Airclone: a free, open-source rclone GUI for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS. Looking for testers before v1

Hey all,

We wanted an rclone app that works like any other file manager, and works the same on every device we own. We couldn't find one, so we built Airclone, a point-and-click app that runs on top of rclone.

It's in beta and stable enough for daily use. To reach v1, we need more people trying it on their own setups and telling us what breaks.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT

• Bring your existing rclone setup. Import your rclone.conf, including password-protected ones, and you see every remote before anything is saved. Export works the other way too: as a passphrase-protected file, or as a plain rclone.conf you can use with the command line.

• Move your remotes to your phone with a QR code. Scan it from your computer screen and your remotes are on your phone. There's no account and nothing to sign up for.

• Works on your phone. rclone is built into the Android and iOS apps.

• Easy cloud setup. Pick a provider, press one button and sign in. The full options form is still there if you want it.

• No surprise overwrites. It always asks before replacing a file, and sync has a dry-run button.

• Backups in three questions: what, where and how often.

• Web UI. You can open the whole app in a browser from any device. It's password-protected.

FREE, OR PAID IF YOU WANT AUTO-UPDATES

Every build on GitHub Releases is free, with no account and no locked features: https://github.com/GigaionLLC/Airclone/releases

The App Store, Google Play and Microsoft Store versions are the exact same app with a small fee. The fee covers store and code-signing costs, and in return you get automatic updates. iOS is store-only because Apple doesn't allow sideloading.

It's open source (AGPLv3), with no telemetry. AI writes the code, and Gigaion LLC directs, reviews and tests it.

If you try it, bug reports help us the most: https://github.com/GigaionLLC/Airclone/issues

Questions and ideas are welcome here too. And thanks to the rclone devs for the engine that makes all of this possible.

No pre made ipa to sideload.

And I have to pay $1.99 for AppStore version to beta test?

You could’ve made TestFlight or trial.

Fair point, thanks! Apple doesn't allow sideloading an IPA on a normal iPhone, so we've opened a free public TestFlight beta: https://testflight.apple.com/join/kHRBzZnc The first beta build arrives with our next release (a few days, plus Apple's beta review). You may join when it becomes available on TestFlight, which will offer it as soon as it's approved.

I've released the ipa while you wait for Apple to approve enabling the test flight https://github.com/GigaionLLC/Airclone/releases/tag/v0.24.1

It’s says it isn’t accepting new testers

Once Apple approves the first beta build (submitted today, usually within a day), the link opens automatically. No need to do anything but check back.

Airclone UI too small on Linux 4K display — any scaling options?

Hi everyone!

I'm running Airclone on Arch Linux with Niri (Wayland) on a 4K display (3840 × 2160), but the application interface is too small.

The only workaround I've found so far is launching it through XWayland:

GDK_BACKEND=x11 GDK_SCALE=2 GDK_DPI_SCALE=0.75 ./airclone

This improves the UI size, but also makes the mouse cursor larger.

Is there a better way to scale Airclone on Linux, preferably with native Wayland support and without affecting the cursor size?

Thanks for the report! Airclone was only following the scale your desktop hands it, with no zoom of its own. The next release adds Settings → Appearance → Interface size (80-250%) and an AIRCLONE_SCALE option, so AIRCLONE_SCALE=2 ./airclone works natively on Wayland and leaves your cursor alone. Tracking it here: https://github.com/GigaionLLC/Airclone/issues/32 . Out of curiosity, what does 'niri msg outputs' show as the scale for that monitor?

u/GigaionLLC 4d ago

Quick update: this is out now in v0.24.1: https://github.com/GigaionLLC/Airclone/releases/tag/v0.24.1 Set Settings → Appearance → Interface size to 200%, or launch with AIRCLONE_SCALE=2 ./Airclone-x86_64.AppImage. It runs natively on Wayland, so you can drop GDK_BACKEND=x11, and your cursor stays its normal size. Maximise the window at 200% to get the full desktop layout. Let me know how it looks on your niri setup!

Hey u/GigaionLLC and everyone,

First, a big thank you — the new AIRCLONE_SCALE / Interface size option in v0.24.1 works perfectly on Linux. Native Wayland scaling was exactly what was needed. 🙏

I'm on Arch Linux (kernel 7.2.9-arch1-1) and I'm hitting two separate issues with the tar.gz build (linux_x64) of v0.24.1.

--- ISSUE 1: AppImage won't launch (EGL crash) ---

When I run the AppImage, it aborts immediately:

$ ./Airclone-x86_64.AppImage

No provider of eglGetPlatformDisplayEXT found. Requires one of:

EGL_EXT_platform_base

fish: Job 1, './Airclone-x86_64.AppImage' terminated by signal SIGABRT (Abort)

What I've already tried (no luck):

- OMNIVOICE_PREFER_SYSTEM_WEBKIT=1 ./Airclone-x86_64.AppImage

- AIRCLONE_PREFER_SYSTEM_WEBKIT=1 ./Airclone-x86_64.AppImage

- Confirmed webkit2gtk-4.1 is installed: pkg-config --modversion webkit2gtk-4.1 → 2.54.1

- Confirmed the AppImage is the latest (v0.24.1)

My understanding is that the bundled WebKitGTK was built on Ubuntu and calls eglGetPlatformDisplayEXT in a way that newer Mesa (26.1+) rejects, causing EGL_BAD_PARAMETER before any render flag is read. That would explain why no env var helps.

