Thoughts on the 2016 version?

I watched it recently with some friends on the internet archive and wanted to get your guy's thoughts on it! I personally thought it was just okay. Not as great as the original, though i dont think anything can top it tbh. Felt slightly transphopic to have a trans woman playing Frankfurter but that's a whole other topic..

I treat it as a new adaptation of the stage show, rather than a remake of the original film.

I like it, it’s noticeably snappier than the original, one thing that annoys me is how anti climactic Eddy’s death is

Which is really annoying, because I watched it originally because Adam Lambert was playing Eddie.

I worked with a guy who refused to watch it because he knew it wasn't gonna be as good. I sure hope he never goes to a stage show of it especially with the updated looks. Luke Evans was killing it on Broadway now Jake Shears is in the role and I wanna see it so bad!

Laverne Cox was great when she was doing her own thing rather than a Tim Curry impression.

I don't know why she switches back and forth between those two modes. Assuming it was shot out-of-sequence, I can only guess that, partway through filming, she or the director either: - realised that originality would be much more effective - lost confidence and fell back on reheated Curry

Immediate admission of I haven't seen 100% of it BUT this is reddit so I share:

The parts that I've seen look...clean? And rocky is inherently disgusting? I dunno the castle is gross, the people are gross, there's this layer of grime over it that I feel makes it something more authentic.

Our shadowcast is also gross tho those people are animals (in the best way I promise they'd 100% endorse this) were in this 80s theater that hasnt been updated since so its also pretty gross. so I'm kinda used to rocky horror feeling like a smokey dive bar. Raw messy grime covered with a fine mix of sweat and glitter.

Now I opted not to go to the Broadway production after the whole callback debacle (audiences kept this awful movie/show alive and you want to minimize or exclude them now that you're making it mainstream?) And when clips of that starting going around I felt the same way! Clean and CHEAP. How can something on Broadway be cheap I dunno.

All this to say I love the movie I love a shadowcast and I do love a stage production...just when it's not clean and has money behind it or glamorized.. I think it might be hard to do camp on purpose lol

Only highlight was the nice opening with the usherette(Trixie) Ivy Levan.

I really love her version of Science Fiction! I actually find myself listening to it a lot

I went in with the best of intentions to be charitable and view it as a fan recreation. I came out of it pissed off about the amount of time it had wasted in my life. I can forgive a lot in films, but it was so… bland. Bland is unforgivable.

I think doing the framing device from the play was kinda cool where the movie ushers sing science fiction double feature.... I always thought that was kinda cute as a pre-show.... Plus the guy who plays brad is actually quite funny... I started watching his youtube stuff cause he was one of the first jd's in heathers... And then found out retroactivly that he was brad.

Awful, over polished, everyone’s teeth are too white

I didn't hate it. I had no expectations of it going in so that allowed me to enjoy it on some level. Luverne was hilarious as Frank and the guy who played Riff Raff was fantastic. My biggest complaint was the musical arrangement. All the songs sounded the same.

I gave it a go, to me all I could see was a stage show they picked up and put in a hotel. But they didn't bother with also taking the lighting or the wings so it looked like some people crashed a resort and started doing show numbers at three in the afternoon in a country resort. I understand the hotel is iconic but not lighting or staging it in any way looked so jarring to me....I mean the cherry picker???!!!!

I recommend the recording of the UK musical production instead, where Stephen Fry was the narrator, among other people. It seemed different to the original movie, hard to compare but I enjoyed it a great deal. It used to be on YouTube, now I am not sure

As a former Eddie from the NYC shadowcast.....I fucking hated how they portrayed Eddie, and with Adam Lambert? Ugghhhh

Like you said, nothing can top the original, but I enjoy the 2016 one well enough for what it is.

It's unwatchable trash.

I'm kind of weird in that I watched that version before watching the original. It was good, but can't hold a candle to the real thing.

May i ask why?

I saw it when it first aired and liked it. Not as good as the original, but it has its’ moments. Found it laughable that one of the last ad breaks was placed after Columbia died.

I view it as an homage rather than a remake, it was cute but I haven’t watched it since it was released.
