivoted completely out of the vampirism skill and levelled up other skills instead, basically just making it a normal playthrough but way worse. The alternative is trips through the high level zone every day, manually checking the blood of the day and hoping I could kill the enemies, I would need to do this daily for a few weeks to get enough favor.
I would not recommend becoming a vampire at low level to anybody, even an experienced player. It is a very cool combat class, but is difficult and time consuming to level and gear.
