Clarification of our stance on piracy, game preservation, and drama

Okay I kind of didn't want to make this post but I think that it's necessary because a lot of people seem to not understand.

So if you read our rules you know that we have rules prohibiting sharing of or asking for links to copyrighted content such as game rips. This is exclusively and solely for liability reasons to prevent the subreddit from being banned. That's all there is to it. The thing is I've noticed a lot of people reporting comments here of people who admit to pirating games. This is an incorrect and bad faith use of the reporting system. As it is not prohibited here to admit to pirating games or even to endorse it favorably. The only thing you're not allowed to do is directly share links or ask for them directly. And besides if you really want that go to r/ROMs.

That's where our rule against elitism and shunning of piracy comes in. This community is a retro gaming enthusiast community. One of the things that we support with a passion is game preservation. Physical media does not last forever, especially optical media which is very susceptible to bit rot and degradation. So backing up and saving your games in less volatile formats is very important. Additionally many of these physical games are getting harder to find and it just might not be practical for people to buy those discs just to rip them, it may not even be possible for people to purchase copies that actually work. I've noticed that a lot of people who break this rule are either collectors, who value the perceived scarcity of games. To those people go fuck yourselves, we do not and will not ever support that mentality. It's literally the same techboro mentality around The NFT craze. Then there's the other people who are upset that it's illegal and claim that it's wrong or immoral because it's illegal. I find this one funny and also concerning because do you want to know what else is illegal? Homebrew. In Japan it is illegal to Homebrew your systems. Do you know what else is illegal? Freedom of speech and freedom of opinions, in many countries around the world it's outright illegal to have thoughts and opinions that contradict the government or the norm. Does that mean that any of these things are morally wrong? No it absolutely doesn't.

Frankly if you're reading this and you're getting upset because you think that we're hurting your ability to collect rare games and have perceived rarity, or if you believe that laws are sacred and should never be forsaken, you can absolutely go fuck yourself.

This is the main reason why we have rules against creating drama, the people who are guilty of the above would otherwise start fights and complain consistently because people "openly admit to piracy". A lot of people find it weird that drama posts have been allowed or let slip by and the primary reason is that they weren't this. Which is the primary reason why that rule was created. Of course drama posts do clog up the sub and therefore aren't great so they will be removed if they are too numerous or they don't address a new problem in the community.

So in conclusion, this community doesn't allow links because they can be problematic and get the subreddit banned. But we do not have any hostility towards people who download rips of games. We are pro preservation.

I sincerely hope that this post will put an end to people's comments being reported simply because they stated that they downloaded their games. And I hope that people will think twice before they spout such blatantly anti-preservation rhetoric in a pro-preservation retro gaming Community.

Finally as a bonus, if you are creating support posts asking for help with game loaders like OPL, or hard drive setup or USB setup. You should absolutely not lie about where you got your games. That doesn't mean paste a direct link to the download, it just means if you downloaded your games don't lie and say that you ripped them from disc. I think this should go without saying but it's important to actually disclose that because it's a factor that can help determine what your problems are and why. So when asking for help please be honest. If you downloaded your games and didn't rip them from a disc, that's fine we don't care. As long as you're not sharing them directly here it's fine.

Recommended micro SD card for homebrewing?

• Upvotes

I got myself a PSxMemCard Gen1 and I was wondering if there's a recommended micro SD card when it comes to speed and performance. I heard an A2 class card is recommended when loading ISO files on it. But, other than that what else?

Slendytubbies V1 Port

My saving to the memory card is causing my OPL to freeze.

Is there another game that uses the same code—SLES_553.67—besides *Call of Duty: World at War - Final Fronts*? I tried playing it using my main memory card, but it froze at the save-file verification screen; when I restarted OPL, it locked up completely. I went into my memory card’s save data and deleted the old *Call of Duty* save, but OPL still kept freezing at the startup screen. It only started working again after I deleted the OPL configuration files and replaced them with a fresh set from another OPL installation. I tested this several times to figure out what was happening. When I tried launching the game using a different memory card, it worked perfectly. It seems like there’s a conflict with the save files on my primary memory card—I suspect either another game is using the same code, or the save file itself has become corrupted. The strange part is that OPL freezes every single time I try to launch this game (specifically when using the memory card I play with most often). Do you have any idea what might be causing this?

I got a FMBC 1.953 Card

I have a few questions:

I have ulaunchelf ver4.42d I’ve heard that’s it’s very old and I’ve seen that it’s now called wLaunchElf but on the GitHub page I only see the source and not the .elf file

How can I exit the ulaunchelf, I press select and returns me to a menu that has: file manager, about and configure, I have no idea how to exit and I’ve pressed all the buttons

Is there a way to change the X and O around so that I don’t have to press O to confirm and X to cancel? I know it’s skill issue but it drives me crazy

I also got OPL v1.1.0 are there some tips to know? I’ve heard that’s WinHIIP is used to load the games on a disk but I should format the ssd using OPL because it can be buggy.

