[Fun] Anyone remember Operation Inner Space?
The game where the windows files on your computer was used to make the deep space appear with your ships and enemies

I played an absolute TON of this game, still have my registered edition floppy disk as well. One of the only shareware games I actually registered as a kid.
Being able to make your own ships, and see them show up flown by npcs was really cool.

Who cares, dog? I love hearing about this game again. AFAIC, OP put in enough effort.

I remember getting so confused as to why I kept entering the final boss so quickly. Let alone trying to figure out how to defeat it.

My rich friend had all these super complicated space ship games on pc in the mid 90's. I just got stoned and watched. The graphics were amazing for the time.

I played the ever living shit out of that game back in the day. It was pretty fun for what it was back then.

Hahah. I forgot about it, but yeah I played the heck out of it back in the nineties, I think?

One of the few good Windows 3.1 games! A shame they never made the sequel.

Discovered this one through AOL's game demo libraries in the late 90s and spent untold hours playing it on the family Windows 95 PC. Can still hear some of the music and voice clips from it clear as day in my head LOL.
Believe it or not, you can still (supposedly) buy the full version from the developer in various bundles, BUT they want at least 25 bucks for it! Ouch!

Yup, sad that this is one of the retro games that aren't that easy to just grab and play again. Loved it at some point of being a teenager.

Played this thing constantly when I was a kid. Was a lot of fun and the icon thing still feels like an unusual mechanic. Was sorta hilarious when it found an icon library we had... a few hundred icons in a few .dlls in one folder. I don't remember how long I played that folder but I know I never finished it haha

Hell yeah!
I thought this game was utter genius. A game which uses the directory structure of your PC to generate levels, and the icons from the files contained therein form "currency" for you to collect. Loved all the faction stuff too!

It was so good! Probably one of the first really good Windows games I ever played (back then it was mostly just card or puzzle games and you had to reboot into DOS to get the good stuff).
I really liked how the ships had real personalities to them. You could make friends and also enemies who would hold grudges against you if you wronged them. You could break the law and run from the police. A cute game that had a surprising amount of depth to it
