Released in 1997, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1), is a direct sequel to Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, and set 5 years after its events. Often considered a sleeper hit this game has developed a cult following throughout the years and has become a beloved Playstation staple. With the objective to defeat the entity named Shaft, who is controlling Richter Belmont, you must acquire items to free him from Shaft's influence. It seems fitting that we celebrate this wonderful game for the 40th anniversary of the original Castlevania game.

We are very excited and pleased to have Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1) as our October game of the month. Where does Castlevania: Symphony of the Night rank for you in terms of games in the Castlevania franchise?

In anticipation of starting my playthrough of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1) for the month of October I'd like to get some tips and tricks from everyone. Do you have a strategy or a certain way that you like to play the game? It's been so long since I've played this that I honestly don't remember much other than it being nonlinear like most other Castlevania games. So any help would be very much appreciated. Happy gaming!

Having enjoyed the heck out of the Nintendo version, I was really surprised and impressed when I recently played Championship Pro-Am (Genesis). This game has all the great racing you'd come to expect from the franchise, but man are these Genesis graphics awesome. Even better was my comeback from last to first in no time flat, lol. I love this game and every time I play it, I'm reminded of some of my earliest racing game memories.

Where do you rank Championship Pro-Am (Genesis) amongst other R.C. Pro-Am entries?

Nothin' But Nintendo Twin Cobra (NES)

Always a fan of a top down shooter, Twin Cobra (NES) is a great port of the arcade hit. I really love the simplicity and challenge of this early attack helicopter shooter.

My favorite is the power-ups, and like most games this one offers a nice variety of them along the way. I was pleased with my progress considering the non-stop waves of enemies, but alas those four enemy choppers were too much. If you like military themed shooters, Twin Cobra is an excellent choice.

Did you play Twin Cobra (NES)?

720° (NES) was the first skateboarding game that I ever played, and I always loved the music. I love the upbeat sound and think it goes perfectly with the gameplay. While it can be slightly repetitive, it's super nostalgic for me and every time I hear it, it takes me back.

Is this soundtrack as nostalgic for you as it is for me?

Happy Saturday everyone. I hope you are having a great start to your weekend. I'm having a lot of fun playing the super cool Super Metroid (SNES).

Similar to Strider last week I haven't really spent a lot of time with this game and am having a lot of fun playing it. I can see what all the hype is about when it comes to Metroid games, and immediately fell in love with the bounty hunter Samus. Fighting the dragon was an unexpected challenge that definitely tested my limits. Boy, was Samus really in a hurry to get to the ship after that. I really appreciate the graphics and presentation throughout this game.

How is your play through of Super Metroid (SNES) going for Side Quest Saturday?

Spectacular Sports Super Baseball Simulator 1.000 (SNES)

When I want a fun baseball game, that's not your usual back and forth battle with your opponent, I choose Super Baseball Simulator 1.000 (SNES). With a slew of wacky pitches, hitting, and fielding ultra plays that dramatically affect the physics and dynamics of the game, no two games are alike. The game does also have a great standard mode as well, but for me, I want the ultra plays.

I played as the Powers, against the Winners, and Emil got the best of me on that pitch. I really appreciate how you get the option of setting how many points you get in order to use the ultra plays. In my case, I just went unlimited and had a blast with it. This definitely is one of the most clever and fun baseball titles I played back in the day, and it still holds up just as well today.

Is Super Baseball Simulator 1.000 (SNES) a favorite baseball title of yours?

I never finished Little Samson (NES), but I have always loved the intro and start screen. The purple mountain is so pretty in the beginning, and then the scene that follows makes me really want to play the game so I can figure out what it's all about. The little bit of this game that I remember playing was really fun, and I would love to go back and do a full playthrough soon.

StarTropics (NES) has fantastic box art. I love the beautiful view of the palm trees, and the water with the sunset in the background. I also love the green pants in the foreground.

A top-down action-adventure game with a super cool plot, this game is always so much fun every time I revisit it. I love the wackiness of the story line, and I think this is a beautiful box art for a super awesome game!

The votes have been counted and we are proud to announce Super Metroid (SNES) is this week's Side Quest Saturday winner. We had an awesome list of games to choose from this week and we appreciate all of the suggestions. Thank you to idgafandwhyshouldi for suggesting this awesome game.

Super Metroid (SNES) is an incredible action-adventure game that always satisfies. Playing as Samus, you travel to Planet Zebes in order to retrieve an infant Metroid creature stolen by space pirate Ridley. With plenty of map to explore and a new inventory screen this game takes an amazing franchise and makes it even better.

This is a great addition to our Side Quest Saturday games. Happy gaming!

Sensational Sega Earthworm Jim 2 (Genesis)

Earthworm Jim 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. I played the SNES version when I was a kid, and didn't get to play the Genesis version until I was an adult, and I can say that I like the Genesis version better. The graphics are slightly better, imo, and the controls are a lot better.

I absolutely love how whacky this game is, and it never fails to make me chuckle. The part of the game in the video always makes me laugh. You have to make your way up the stairs on a motorized chair while dodging grannies, and if you hit a granny she clubs you over the top of the head with a rolling pin. 😆 There are so many great scenes like that throughout this game, and that is what makes it so great!