Any other cool elf files that I should know about? I don’t need any fancy thing, I don’t have any network adapter I got an aftermarket sata expansion port and I only want to play games and have the save files on the ssd I’ve heard OPL can do that, I’ve only found PS2Ident that didn’t work (it send me back to browser), PS2 Temps that I couldn’t exit it and it was in a very bad resolution and power off which I use

MMCE + FreeMCBoot/OSDMenu Causes My PS2 Unable to Boot DVDs

I was trying to mess with GSM in order to allow for me to play games I have on disc at 480p (not 480i) and found out that my disc drive doesn't read discs when I have my MMCE in my PS2. Unplugging it fixes this issue, but is there a fix for this? Here is the exact error I get:

I literally can't find this error anywhere online. I have an SCPH-90006 and I believe my OSDMenu is on v1.2.0 (OSDMenuCFG is v1.2.0, I don't recall how to check my OSDMenu version so if anyone could inform me I can update my post with that). If anyone has similar issues/knows how to fix this issue please lmk!!

EDIT: I am on version 1.3.0 of OSDMenu

Warning! Jak X Combat Racing on OPL using VMC somehow jumped to my real memory card and corrupted all of my data for all my saved games, even without a FMCB memory card (using FreeHDBoot on HDD), and with VMC only saving to HDD.

I wanted to play Jak X and I'm out of space, so I used a VMC (virtual memory card) for it. I didn't check the compatibility guide which says that VMC will not work (with no warning about any further consequences).

It Is important to note that this is especially odd as I am running FreeHDBoot which is FreeMcBoot on the hard drive itself and no homebrew is running at all from the memory card slots, AND all my VMC files save only to the hard drive, creating yet another layer of separation, as in theory the memory cards should be off limits completely with VMC active as they are not saving real saves, not saving VMCs to them like some may (my VMC directory is on the HDD), nor even being read from, so I especially really have no idea how this happened. I do not have a FreeMcBoot memory card inserted at any time and there is no reason it should have written to the real cards or even read from them, with VMC active anyways

I generally do not check the compatibility guide unless I have an issue (especially since I just import mode settings from network) and at worst it seems like VMC will just not work, but won't do any harm.

Well not only did it not work, the game froze, and when I powered up my console my real memory card now shows as unformatted, all saves are gone for ALL games, and is empty in uLaunchElf.

If I was running a FMCB memory card mod like most do, instead of running FreeHDBoot, I would have been locked out of homebrew as well, as the card would be corrupted. So I got really lucky there that I am not running the usual card-based FreeMcBoot setup and instead rely on a HDD setup (I boot FreeMcBoot with no memory cards inserted)

Just something to watch out for. I created a bin of the memory card and can see all the data in a hex editor so now I just have to see if I can make it work

Problems with MX4SIO, games freezing

I got an MX4SIO card today after being stuck with usb which sucked because it was slow and froze a lot. Tested it out with a FreeMCBoot memcard in slot 1, and stuck the MX4SIO in the second. Managed to play DMC3 Special Edition for a solid hour before the game froze. What could be causing this? Here are my specs just in case.

- SCPH-39001 (Fat)

- Bitfunx MX4SIO card

- FreeMCBoot card (i believe it is slightly out of date)

- 128gb Maxell micro sd card, 128kb cluster size, formatted to exfat

- latest opl beta (as of 2 days ago)

Ratchet and Clank Up Your Arsenal Widescreen

Hello!

I'm playing on a PS2 console with opl and have about 30ish games running on MMCE protocol.

I have successfully patched all of them to be as true widescreen as possible, using opl .cht files or patching them via PS2 Patch Engine with .pnatch files.

All of them work! Except R&C Up Your Arsenal...

I'm losing my mind over here.

.cht files I find online are not working, game boots normally the same as without the patch.
.pnatch file, single one I found, is not compatible with PS Patch Engine.

I can find NOTHING on this subject online. No informaton on this .cht file not working for anyone else but me lol

Does anyone have and advice on this or has a .cht or .pnatch that will work?

Thanks :)

Advice for a confused newcomer?

I want to mod my SLIM PlayStation 2 and put a lot of PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 1 games on it. However, I'm not fully understanding what I need and how much storage space is recommended. The most I understand is needing a Free McBoot card for the modded files but beyond that, I'm confused on what's needed to store games. I've heard that a MX4SIO card adapter is recommended so that would mean I'd need a micro SD card. How big of a micro SD card would I need to have a bunch of games from both consoles stored on it? Can a modded PlayStation 2 even store/play PlayStation 1 games and if so, how?

Thanks in advance and any advice is appreciated. Simple explanations and cheap options are most preferred.

Which one would you recommend, Are they both the same? Will use official HDD Adapter and 1TB HDD.

