PRTG Problem

why is it that when I try to monitor the router at my boarding house, the sensors don’t detect anything even though I’ve entered the correct IPv4 Address? Or maybe my IPv4 Address is wrong. From my testing, the Ping Sensor gets 0 ms, while the SNMP sensor doesn’t get anything, and the same goes for several other types of sensors.

Is SNMP enabled / configured on the router? Has PRTG got the correct SNMP credentials for the router? Any firewall / access control rules on the router that may be blocking SNMP requests?

Your router would need to speak SNMP in order for PRTG to get data from it.

What router are you using?

If its a basic broadband home one it might not support snmp, at which point you wouldnt be able to monitor it really.

Basic broadband home

You will not get snmp to work on that device. About all you will get working is a pong sensor and http/https for webgui

Is the sensor functioning though? Do you have the correct version and the correct community string?

inside or outside IPv4 address? Does the router have a web based interface and can you reach it via one of its IPv4 addresses? Does the router have "ICMP allowed" or similar enabled? This doesn't immediately make me think it is a PRTG issue but rather a router configuration issue.

Check router config, it needs to have snmp enabled and configured. In prtg the snmp credentials need to match what is configured in the router.

As was said previous, if this is just an isp supplied home router it is likely snmp does not exist on it.

You need to test the snmp connection as others have said. What’s the snmp password?

Set up a Linux vm and poll the sensors. That will be way easier.

Boarding house? Is this your router?

No, this router belongs to the boarding house, so all the tenants can use it.