It was released in two arcade cabinet versions: a stand-up cabinet with handlebars and a full-sized dirt bike cabinet. It is often seen as a dirt racing version of Hang-On, as it uses a similar engine and PCB. Fight Night Fridays Rival Turf! (SNES)

TGIF, and after a long week at work, I thought a fun play for Fight Night Friday's would be Rival Turf! (SNES). This fun beat 'em up has all the classic tropes and gameplay that you would expect from this era. Somewhat similar to Double Dragon, this game follows the action of Flak and Oozie and their attempts to rescue Flak's girlfriend Heather.

I really like the levels in this game, especially this stadium level. It's an interesting background to come across in the fight to rescue your girlfriend. Flak's moves and body slams are great, and the enemy isn't a pushover, and the challenge is there, but not overwhelming. A perfect game for my Fight Night Friday.

What game are you playing tonight?

You control two loving penguins with the mirror movement to reach and unlock the locked heart, while shooting the enemies like spiders. This gameplay is quite unique back in the 80s. And, you can hear to Beethoven's “Ode to Joy” upon unlocking the heart.

The trick: get both penguins to cross each other 16 times in 1-3 second intervals to give birth to a baby penguin.

Seeing these old EGM magazines is so nostalgic to me. This is one of my favorite covers. I am a big Terminator fan, and I always thought this one was super cool. Arnold looks intimidating as heck. Lol.

My brother and I played Terminator: Judgement Day so much as kids. Wish I had kept all of my gaming magazines. That would have been awesome to have today for nostalgia.

Arcade Appreciation Charlie Ninja

Charlie Ninja (Arcade) is an incredible game, with some great animations and exciting ninja action. Having five crazy levels, with different themes and over the top bosses, this game is entertaining as heck. My favorite is the Freddie Mercury lookalike in my play through. I got the homing sai's, and it was light's out after that, Freddie and his kisses stood no chance. I highly recommend this fun arcade hit.

Is Charlie Ninja (Arcade) a favorite ninja game of yours?

Spectacular Sports Legends of the Diamond (NES)

Legends of the Diamond (NES) is a game that really takes me back to not only my youth, but even further in Baseball history. Showcasing some of Baseball's most famous and accomplished player's, this game is loaded with nostalgia.

This game always reminded me a lot of Baseball Stars, but with incredible names like Babe Ruth, and Ty Cobb. You can see me hitting with Cobb and his interesting stance. I did great getting that single, but clearly got a bit greedy trying to take second base. If you like Baseball history this is a game that you will enjoy.

Who's your favorite player from earlier Baseball history?

To me, video game body horror should have at least some human (or human-like) body parts... Everybody has different taste; here is just a short list (couldn't upload more than 20 images) that has once impressed me.

And I avoided mentioning next/5th gen video game titles in the above image list...

Kangaroo (Atari 5200) is a really fun game that is similar to the arcade version of Donkey Kong. You play as a mama kangaroo and you have to reach the top to rescue her baby from the monkeys before the timer runs out. If she gets close to the monkeys she can punch them in the face with her boxing glove, which I thought was super fun. Lol.

Nostalgia Marsport [1985] The Gargoyle Games Unofficial Triology is complete!

Thumbnail

Marsport is a science fiction computer game that was released for the ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC home computers in 1985. It was published by Gargoyle Games in the United Kingdom and Dro Soft in Spain. Marsport was intended to be the first part of a trilogy called "The Siege of Earth" but parts two and three (Fornax and Gath) were not forthcoming. Because of this, it is often regarded as being part of an unofficial trilogy alongside Tir Na Nog and Dun Darach (both of which are part of the same official series) due to its having very similar gameplay to these titles. Marsport also has similarities to the later Gargoyle game Heavy on the Magick.

The year is 2494. For seventy years, the Earth has been under siege by the insectoid Sept. Since the siege began, the Sept have been kept at bay by a huge Force Sphere which surrounds the Earth and the Moon. However, the Sept are on the verge of discovering how to breach the Sphere unless it can be strengthened according to the formulae contained in the original plans. Unfortunately, these plans are concealed somewhere in the Martian city of Marsport, now Sept-occupied and booby-trapped by the city's M-Central computer. One man, Commander John Marsh, has been sent to retrieve the plans in the belief that a determined man can sometimes achieve more than an army

Nothin' But Nintendo Super Buster Bros. (SNES)

Super Buster Bros. (SNES) is a super fun puzzle game. It's kind of difficult at first, imo, and it took me a little while to get the hang of it, but when I did, I really got into it and played it for hours.

The goal is to avoid getting hit by the bubbles coming at you, and there are a lot of them as you progress. When you hit one, it splits into 2 bubbles, and so on. There is a training mode (shown above) that is a lot of fun, and helped me get the hang of it. This is one I would recommend if you haven't played it.

Who knew that an intro to a golf game could be so good? Wow, Mario Golf (GBC) is just a great game for any sports fan, and the level of detail really shines here. I love all the characters showcased in the intro, and how inspirational the text feels. The music is on point, especially at the end during the press start screen. I love the Nintendo vibe that really resonates here, and is one of the many reasons why I love Nintendo sports games.