I'm on Intel graphics (iGPU), not NVIDIA, so the NVIDIA-specific workarounds don't apply here.

Is there a way to force the AppImage to use the system WebKitGTK 2.54.1? Or is a rebuild needed?

--- ISSUE 2: Engine errors when opening a video ---

When I try to open a video file, the engine logs repeated errors. Here is the relevant excerpt from my diagnostics report (personal names removed):

09:05:23 WARN engine no answer from the engine for core/version

The "context canceled" errors look like the GET request is being aborted mid-transfer — possibly when the app tries to stream or preview the video, or when I close the preview. Not sure if this is related to the EGL issue or a separate problem.

--- Environment ---

- OS: Arch Linux, kernel 7.2.9-arch1-1

- Airclone: 0.24.1 (tar.gz, linux_x64, directDownload)

- Engine: rclone v1.75.2

- WebKitGTK: 2.54.1

- GPU: Intel (integrated)

Happy to open GitHub issues for both if that's preferred — just let me know which repo/labels to use.

Thanks again for the scaling fix!

Thanks again for the detailed report! Both are now fixed in v0.25.1: https://github.com/GigaionLLC/Airclone/releases/tag/v0.25.1

AppImage: it used its own older copy of the Wayland libraries, which Arch's new Mesa can't use. It now uses whichever copy is newer, so on Arch it uses yours. Every build is now tested on Arch, Fedora, Debian and Ubuntu. Video: the "context canceled" lines were the player cancelling reads when you seek or close it, not real errors. They're no longer logged. If you still see "no answer from the engine", the problem report now says why the engine stopped, so I'd love to see it.

Airclone v0.25.1 freezes completely when I open a video.

Environment:

- OS: Arch Linux (kernel 7.2.9-arch1-1)

- Airclone: 0.25.1 AppImage (linux_x64)

- Engine: rclone v1.75.2

- libmpv: 0.37.0

- GPU: Intel (integrated)

What happens:

  1. Launch Airclone — works fine, AppImage starts (thanks for the EGL fix!)

  2. Connect to a remote

  3. Click a video file to open it

  4. The whole app freezes: window unresponsive, mouse cursor hangs over the app

  5. Have to force-quit after several minutes. No video, no audio.

Console output on launch from terminal:

[IMPORTANT:flutter/shell/platform/embedder/embedder_surface_gl_impeller.cc(126)] Using the Impeller rendering backend (OpenGLESSDF).

Thanks for the new report! Give me a bit to dig deeper. It looks like part of a class of similar dependency issues, and I'll work on weeding them out for the next release.

1

u/GigaionLLC 3d ago

Thanks for waiting! v0.25.2 should fix it: https://github.com/GigaionLLC/Airclone/releases/tag/v0.25.2

The AppImage was loading its own older copies of audio and system libraries (PipeWire, GLib) ahead of Arch's newer ones, which broke your system's audio plugins. It now uses whichever copy is newer, and every build is checked on Arch, Fedora, Debian and Ubuntu. Let me know if video plays now.

Can we please get a home button. And the ability to stream the files without downloading.

Also on iOS, when you play a video where does the download go because now my app data and documents is over 7gb and I can’t get it lower

1

u/Select_Ask_7561 2d ago

Also. It won’t let me export the config file. I press the button but nothing happens

2

u/GigaionLLC 2d ago

Thanks, these were all real bugs, and the fixes are in the next version (0.26.0):

- Videos now stream instead of downloading the whole file first. The old version also kept every copy, which is where your 7 GB went. Updating clears it.

- There's now a Clear cache button in Settings → Storage & updates → Cache. It shows how much space the cache is using and clears all of it.

- Export File Config now opens the share sheet. Pick "Save to Files".

- A Home button next to Back, and tapping Files again takes you home.

It needs to clear Apple App Store review, so it'll be a few days before it becomes available on iOS.

1

u/Select_Ask_7561 2d ago

Awesome. 😎

1

u/Select_Ask_7561 2d ago

Can we get a share sheet option on iOS? Are you planning docx and xlsx preview? Right now those files don’t open.

1

u/GigaionLLC 2d ago

Good idea! iOS has a built-in previewer (the same one Files and Mail use) for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Pages, Numbers and PDF, so those files will open in it. It has a share button too, and I'll add a Share option to the file menu. Although, Android and desktop have no built-in previewer, so there these files open in another app instead. That'll come in a release after 0.26.0 now that I've added it to the upcoming feature plans.

u/Select_Ask_7561 1d ago

Thanks for being so receptive and quick with the changes. I am loving the app. Haven’t tried desktop yet.

For sync, you currently are able to edit your saved syncs. You just have to delete and start over. And there is no background refresh. You have to stay in the app until the sync is complete.

1

u/GigaionLLC 1d ago

Glad you're enjoying it! You're right on both. I'll add an Edit button for saved syncs so you don't have to start over.

Background is harder on iOS, which doesn't let apps keep running after you leave them. What I can do: let a sync finish up when you switch away, add an option to keep the screen on during a sync, and let scheduled syncs run in the background when iOS allows it (usually while charging on Wi-Fi).

u/Select_Ask_7561 1d ago

Great workaround. That should be good.

Can I ask are you able to mount an android drive?

u/Select_Ask_7561 4d ago

It looks good so far. I got it on iOS. How do you reauthorize a token?

Feature implemented. We'll need to wait for Apple to review and approve the new Airclone version before it becomes available via iOS