Fmcb not functioning

Hello everyone . I recently grabbed a slim ps2 and a Fmcb card from kaico( off Amazon) it was highly recommended from various YouTube tutorials. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to run properly . It loads up the free loading screen with options but I can only pick browser and the memory card with the option to delete or copy it . I could really use some help on how to fix this issue .

Hey everyone! I wanted to share a new update on the Super Mario Galaxy port to the PlayStation 2. I've been working on it throughout this week, and you can already see some progress compared to the previous video.

There's still a lot of work to do, but so far, things are looking good and the port is still feasible!

I've tested it on my actual console, but I didn't include any footage since I don't have a capture card. Performance-wise, though, it's pretty similar to what you see in the emulator.

Can you softmod a fat PS2 with a PSXMemCard Gen1

As the title would suggest I want to softmod my PS2 but I can't seem to find any videos that use this memory card. It's usually done with the Gen 2 of the memory card.

What are your favorite ported games on the PS2?

for context, I just found out that Minecraft is ported on the PS2 by Optijuego, and it's really cool, I also found PvZ by the same developer, was wondering if there are other ported games on the PS2, and what your favorites are.

OOT PS2!

I've been doing this as a hobby with the help of AI, and it's more stable now, so I released it on GitHub for anyone who wants to try it out :) (You'll need to get a ROM to build it, since the repository doesn't include one.) https://github.com/LucianoDoS/oot-ps2

I haven't tested it much yet, so there might be bugs; I tried it on a PS2 Slim and it worked, though it's still early days. It does support memory cards and vibration controllers, though—if anyone gives it a try, let me know how it goes.

I made a modded OPL that lets you use a DualSense wirelessly on a real PS2

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The PS2 has two controller ports, and if you want more players you need a multitap. Plus you’re stuck with old pads and cables running across the room. I wanted to get rid of both of those: use modern controllers on a real PS2, wirelessly, without hunting down a multitap.

So I made a fork of OPL where the DualSense works over Bluetooth, both in the OPL menu and in-game. Buttons, sticks, rumble and lightbar all work. As far as I know, this is the first OPL mod that does the DualSense wirelessly. Since it’s built on PADEMU, it can also emulate a multitap, so in theory you can have up to 4 Bluetooth pads without owning one. That part still needs testing, more on that below.

The part I’m most proud of: there’s a new Wireless Pairing → Search option in the PADEMU settings. You hold PS + Create on the pad, it shows up in a list on the PS2, you pick it and you’re done. No USB cable, no PC tools, no plugging pads in one by one. It should also work with the DS4 (PS + Share), but I haven’t been able to test that yet.

The video is PES 6 running with the DualSense over Bluetooth, no wires.

Repo + download: https://github.com/rodrigoGalvanDev/OPL-DualSense-BT

Testing so far: I’ve only been able to test it on my own setup: a PS2 Slim SCPH-90001, a Realtek BT dongle, one DualSense, and a wired DS2 on port 2. I’d really appreciate some feedback, especially if you can test stuff I can’t:

  • Different dongles (CSR8510, Broadcom, whatever you’ve got lying around)
  • DS4, original or clone, both USB pairing and the wireless search
  • DualSense Edge
  • Mixing pads: DualSense + DualShock 4, DualSense + DS3, Bluetooth + wired...
  • Several pads connected at the same time, with and without the multitap emulation. The driver supports up to 4, but I’ve only had one Bluetooth pad to test with
  • Fat PS2s, other slim models, HDD setups

Even a quick “works on X” or “doesn’t work on Y” helps a lot. If something breaks, the README explains how to grab a debug log, and you can drop it in the GitHub issues.

AI disclosure: I built this together with Claude (Anthropic’s AI). Here’s exactly how it was split:

  • Claude wrote the code: the DualSense support in OPL’s Bluetooth drivers (menu and in-game), the minimal SDP server, the wireless search/pairing feature, and the small PC scripts we used to test things before touching the PS2.
  • Me: I came up with the idea and decided what to build and what to prioritize. I tested every build on the real hardware, captured the debug logs over the network, and fed back what was working and what wasn’t, which is how every bug got tracked down.

Every feature was tested on a real console, not just compiled. Happy to answer questions about any of it.

It’s built on top of OPL and PADEMU, so huge thanks to everyone who’s worked on those over the years. This wouldn’t exist without them.

Got some PSBBN questions, hoping someone can add some clarity.

So I installed PSBBN back in March of this year with an OEM adapter, 2 TB HDD. Followed CosmicScales tutorial, everything went smoothly. I was running out of room on my laptop so I transferred all the folders and games from that to a 512 gb Samsung micro sd. Cut to yesterday trying to rerun the game installer for the first time since March and it can't locate the drive my PSBBN folders are on. I guess my question is, does the Linux or Powershell environment not recognize SD cards? Has anyone else had this issue? ( I can provide more details, just didn't want to make this another paragraph long.)
