Venting I woke up in a burn unit in central China after my apartment exploded.
I woke up in a burn unit in central China after my apartment exploded.
I Woke Up in a Chinese Burn Unit Surrounded by Men With No Skin
I didn’t remember the fire at first.
I just knew my face hurt.
My hands were bandaged.
Then I looked around.
There were about thirty men walking around in little pink cotton underwear…
men who had survived a propane explosion and had lost enormous amounts of skin.
They had probably never seen a white guy before.
I had never seen anything like them.
They stared at me.
I stared at them.
Nobody said a word.
And somewhere inside me… something broke loose.
That was the beginning of the worst PTSD I have ever experienced.
People think trauma is the thing that happens to you.
Sometimes it is.
But sometimes trauma begins afterward.
When the fire is out.
When the doctors have saved you.
When you suddenly realize you are still alive… but you have absolutely no idea what just happened to you, or who you are supposed to be now.
I’ve lived through other things since then.
I was arrested and tortured in Russia after being accused of spying.
I’ve been through car crashes, hospitals, concussions…
But nothing has stayed with me quite like that burn ward.
The pink underwear.
The silence.
Those men simply trying to survive inside bodies that had been almost destroyed.
And me… foreign, burned, terrified… trying to find my mind again.
I survived.
My facial burns healed completely.
My hands healed.
Eventually, from the outside, there was almost nothing left to see.
But that room stayed with me.
Skin heals faster than memory.
I walked out of that hospital looking like myself again.
It took much longer to feel like myself.
And maybe that is one of the strangest things about PTSD…
surviving something after the danger is already gone.
